Tiffany Pollack & Eric Johanson :: BLUES IN MY BLOOD
There is a long tradition of vocal duos in country and folk music, with groups like Sugarland and Shovels and Rope continuing to see success and popularity with the formula. Tiffany Pollack, an acclaimed New Orleans jazz singer, and Eric Johanson (performing courtesy of Whiskey Bayou Records), former lead guitarist for Cyril Neville, have teamed up to bring that winning tactic to the blues and roots world on their new album Blues In My Blood. Eleven tracks of original and select standards showcase the depth of each one’s talent with a new collaboration that is fresh and natural. The Louisiana natives, who each have been building a strong career, met when Pollack was reunited with her biological family at 25, and discovered they are cousins and third-generation members of a musical family with a rich history. After years of the cousins’ mothers pushing for them to work together, the duo project has come to fruition for a very personal family project in celebration of the blues.

Who Would Have Thought???
(HUGHESVILLE, PA )  …what began as a discussion among friends in a local Williamsport, Pennsylvania bar in May of 1990, would 30 years later be the reason for a three-day celebration of the art form. The Billtown Blues Festival has never lost its stride year after year and has become an annual landmark event in Central Pennsylvania.  Thirty consecutive years of producing great blues festivals is reason to celebrate, and so it will, be June 14,15 and 16 at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds in Hughesville. Pennsylvania.

With a starting kitty of just $300, the event has experience measured and gradual growth, now luring blues fans from all over the United States and beyond with its impressive lineup year after year and its 100% focus on the blues art form.

One can visit the billtownblues.org website and marvel at the talent that has presented great blues music on this rural Pennsylvania stage. Luther Allison, Levon Helm, Johnny Clyde Copeland, Sista Monica, Saffire the Uppity Blues Women, Slick Ballinger, Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, represent just a tiny sampling of the talent that have thrilled Billtown Festival attendees over the years.  ...Find links and more about the Billtown Blues Festival

Big Congratulations to the 2019 Blues Music Award Winners
(MEMPHIS, TN) – “The Memphis Cook Convention Center was packed with blues musicians, fans, and music-world luminaries on May 9th anxious to see who would be announced as winners at the 40th Annual Blues Music Awards. For the second consecutive year, Little Steven Van Zandt emceed the festivities, with such notable musicians as Maria Muldaur, Latimore, Colin Linden, Scott Barnhart, Colin James, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Victor Wainwright serving as presenters. Besides awarding honors in 25 categories, the BMAs, as is its tradition, featured performances from many nominees, with the gala ending in a jubilant all-star jam.

The night’s joyful celebration, however, also held a note of sadness. This year’s top award winner was Michael Ledbetter, who passed away in January. Ledbetter was honored with the Instrumentalist-Vocals award and named B.B. King Entertainer of the Year while his group, The Welch-Ledbetter Connection, were victors as the Band of the Year. Additionally, his co-bandleader, Monster Mike Welch, topped the Instrumentalist-Guitar category. At the ceremony, Welch noted of his late musical partner: ‘I am the guitarist I am in 2019 because I had to keep up with Mike Ledbetter.’” … – Blues Foundation

“Crazy Blues” Launched New Era for Blues Artists & Buyers
The first commercial recording of vocal blues by an African-American singer was Mamie Smith's performance of Perry Bradford's "Crazy Blues" in 1920 on OKeh Records. Smith was backed by clarinetist Johnny Dunn, trombone player Dope Andrews, clarinetist Ernest Elliott, Leroy Parker on violin and pianist Perry Bradford who were collectively known as The Jazz Hounds.
Written in 1918 and originally titled “Harlem Blues,” this was a song Mamie Smith learned from Bradford for a New York stage show called “The Maid of Harlem.”

Re-titled “Crazy Blues,” it was the record that launched a new era for blues in the music business and is said to have sold 75,000 in the first few months of its release. Record companies realized a huge untapped market of talent and potential buyers in the working-class black community.

The song brought wealth and fame to both Smith and Bradford during the 1920s and paved the way for Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and many more to follow.
