FESTIVAL TIME 2020:  A MESSAGE FROM WARREN SMITH AND THE EPIPHANY ARTISTS FAMILY

Dear SNWMF Friends and Family:

Warm Greetings to everybody.  We are acutely aware that in a “normal” year, for 25 years, right about now we would be busily and excitedly packing up things for Marysville, Angel’s Camp, and then Boonville.  And we know that for ourselves and thousands of others it is a big hole in our Summer and our lives, musical and otherwise, not to be heading there now. Mainly, we miss you!  And of course we miss the music. Especially in these challenging, troubled, not to say insane, times, the Festival always served for so many as an oasis of good vibes, great sounds and dancing, tasty food, and of course a big wonderful annual reunion for so many of us.
A “conscious party” and a magical weekend, as so many have called it.

Most of you know that the festival has been on hold due to Warren’s health, and now with the coronavirus.  We won’t go into details about the ongoing challenges he, Gretchen, and others have faced and continue to deal with.

We have tried over the past two years to find a way to present the Festival in some form but just could not make that work - and wouldn’t have been able to in any event in this year of the pandemic. It’s probably safe to say that every one of the festival staff, volunteers, vendors, and everybody involved dearly wish we were gathering this week in Boonville.  It is actually a hardship for some not to be able to work at making the event such an enjoyable success.  We regret this intensely. But Warren wants everyone to know this:

"It is very difficult not to present the festival, especially during these times.  I mourn the inability to gather as a community.  Arriving at SNWMF each year has always felt like coming home. Gretchen and I miss all of you.  We worry knowing that so many are suffering without work or social outlets.

While our world may seem chaotic and confusing, the rising global voice against injustice is exciting.  It’s more important than ever that we continue to spread the music and the message, and embrace our similarities and differences as humans on this earth. I take solace in knowing that each of us have nurtured and can continue to nurture a world family peacefully united in celebration of the universal spirit of music - the foundation upon which the festival is built - even while physical distancing.
SNWMF has stayed the course for a long time now.  Our community is strong. I know we all will keep working to make the world more equitable, loving and peaceful.  In the words of Bob and Peter: “Get up, stand up, Stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up, Don’t give up the fight.”

As always, forward ever, backwards never.  Love and respect, Warren.”

If there is any chance, we will see you again with live music playing when the time is right.  At this point we still cannot know what the Festival future will bring.  But we have always been grateful to everybody involved in helping to make the musical and other magic that has been the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival.  We wish you all good health, great music - and peace.

TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS RELEASE NEW SINGLE,
"GOT TO BE TOUGH," OUT NOW - FIRST STUDIO ALBUM IN A DECADE TO BE RELEASED VIA TROJAN JAMAICA/BMG ON AUGUST 28 – PRE-SAVE/ORDER
Legendary Jamaican artist Frederick “Toots” Hibbert releases the lead single "Got To Be Tough" off his upcoming album of the same title. The highly-anticipated 10-song collection will stand as Toots' first studio album of new material in more than a decade. "Got To Be Tough" is an energizing provocation that renews the near six-decade career of the man who launched a new sound and genre with his 1968 release, “Do The Reggay.” The single comes with the welcome announcement of a full-length Toots and The Maytals studio album, set for global release via Trojan Jamaica / BMG on August 28 https://toots.lnk.to/GotToBeTough

“Got To Be Tough” is a reminder that through Toots’ creative veins run all the roots and shoots of the Black Diaspora. Blues, soul, r’n’b, funk, jazz, reggae, African griots – Toots honors, embodies and owns them. Throwing down an authoritative guide: how to survive and thrive amongst our earthly challenges.

During this time of global social and political unrest, Toots’ important voice is needed now more than ever. Harking back to the start of Ska, during the civil rights movement era in America and Jamaican independence in the 1960s, he has sung iconic truths such as “Monkey Man” and “54-46 Was My Number,” a wry but not bitter response to his unjust incarceration for ganja.

He hipped our heads in the 1970s with the dynamic pan-Africanism of “Funky Kingston” and the early warning message of “Pressure Drop”; re-defining soul with the Toots In Memphis LP in the 80s.

Toots has constantly evolved while staying uniquely the same.

Since his wrongful 1966 imprisonment – which spawned one of his biggest global hits “54-46 Was My Number” -- Toots has gained insight into the corrupt systems that try to dominate our bravest endeavors, and it is in his new resistance music that his anger at, and sensitivity to injustice in 2020 is more clear than ever. Returning with a message, with no apology – a warning, as he repeats for emphasis on his latest single.

Listen to “Got To Be Tough” single HERE

The multiple GRAMMY® Award nominated and winning musician, vocalist, songwriter, producer and icon has made the wait worthwhile, crafting a stubborn groove, designed to inspire tenacity, while splendidly balancing joy and anger, pain and healing. Produced by Toots himself, who also plays many of the instruments on this album, alongside Zak Starkey on guitar, drums from one half of Sly and Robbie, Sly Dunbar, percussion from Cyril Neville, and a mighty horn section arranged by Toots himself.

Tough though the message is, your body has to respond to these songs, and your mind will follow. An impeccable performer himself, Toots knows that the dance itself is a primal exorcism; a greater guarantee than any that, helped by heeding this warning, we will live to "Do The Reggay" into the 21st century and beyond.
Got To Be Tough the album will be available worldwide from August 28.

Got To Be Tough track list:
1. Drop Off Head
2. Just Brutal
3. Got To Be Tough
4. Freedom Train
5. Warning Warning
6. Good Thing That You Call
7. Stand Accuse
8. Three Little Birds (ft. Ziggy Marley)
9. Having a Party

Record Label Spotlight: Issachar Musik
Issachar Muzik was established in 1992 as a Jamaican Reggae record label founded by Jah "Lloyd" Issachar Shaw from kingston 11 Jamaica now based in Los Angeles, CA.

Issachar Productions was founded by Lloyd “Jah Lloyd” Shaw in Kingston 11, Jamaica. As a member of the Rastafarian movement, the 12 Tribes of Israel, Jah Lloyd determined he wanted to release some music that reflected the orthodox values and livity of the movement.

Jah Lloyd married American singer Wendy Shaw, and encouraged her to write music that was oriented toward cultural roots reggae. With Wendy Shaw as its first artist, they started the label Issachar Muzik, whose name originates from one of the 12 Tribes that Jah Lloyd is a part of based on his birth month.

The first single was released in 1992 entitled ”Reggae Music is the Music of the King”.

The label released cassettes, vinyl and eventually CD’s, partnering with many of Jamaica’s greatest studio musicians including those from the Firehouse Crew, the original Roots Radics band, City Heat band (Supercat’s band) & Tony Greene from Lloyd Parkes and We the People band.

In Jah´s Name We Pray -
Black Lives Matter
Black Lives Matter began as a call to action in response to state-sanctioned violence and anti-Black racism. Our intention from the very beginning was to connect Black people from all over the world who have a shared desire for justice to act together in their communities. The impetus for that commitment was, and still is, the rampant and deliberate violence inflicted on us by the state.

The Black Lives Matter Global Network is as powerful as it is because of our membership, our partners, our supporters, our staff, and you. Our continued commitment to liberation for all Black people means we are continuing the work of our ancestors and fighting for our collective freedom because it is our duty.

Every day, we recommit to healing ourselves and each other, and to co-creating alongside comrades, allies, and family a culture where each person feels seen, heard, and supported.

We acknowledge, respect, and celebrate differences and commonalities.
We work vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and, by extension, all people.

We intentionally build and nurture a beloved community that is bonded together through a beautiful struggle that is restorative, not depleting.

We are unapologetically Black in our positioning. In affirming that Black Lives Matter, we need not qualify our position. To love and desire freedom and justice for ourselves is a prerequisite for wanting the same for others.

We see ourselves as part of the global Black family, and we are aware of the different ways we are impacted or privileged as Black people who exist in different parts of the world.

We are guided by the fact that all Black lives matter, regardless of actual or perceived sexual identity, gender identity, gender expression, economic status, ability, disability, religious beliefs or disbeliefs, immigration status, or location.

We make space for transgender brothers and sisters to participate and lead.
We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.

We build a space that affirms Black women and is free from sexism, misogyny, and environments in which men are centered.

We practice empathy. We engage comrades with the intent to learn about and connect with their contexts.

We make our spaces family-friendly and enable parents to fully participate with their children. We dismantle the patriarchal practice that requires mothers to work “double shifts” so that they can mother in private even as they participate in public justice work.

We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.

We foster a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).

We cultivate an intergenerational and communal network free from ageism. We believe that all people, regardless of age, show up with the capacity to lead and learn.
We embody and practice justice, liberation, and peace in our engagements with one another.
