D’Angel targets US$200,000 from charity concert May 1

As the effect of the COVID-19 continues to settle in, many Jamaicans have joined the ranks of the unemployed, with little to nothing in their storage baskets. Basic needs are being denied as many simply cannot afford to put food on their tables.

It is with this in mind that many entertainers and social-media influencers have been using their various platforms to reach out to those most in need. Adding to the pool of persons undertaking philanthropic efforts is the Lady of Dancehall, D'Angel.

The Stronger singer will be hosting a COVID charity relief concert, which is set for Friday, May 1. She said it will see performances from Beenie Man, G Whizz, Singing Melody, and more. It will be an online streaming event hosted by comedian Trippple X, with live music from DJ RichRocc.

D'Angel said that when she reached out to the artistes to participate in the concert, they were all excited to get on board. She is hoping that the concert will raise US$200,000 (approximately J$27.1 million) to purchase supplies that will be presented to the needy in the form of care packages.

"I have my Spread A Little Love foundation and we're always giving back in different ways when there is a need. We did a fundraiser back in December and we donated supplies to the Mustard Seed Children's Home. With COVID-19, a lot of folks were reaching out for help and so I decided to embark on a new initiative to offer assistance to these people," she said, pointing out that her son is the source of inspiration for her efforts.

"My son, Marco Dean, is my inspiration for this foundation. He has a heart of gold and loves to help the less unfortunate. Angel's foundation is all about spreading love, joy and kindness, and we need so much more of that these days. People have lost jobs, some can't feed their families, and if I can help to make things easier for a few more people, I'm going to do that," she explained.  Source: http://jamaica-star.com/

Iaahden Sounds Just Released New Akae Beka Album “PROTOCOLS” available now on iTunes
St. Croix-based record label Iaahden Sounds just released their second full-length project with Akae Beka called "PROTOCOLS." This project is a 16-track album rich with the inimitable teachings of the transcended master lyricist, Vaughn Benjamin. Edmund from the Akae Beka Band plays guitar on many of the tracks on this album, and track #16 called "Guitar Track" has Vaughn on guitar - a rare treat.

Fans will recall the first Midnite/Iaahden Sounds collaboration entitled STAND THE TEST (2014).

In this new release, the producer, Jordan "Iaahden" Jones incorporates some hip-hop fusion into his reggae riddims. All Akae Beka/Midnite/Vaughn Benjamin fans who have been eagerly awaiting official releases from the Akae Beka camp are excited about this project as evidenced by their reaction on social media worldwide.

Covid-19 Impacts Staging Of Reggae Sumfest
Kingston, Jamaica – In light of the risk factors associated with the Covid-19 outbreak, Reggae Sumfest 2020 will not take place as scheduled.
Joe Bogdanovich, Chairman and CEO of DownSound Entertainment, promoters of the annual festival, shared, “In consultation with the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministries of Health, Tourism and Entertainment, we must sadly confirm the rescheduling of Reggae Sumfest 2020 to July 18th - 24th, 2021. While we hope and expect Covid-19 to be contained with the public’s continued cooperation, we take the safety and health of our guests, staff and community very seriously. We urge everyone to follow the guidelines and protocols put forth by the Ministry of Health and your local public health officials.”

Bogdanovich advised that patrons have 30 days (until May 27, 2020) to request a refund for existing online tickets. They can request this via our Eventbrite page where they were purchased. Otherwise tickets will be valid for redemption at Reggae Sumfest 2021.

In the meantime, Reggae Sumfest will continue its food distribution program to help the farmers and the needy in our society. There are other Reggae Sumfest 2020 initiatives to be released soon.

“Reggae Sumfest will continue to focus on its mission, to celebrate Jamaica’s music and culture through every channel available,” said Bogdanovich. Patrons can access updates on ongoing Reggae Sumfest activities by visiting the official website www.reggaesumfest.com, handle for Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @reggaesumfest.

Andru Branch & Halfway Tree

“Branch’s plaintive writing and forthright delivery is possessed of such honesty that it peers into your soul and demands that you listen with your ears and your heart…an essential collection.” – Dr. Jason Wilson, reggae historian and author of King Alpha’s Song In A Strange Land

"Canadian reggae pioneer Andru Branch has collected a quarter century of his finest recordings into a stunning new album called "The Singles." Among the millions who have responded to the call of Jamaica's influential music, few have made of their obsession art as fine as this. With frequent trips to the island itself, collaborating with some of the key musicians in Kingston's studios, Branch has amassed a body of work that stands with the best of them. Positive and constructive, harmonic and infectious, it's the perfect soundtrack for these troubled times."
- Roger Steffens, Author and Reggae Historian
