Uplifting Country-Reggae Single “Green Lights” Just Released from Songcrafter Gary Wertz aka ‘GRW’ Featuring Junior Toots
|
Are you looking for a positive musical affirmation to start your day? The summer hit single, “Green Lights”, is just that. Written and performed by prolific singer/songwriter Gary Russell Wertz aka GRW (Grow without the ‘O’) and featuring Junior Toots (son of reggae legend Toots — of Toots and the Maytals), this song is an earworm… it just gets stuck in your head as it melds two genres: country and reggae in a perfect blend of feel good.
In 2020, as sh*t hit the fan, music fans were looking for upbeat music, something to help them clear their heads and to feel more hopeful. GRW’s response to this need was to write “Green Lights”, a precursor to the forthcoming album HYBRIDS on Aleada Records Label (reggae legend Marcia Griffiths’ son, Marcus Thompson).
Gary and his wife Lisa were formerly cannabis farmers for two decades in the reggae Mecca of Mendocino County in Northern California and deeply entrenched in the industry (Gary’s wife, Lisa, was the mama that helped birthed the renowned Emerald Cup). This gifted musician, Gary Wertz, relocated his family to Tennessee, to an 18th Century farmstead they call Sacred Dog Ranch & Recording Studio. They consider themselves ‘climate refugees’ having had to leave their beloved farm in Northern California to escape ongoing wildfires. It is here, just west of Nashville, that Gary combined two kinds of roots: Americana-Country roots with Jamaican roots music to create “Green Lights.”
The new album, his 12th, called HYBRIDS is due to be released later this year. “Green Lights is the only reggae track”, explains Gary. “The rest of the songs are different styles of rock with a strong country flavor.”
Gary has over 11 albums (on vinyl, CD and digital) under his belt and several different incarnations of bands including Strawberry Smog a psychedelic folk-rock group that released four albums; Hot Mute, his first band he formed in San Francisco — an 80’s synth-pop classic rock band reminiscent of the Kinks, Cars and Rolling Stones — and his current incarnation: GRW, his solo project.
Gary is the first to admit he is all over the place with his styles. “You can’t pigeon-hole me. If you have eclectic tastes like I do, check out my body of work, but whether you’re a reggae fan or not, I feel positive that everyone will like “Green Lights.”
Junior Toots collaborated on this single; they were introduced through a mutual friend, artist Desmond George Smith (whom GRW co-produced a reggae album with). On-the-spot, GRW and Junior Toots clicked, and Lisa felt that Junior Toots was exactly the right fit for the song. He agreed, and gladly contributed. Gary adds, “Junior is a beautiful human being and the real deal in reggae. It's an honor to work with him.”
Jamaican-born Junior Toots has a genuine commitment to socially conscious lyrics and a determination to express himself sincerely from within. This passion can be felt through his deeply soulful vocal style that is reminiscent of his father, renowned reggae artist Toots Hibbert, of the Toots and the Maytals.
“Green Lights” is available for purchase on iTunes for .99 and is also available to stream on Spotify and several other platforms (https://linktr.ee/GRW).
This ‘country-ragga’ or ‘mountain reggae’ tune offers something for everybody; you can roll up your fatty or do practice your yoga to it; an all-around, uplifting summer soundtrack.
Listen yourself; you’ll be hooked!

Reggae classic ‘One Love’ re-issued to help children upended by COVID crisis
|
The iconic Bob Marley song One Love is to be re-released with the blessing of the musician’s family to support children whose lives have been upended by COVID-19, the UN said on Thursday.
The fundraising initiative comes as the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned that an additional 6,000 children could die every day from preventable causes in the next six months.
Almost all of them live in developing countries, where the coronavirus pandemic has placed additional strain on already fragile health systems and basic services.
Call for unity, then and now
Issued in 1977 by Bob Marley and the Wailers, with a call for unity and to tackle the suffering of children, a new version of the much-loved reggae anthem will go on sale on Friday 17 July.
It features members of the Marley family, world-renowned musicians, artists from conflict zones and children from vulnerable communities.
“Over 40 years ago, my father wrote One Love about unity, peace and universal love during a time when there was much trouble in the world”, said Cedella Marley. “Even in a time when we aren’t able to ‘get together’, his message remains true today: we can get through this global crisis if we come together through one love and one heart.”
The project also has the support of jewellery brand Pandora, which has pledged to match every dollar raised to purchase One Love, up to the value of $1 million.
A bid for greater equality
All proceeds will support Reimagine, UNICEF’s global campaign to prevent the COVID-19 emergency from becoming a lasting crisis for children.
“One Love speaks directly to one key truth about this pandemic: our best hope to defeat COVID-19 and to reimagine a more equal, less discriminatory world for children is through global solidarity and co-operation”, said UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore. “We are delighted that the Marley family along with Pandora have lent their generous support, creativity and love to help the most vulnerable children.”
In addition to the immediate health impact of COVID-19 on children and their families, UNICEF has warned that youngsters have been affected indirectly too, through school closures, food shortages, limited access to basic healthcare and disruptions to medical supply chains.

Top literature prize for Linton Kwesi Johnson
|
Linton Kwesi Johnson has been awarded this year’s PEN Pinter Prize.Linton Kwesi Johnson has been awarded this year’s PEN Pinter Prize. Judges praised his work, saying: “Few post-war figures have been as unwaveringly committed to political expression in their work.” The local poet and reggae artist will receive the award in a digital ceremony co-hosted by the British Library on 12 October.
The prize was established in 2009 by the charity English PEN, which defends freedom of expression and celebrates literature, in memory of the Nobel Laureate playwright Harold Pinter.
The judges who awarded this year’s prize were The Guardian’s associate editor for culture Claire Armitstead, Dialogue Books publisher Sharmaine Lovegrove, and author Max Porter.
Armitstead said: “Once we had laid our nominations on the table, it took all of two seconds to agree that we had a clear and outstanding winner for the PEN Pinter Prize 2020.
“Linton Kwesi Johnson is a poet, reggae icon, academic and campaigner, whose impact on the cultural landscape over the last half century has been colossal and multi-generational.
“His political ferocity and his tireless scrutiny of history are truly Pinteresque, as is the humour with which he pursues them.” Max Porter said: “I can think of few people who more clearly embody the power of poetry to enact change. Few post-war figures have been as unwaveringly committed to political expression in their work.

"MARCH" — Chezidek’s 2nd Single from Highly Anticipated Album,"HELLO AFRICA"
|
Produced by: Desbert ‘ Chezidek’ Johnson Executive Producers: Tad A. Dawkins, and Tad A. Dawkins Jnr. In the current social climate, Chezidek has stepped up and continues his trend of producing conscious music with a positive message. His new single MARCH is a call for mobility and equality; reflecting the global movement of ‘justice for all’. “So much things going on with black people ‘round the world, so wi have a lot to sey,” Chezidek disclosed.
The roots singer’s latest album, Hello Africa, will be released on July 23, 2020 by Tad’s International Record and will go down as a special day for Chezidek; it is also the birthday of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I. The date is important to Chezidek who, like all Rastafarians, revere Selassie as an omnipotent figure. Produced by his Cheziberry Records, he believes Hello Africa is his most hard-hitting work to date, boosted by songs like "Because I’m Black", and "March." "Because I’m Black", a jab at institutionalized racism, sets the tone for Hello Africa and the second single "March" calls to global unification and action to tackle the injustices of the world.
Keep your ears open and receive the inspiration to MARCH!

"Everything that I am stating is obvious. What is the obvious? That you are alive. This is obvious. That peace that you look for is inside of you. That is obvious. Everything else, in a moment's notice, can change. The only thing that doesn't change is your strength, your beauty, your joy. You, after all, are a human being."
In essence, he says that peace is a human necessity, that peace is possible, and that it begins with each of us.
