N.C. Folk Festival and Carolina Blues Festival return Sept. 11-13
GREENSBORO — The annual N.C. Folk Festival and Carolina Blues Festival return Sept. 11-13. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's blues festival has gone primarily virtual, partnering with the annual N.C. Folk Festival. Performances begin at 6 p.m. daily.
Folk festival organizers partnered with 7 Cinematics to film live performances of 10 acts playing at iconic local spots. Those pre-recorded live performances will stream online and on the Greensboro Television Network.

Look for mostly North Carolina acts playing blues, bluegrass, country, R&B, soul, pop, hip-hop, funk, rock and old-time tunes.

Following the folk festival segment Saturday night, The Piedmont Blues Preservation Society will present its 34th annual Carolina Blues Festival virtually at 8 pm and NC Folk Festival. A featured performance entitled "Women of the Blues," will be headlined by Vanessa Ferguson, a local resident who was also a finalist on "The Voice." Veronika Jackson, a Georgia-based acoustic folk/blues artist, will pay tribute to the late Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten, an American blues and folk musician, singer and songwriter from Carrboro. That performance was filmed at the Underground Railroad tree at Guilford College. The blues society also will present two awards.

The Hamiltones, the Charlotte and Greensboro-based R&B/soul trio started as backup vocalist for Grammy Award-winning soul singer Anthony Hamilton will also perform Saturday. Members are Corey "2E" Williams II from Greensboro, Tony Lelo from Morrisville and J. Vito, who grew up in Anson County. The group filmed its show in front of the International Civil Rights Center and Museum in center city.

Sunday’s acts will include Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba: This Pittsboro-based, kora-led dance band combines West African traditionals, funk, rock, blues and elements of jazz. Their performance was filmed at the Greensboro Rotary Carousel at the Greensboro Science.
Roy Rogers Hopes to Reduce the Blues

(GRASS VALLEY) - In the PCE — pre-COVID era — Roy Rogers would appear on stage with his band, the Delta Rhythm Kings, and perhaps a special guest or two.

Ah, the times they are a changin’. And, in an option to hanging out at home in Nevada City, blues guitarist Roy Rogers delivers a solo, live-streamed performance Sept. 20 at the Center for Performing Arts in Grass Valley.

Proceeds from the show go to MusiCares, a charity that has provided more than $60 million in health, financial, and rehabilitation resources to music people in times of need.
“Just me and some of my favorite guitars,” Rogers said Tuesday afternoon, acknowledging that it’s rare to not look around and see fellow musicians during a gig.
“I have had the idea of performing a solo show for awhile — some songs and maybe some stories from my travels as well,” the Vallejo native said.

Rogers, 70, said he “can’t say enough good things” about MusiCares.

“They are really a great part of The Recording Academy and are a top-rated charity organization,” Rogers said. “A great many musicians have received assistance from them and so many more need help now during the pandemic. I just wanted to support them in some way and thought that a solo concert would be a good way to help raise donations toward their efforts.”

The pandemic, obviously, has challenged many musicians including Rogers.

Thoughts about venues opening... share yours!
Hey Blues Fans!! We see some music venues are opening up around the country. Albeit, opening then closing then opening, etc.

Here's a message from a reader:
"I am a long suffering, quarantined blues fan, but I have decided we break out on Oct 2 to see Taz Neiderhauer at a local venue that are doing shows on the outdoor deck. First blues show they have booked, and we can’t wait!"

Don Lewis
Charleston, SC

We're interested in your thoughts:
- Have you attended any shows and where?
- If so, how was the vibe (i.e. joyous, awkward, crowded, etc.)
- If not, when will you feel comfortable attending?
- If you're a musician, have you performed live for an audience recently?
- If so, how was the vibe and attendance?

Email me 100 words MAX and make sure to put "VENUES OPENING" in subject line (so it doesn't get lost in my email). Tell us where in the world you're located. Feel free to send me a pic of your favorite blues music experience if you like, too.

Wishing you all good health and peace,
Michele

Reverend Freakchild :: THE BODHISATTVA BLUES
Several musical movements in the 1960s spurned a renewed interest in the blues beginning with the folk music revival out of Greenwich Village, then the British invasion and culminating with the psychedelic blues rock scene. By 1968 Haight Ashbury in San Francisco had become the epicenter of the free-spirited hippie movement as the home of the Grateful Dead, a band who personified the ideals and spearheaded the new jam band genre mixing blues, folk, jazz and rock and roll in a loose freeform style. Fans of the band call themselves Deadheads, and many musicians have tried to emulate their sound. Reverend Freakchild is a spawn of that legend. He grew up in Hawaii and holds a degree in philosophy and religion from Northeastern University in Boston. The Colorado musician performs when he calls “Psychedelic Country Blues,” proclaiming “music is my religion. Through song I seek transcendence.”

On his 12th album, The Bodhisattva Blues, the Reverend resurrects classic blues and rock tunes from Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, and The Beatles, along with Grateful Dead favorites. Primarily a solo performer, the Reverend invited musicians from the extended Grateful Dead musical family to form his backing band – keyboard Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band), guitarist Marc Karan (Bob Weir, RatDog, Live Dead), drummer Chris Parker (Bob Dylan, John Hammond, Jr.), and Robin Sylvester (RatDog) on bass, with percussionist Jason Hann (String Cheese Incident). Special guests include harmonica master Hugh Poof (New York Blues Hall of Fame “Master Artist”) and young blues guitarist A.J. Fullerton.
