March 2020
Lynn Lyons Returns to the North Country, June 25, 2020
Interrupting Anxiety, Stress, and Depression

Part 1: 8:15 - 10:15 AM for parents/caregivers and school personnel
Common Traps Parents and Teachers Need to Know…
and How to Change Them

Lynn Lyons
When children and teens are in the grips of worry, anxiety, and stress, adults often feel stuck as well. Parents, educators – even therapists – routinely report how overwhelmed they feel by the frequency and intensity of anxiety in the children they care for. The good news? Research proves teaching children certain cognitive and social skills makes a big difference in preventing the development of these mental health struggles. Lynn Lyons describes the most common anxiety-inducing patterns, including: reassurance, accommodation, avoidance, and poor problem solving. She then introduces concrete skills that change both the child’s and adults’ ingrained patterns of thinking and behaving. The goal? Helping kids and teens move toward autonomy and flexibility throughout their life.

Part 2: 10:30 - 3:30 for school counselors, teachers, and other school staff only
The Keys to Effective 504 & Behavioral Plans for Anxious Students:
Action over Avoidance

Lynn will discuss how to implement and sustain concrete measures to alleviate anxiety among students. Lynn will get specific, detailing interventions that help, as well as those that “do the disorder.” Educators will learn how anxiety’s quest for certainty and comfort impacts kids’ overall well-being and ability to move forward, and the concrete ways parents and schools can shift out of avoidance and panic, and into action and skill-building.

Conscious Discipline Conference
August 6 & 7, 2020

cd link
Conscious Discipline is a transformational social-emotional learning and classroom management approach.

Developed by a teacher for teachers, the philosophy of Conscious Discipline emerged after years of working with children and experiencing the challenges of a broken system full of hurting children and frustrated adults. The methodology and best-practices of Conscious Discipline offer a different – and proven – pathway to transformation.

A two-day Conscious Discipline training will be offered in the North Country. The focus will be on prek-6 classrooms, but middle and high school educators are invited to attend. Although the exampl e activities will be more elementary focused, the strategies and practices are applicable for all grades.

Trainer: Amy Speidel, Conscious Discipline Certified Instructor
Dates: August 6 & 7, 2020
Time: 8:00 to 3:00
Location: Town and Country Resort, Gorham, NH
For: pK-6 educators and administrators. Open to middle/high as well.

Cost (includes morning refreshments and lunch both days):
  • $50 per person for staff from full member school districts*
  • $60 per person for staff from associate member school districts*
  • $150 for non-member participants (only if seats are available after May 1st)
Purchase order number must be submitted with registration or a check can be mailed within 2 weeks of the registration deadline to hold your seat. Purchase orders can be for SY '21. No refunds for cancellations received after May 1st. Substitutions will be allowed.

As this is a highly-discounted fee, NCES expects this training to fill quickly. If the maximum capacity of 150 participants is exceeded prior to May 1st, NCES reserves the right to limit participation to a percentage of seats per school district--with the selection being made by a district administrator. A refund would be given in the event that your seat is bumped. After May 1st, any remaining seats will be first come, first serve and open to non-members as well.

Child Parent Psychotherapy - North Country Cohort
CPP logo
CPP is an intervention model for children aged 0-5 who have experienced traumatic events (including exposure to the opioid crisis) and/or are experiencing mental health, attachment, and/or behavioral problems. A central goal is to support and strengthen the caregiver-child relationship as a vehicle for restoring and protecting the child’s mental health. Treatment also focuses on contextual factors that may affect the caregiver-child relationship. For children exposed to trauma, caregiver and child are guided over the course of treatment to create a joint narrative of the traumatic event and to identify and address trauma triggers that lead to dysregulated affect and behavior.

For: Master’s or doctoral-level licensed mental health clinicians and psychotherapists with a degree in a mental health discipline. Those working towards licensing may be able to participate if there is licensed team member that participates with them.
