Photo Moments with the 17th Annual BFG Magazine!!
The Albert Castiglia Band tore it up Jan 31, 2020 at Tio Leo's in San Diego, CA. Albert on lead guitar and vocals, Ephraim Lowell on drums and Justine Tompkins on bass guitar were tight as a drum.

Performing since 1990, Castiglia even had a stint as Junior Wells lead guitarist in the late 90's. The Florida-based, award winning singer, songwriter and guitarist's first solo work was released in 2004. His latest album, released in 2019 is called Masterpiece.

Marie Martens and The Messarounds :: TRAVELLED
Travelled, the debut album from Marie Martens and The Messarounds, walks both sides of blues and rock highway with intensity, conviction and power. Across 13 tracks, Marten seamlessly weaves her own originals in with an array of covers, each song distinctly different from the next, yet all connected by a common thread. Originally a bass player in her native Sweden, Martens grew up in the rock world but fell in love with the blues and never looked back.

Despite years of co-writing in various band, it wasn't until she picked up guitar; specifically gravitating to slide, that she began to write her own songs and craft her own style. Now, after 15 years in the States, she finally has corralled the right crew of like-minded musical accomplices and put together a blues rock locomotive that keeps one foot in the Delta while simultaneously hurling sonic bricks through the window separating early Led Zeppelin and The Black Keys.

Martens coaxes the most from every beat and lyric, applying a well-tempered stranglehold to every riff and melody. Her guitar work is all about tone control; from slippery smooth slide work to all-out fuzz fest, and most points in between, you’d be hard pressed to find a wasted note.  ...More about artist and release

In 1920 Mamie Smith’s Crazy Blues paved the way for Black Music
By Roger Smith/Syncopated Times
Mathematical sticklers may demur, but I take pleasure in declaring the twenties have finally arrived again. The ringing in of a new decade—a twenties that may or may not roar, but will undoubtedly swing—will bring many opportunities to celebrate centennials and deepen our appreciation for the history of syncopated music.

One of the most significant events of 1920 from the standpoint of popular music in the United States was the recording of Perry Bradford’s tune “Crazy Blues” by Mamie Smith and her Jazz Hounds. Its runaway success on the Okeh label made “Crazy Blues” the first significant hit recording in the blues genre. Smith was also the first African American female popular singer to lead a commercial recording.

The disc flew off store shelves in Harlem and racked up 75,000 copies sold in its first month. Some people say it went on to sell a million. I can’t judge the credibility of that claim, but for reference, the U.S. population stood at just a hair over 106 million on the first day of 1920, according to that year’s census.

Historians have often credited “Crazy Blues” with catalyzing the proliferation of so-called “race” records. Its popularity made clear that black consumers now made up a viable market for the recording industry. ...Read informative article
