BATTLE OF THE BLUES: CHICAGO vs OAKLAND
When thinking of historic hometowns of the blues, cities like St. Louis, Memphis and Chicago quickly come to mind, but Oakland California, historically a focal point of the West Coast blues and jazz scenes, is often overlooked. The city has a significant art scene and claims the highest concentration of artists per capita in the United States. Drummer, songwriter, producer and certified blues man, Twist Turner, spent several years living and working in the Oakland area where he began this album project in 2013 to “produce a recording of the unknown and under-appreciated blues men and women of the Bay Area.”

When Twist returned to Chicago, after his 6-year stint in California, he found several artists in need of the same boost. Thus, he created the album Battle Of The Blues: Chicago vs Oakland, a collection of 11 original tracks and two covers that features over 30 of the best musicians each city has to offer including Mz. SuMac, Aldwin London, Freddie Roulette, Country Pete McGill and Nat Bolden from the San Francisco Bay area and the late Emery Williams Jr., former Magic Sam bass man, James Newman, from Chicago and “Mr. Excitement” himself Del Brown. ...Find more about this artist and release

Inaugural Lone Star Blues & Heritage Fest Provided True Taste of The Blues
(GRAPELAND, TX) - The inaugural Lone Star Blues and Heritage Festival Oct 25-27, brought attendees from The Netherlands, Canada and nine states to rural East Texas for a three-day celebration of the history, legacy and future of Texas blues. Held at beautiful Salmon Lake Park in Grapeland, Texas, many spent the entire weekend onsite, staying at the nostalgic cabins or in RVs throughout the park.

A diverse lineup of Texas talent contained performers ranging from veteran artists to rising young stars, providing a true taste of the roots and evolution of indigenous American music - the blues.

Veterans Milton Hopkins, Trudy Lynn and Benny Turner displayed their professional prowess in show-stopping performances throughout the weekend. Young artists such as Kelsie Kee and Reese Malone (Salvation From Sundown band), The Peterson Brothers and Mathias Lattin presented the promise of a powerful new generation to carry forth the tradition.

Sunday's gospel brunch, led by the award-winning Keeshea Pratt Band was a religious experience in every sense. Held on October 27, the 80th birthday of East Texas native and festival honoree Mr. Benny Turner. It was an emotionally stirring performance concluding with a second line befitting of the occasion. ...Read more about these inaugural event
Thankful for Good Times on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise
I had the pleasure of sailing on the 2019 October Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise (LRBC) to the Mexican Riviera. I also had the honor of being one of the Jamarama Hosts in the Crow’s Nest where I met many fine players that were either sailing or were artists booked on the ship. One even more poignant memory for me now was having the late Wee Willie Walker show up and perform at my jam. What a sweetheart and amazing, soulful person he was. I will treasure that.

If you have sailed on the LRBC then you know how special it is in general. If you haven’t, then put it on your blues bucket list. You won’t regret it. For me, along with prepping and packing for sightseeing, onboard fun, and the multiple theme nights (a favorite of mine), the cruise excitement accelerates when we get to the dock to check in and maybe get a chance to greet some of the artists plus the many blues friends as they arrive.

The 7-day cruise is jam-packed with so many worthwhile moments that it’s best to have a plan as it is hard to get it all in. But not-to-worry as there’s something for everyone between the concerts and showcases day and night, big and small, workshops, speakers, various jams, cooking demos, shopping, island hopping, eating-meeting-greeting (and eating!). It’s an endless, personal parade of all the blues-related things you love.

Thankful is an understatement for this amazing adventure with the LRBC family… ...Find more about the cruise
