Avey Grouws Band :: THE DEVIL MAY CARE
The influence of the Mississippi River on American jazz, blues and roots music is indisputable. Communities that have grown up along “Old Man River” gave birth to a unique sound. The Avey Grouws Band make their home in the Quad Cities, and the mix of midwestern muscle and southern charm is reflected in the passionate, powerful and playful music of the band’s debut full-length album, The Devil May Care. The ten original tracks were written by the dynamic duo of Jeni Grouws and Chris Avey. Grouws has an alto that can blow like a cool breeze or thunder like a Kansas tornado, and Avey is a skilled guitarist that has drawn quick comparisons to Coco Montoya and Robben Ford. The duo is backed by a skilled rhythm section of drummer Bryan West with Randy Leasman on bass. Keys and horns augment several tracks. The result is a very fresh sound with deep roots.

The set begins with Grouws teasing her man to “Come And Get This Love,” with the band employing the rumba to swing format delivering a great dance number. The title track is a clever twist on reckless behavior over an ice pick riff from Avey while Grouws sings about a forbidden affair that may be a sin but only “the devil may care.” West rolls out a rousing Bamboula street beat as Grouws calls on us to “turn anger into action,” on the fiery anthem “Rise Up.” ...Find more about this artist and release

Here's some thoughts about venues opening... share yours!
Hey Blues Fans!! We see some music venues are opening up around the country. I asked for your thoughts and here's some from readers:

"One of the things l do here is help book our member bands in local venues. We have only been allowed to have restaurants/bars open for outdoor dining and drinking since June 22nd. I have been out three times since then and the crowds have been thin but appreciative. At this point most places can't afford more than a trio and even at that are probably losing money. Hopefully we will have indoor dining soon!" - Tom Baldino, President of the Jersey Shore Jazz & Blues Foundation

"We saw Jon Shain (IBC winner 2019) at Grove Winery, Gibsonville, NC. Socially distant, reserved in advance tables, so limited audience, outdoors on a perfect June evening. Jon & FJ put on a great show. We'll be back to Gibsonville for the Red, White, and Blues concert later this month. Love their wine as well!" - Carol, Charlotte, NC

"My husband and I went to a concert in the Coleman Hawkins Park in St. Joseph MO 2 weekends ago. The All Stars played on the bandstand (and of course they had a great guest sax player), everyone in the park spread out, and all wore masks when they visited the restrooms and concession stand that was indoors.
The vibe was nice (people had a great time and danced) and I think everyone was happy to be able to see live music. Outdoors is the only way for me right now. Don't think I will be comfortable unless it is outside and everyone is not acting like nothing is going on. I've been a couple of places where they are not concerned and weren't wearing masks. They are also very young and probably realize it won't kill them, just us older farts, and they may not really give a rats patootie about that." - Sherry Umscheid/Lawrence, KS

We're interested in your thoughts:
- Have you attended?
- If so, how was the vibe (i.e. joyous, awkward, crowding, etc.)
- If not, when will you feel comfortable attending?
- If you're a musician, have you performed live for an audience recently?
- If so, how was the vibe and attendance?

Email me 100 words MAX with "VENUES OPENING" in subject line. Tell us where in the world you're located. Feel free to send me a pic of your favorite blues music experience if you like, too.

Wishing you all good health and peace,

Singer Lady A on name dispute with country band: 'That’s their nickname. This is my professional name'
ABC News/Allie Yang & Sabina Ghebremedhin
Blues and soul singer Anita White won’t back down from “Lady A,” the moniker she’s used for decades.

“I have built this name for decades,” White told ABC News. “I’m an independent artist… We grind every day to do what we do. Black folks, indigenous people … we grind even harder. Sometimes all we have is our name. We don’t want to have that taken away from us.”

White was speaking in reference to country music group Lady Antebellum, which recently shortened its name to "Lady A," a nickname used by the band's fans for years.

The band made the decision last month to drop “Antebellum” from its name amid an international reckoning on racial inequality. The word refers to the period of American history before the Civil War and is associated with slavery.

The group, most famous for their hit “Need You Now,” tried to reach an agreement with White, a Seattle-based artist, so they could both use the name without conflict. At first, they seemed to be on their way to an amicable agreement -- even discussing a possible song together -- when talks failed and the country group brought a lawsuit seeking a declaratory judgment affirming its right to use the name last week.

King Biscuit Festival postponed until 2021
Ark Times/Stephanie Smittle
(HELENA, AR) - The King Biscuit Blues Festival, which won Best Live Music Festival in our 2020 Best of Arkansas poll, is postponed until next year, with Executive Director Munnie Jordan adding the following in a press release:he King Biscuit Blues Festival, which won Best Live Music Festival in our 2020 Best of Arkansas poll, is postponed until next year, with Executive Director Munnie Jordan adding the following in a press release:

“We sincerely believe the ongoing pandemic potentially threatens the safety of our musicians, patrons, volunteers and staff, and we cannot take that chance,” said Munnie Jordan, executive director of the festival. “As fate would have it, the “Biscuit” was chosen as the Arkansas Times’ Best Live Music Festival for 2020,” added Jordan.

Since 1986, the King Biscuit Blues Festival has presented a remarkable lineup of blues from the Delta and around the world, and this year would have marked its 35th anniversary celebration. Fans and performers alike recognize the unmistakable influence of this indigenous art form that permeated rock music of the 1960s and ‘70s and whose influence can still be felt today.

Next year’s event promises to be the best ever, and keeping with tradition of it being the weekend before Columbus Day, the dates will be October 6-9, 2021. Artists who were scheduled for 2020 have been invited back, and they include headliner Mavis Staples and perennial favorites Bobby Rush, Billy Branch, Lonnie Shields, Anson Funderburgh, Reba Russell and Paul Thorn.

St. Louis Blues Society Sends $90,000 To Musicians Facing Hard Times In The Pandemic
In August, the St. Louis Blues Society will make a print available based on Cbabi Bayoc’s newly painted portrait (left) of singer Renee Smith, who is nicknamed the Queen of St. Louis Soul.

(ST. LOUIS, MO) - The St. Louis Blues Society has raised more than $90,000 to help musicians who lost their livelihoods during the coronavirus pandemic.

The blues society has distributed grants of $500 or more to 150 artists who lost their ability to work in March when officials prohibited large gatherings to limit the spread of the virus.

The St. Louis Community Foundation’s Gateway Resilience Fund contributed $75,000 to the effort.

Though some live performances have been held outside in recent weeks, opportunities for musicians to perform have remained scarce.

“It really cut into musicians’ funding and money and stuff — especially people who are depending on this on a regular basis,” said Marty D. Spikener, 64, a blues drummer and bandleader.

Spikener received $500 from the blues society’s Mission Fund. The grant represents only a fraction of the income he’s lost during the pandemic, but he used it to pay a medical bill.

St. Louis Blues Society started its Mission Fund in 2002 to help musicians facing hard times. Since the pandemic began, it has directed all of its funds to recipients who have lost work because of the coronavirus, said Jeremy Siegel-Moss, chairperson of its board of directors.

In addition to funds from the Gateway Resilience Fund, the blues society received a contribution from the National Blues Museum and raised money from sales of a limited-edition print. It commissioned a portrait of late blues legend Henry Townsend, who lived in St. Louis for many years, from local artist Cbabi Bayoc.  …Read full story by Jeremy D. Delta Blues Museum Receives Mac Cares Emergency
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - Director Shelley Ritter announced today that Delta Blues Museum has been awarded a $11,100 MAC CARES Emergency Grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission. This grant is a portion of the approximately $441,100 in CARES Act COVID-19 recovery funding MAC received from the National Endowment for the Arts. The grant awarded to Delta Blues Museum will be used to support the immediate and necessary operational functions of the Museum.

"We are thankful for this much needed support during these uncertain times," says Ritter, adding, "This type of support is crucial to sustain the Museum as we work to address the challenges of how to safely serve our audience."

Using funds from the CARES Act, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded almost $30 million to the nation's 50 states, the District of Columbia and several territories including Puerto Rico. A state arts agency, MAC established the MAC CARES Emergency Grants program to distribute these funds and provide economic relief as quickly as possible while focusing assistance on independent arts organizations with staff.

18th Annual Blues Festival Guide Magazine (Print and Digital Editions) Released
(ARCATA, CA) — RBA Publishing has announced the launch of the 18th annual Blues Festival Guide magazine in both print and digital formats.

The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of presenting blues to a wider audience, and therefore offers a weekly, electronic newsletter: Blues Festival E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.

“With so many festivals postponing or canceling, it was uncertain if we would publish it this year, but the readers kept asking,” says publisher, Kaati Gaffney. “We received countless personal calls and emails from advertisers and readers alike and have been bombarded with magazine orders. It seems the more we all sat at home during this pandemic, the more we thought about music and its ability to generate well-being and connection. Even though festival offerings are slimmer this year, there are still quite a few events planned for the summer and fall.”

Blues legend Bobby Rush calls the magazine: The Roadmap to Everything Blues. Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all blues related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in the blues community.

Here’s a sneak peek:
- Living Legend: Charlie Musselwhite By Eric Steiner
- Blues Movies Reel Away the Blues By Roger Stolle
