Thoughts about venues opening or not... share yours!
Hey Blues Fans!! Some blues music venues are opening up around the country. Albeit, opening then closing. What are your thoughts and/or experiences?

We're interested in your thoughts:
- Have you attended or performed any live shows since the pandemic and where?
- If so, how was the vibe (i.e. joyous, awkward, attendance, etc.)
- If not, when will you feel comfortable attending?

Email me 100 words MAX and make sure to put "VENUES OPENING" in subject line (so it doesn't get lost in my email). Tell us where in the world you're located. Feel free to send me a pic of this blues music experience if you like, too.

Wishing you all good health and peace,
Michele

FedExForum hosts “Roots of Memphis Music” outdoor artwork
(MEMPHIS, TN) - FedExForum may not be hosting any concerts in the near future, but music is back as an attraction for the venue.

The round concrete bollards that border the arena's plaza have been decorated by Memphis artists Mia Saine and Toonky Berry with portraits of such musicians as W.C. Handy, Al Green and Three 6 Mafia; representations of such studios as Sun and Stax; and symbols celebrating such themes as hip-hop and "Women in Music."

In other words, bollards that were placed outside FedExForum to impede traffic are now functioning as avenues to the world of Black Memphis music: Each sphere features a QR code that directs visitors to pages at MemphisTravel.com that explain the significance of the depicted person, place or theme, while also offering literal directions to such relevant locations as Royal Studio and the historic Handy home on Beale Street.

Dubbed "Roots of Memphis Music," the Black History Month initiative is a project of Memphis Tourism, also responsible for such public art projects as the "I Love Memphis" murals that can be found throughout the city. Also, the decorated bollards continue the Memphis music theme that runs throughout the interior of FedExForum, in the murals, photographs and drawings that adorn the walls of its public spaces.

"We just saw this as an opportunity to liven up that corner of B.B. King Boulevard and also tell a story about Memphis music history and connect visitors with landmarks and attractions," said Kevin Kern, vice president of public relations for Memphis Tourism, the agency that promotes local tourism. "There's a sense of discovery and exploration."

Also, the bollards "are right there at the front door of the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum," Kern pointed out, referring to the Smithsonian Institution-affiliated attraction that is on the south side the forum plaza. …Find full story here

County Order Requires Tampa Bay Blues Festival Postponement
(ST. PETERSBURG, FL) - Pinellas County, with jurisdiction over the City of St Petersburg, has just enacted an Emergency Covid-19 Order which places strict limitations on all special events, including the Tampa Bay Blues Festival. The Emergency Order was enacted in response to the Covid-19 crisis, and places stringent limitations on total attendance, gives the County the right to shut down the event in its sole discretion, and imposes civil and criminal penalties on any attendee or organizer who violates the Order. These restrictions require us to reschedule the festival for a new weekend date of April, 8, 9, and 10, 2022.

While our dates were approved by the City many months ago, this new Emergency Order makes proceeding with the festival in April 2021, a practical impossibility. We deeply regret this development. The health and safety of our blues family is our utmost concern, and current national virus conditions are trending negatively. Health officials warned yesterday that the latest UK Covid-19 variant, which is even more contagious, is likely to surge in Florida by March. Despite our full CDC compliance planning, this would render the festival too hazardous to proceed.

The rescheduled festival will give everyone a chance to receive the Covid vaccine, if desired, and will also give us the necessary time to present an enjoyable and safer festival. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to you, and we thank you for your understanding and support. We are strongly committed to bring this show to St. Petersburg when conditions improve.

Cary Morin :: DOCKSIDE SAINTS
Guitar virtuoso Cary Morin’s Dockside Saints features 12 powerful tracks of spirited gumbo combining Zydeco, Cajun and Creole with generous portions of Piedmont blues and country, and dashes of gospel and folk. The mixture is spicy and soul-satisfying.

Morin’s breathtaking fingerstyle dexterity, remarkable artistry, and innate acumen put him in a class by himself. As a songwriter, he has the rare ability to combine world-weary wisdom with relentless optimism. His voice has both depth and buoyancy; it’s both raw and warm. Morin fuses these qualities into a genre that is uniquely his own: Native Americana. It’s a distinctive hybrid of American roots music, with elements of blues, jazz, rock, bluegrass, country — and, in Dockside Saints, a heavy dose of the bayou. His singular sound has earned him countless awards and fans all over the world.

Recorded at Dockside Studio in Maurice, LA, Dockside Saints was produced and engineered by multi-Grammy winning producer/engineer, Tony Daigle.

“The ancient Native culture of the South has been an inspiration as it relates to our travels and what has become an annual pilgrimage to the Mississippi Valley,” says Morin. “This collection of songs represents our annual migration, just as my ancestors migrated from this region to the Western Plains so many centuries ago; sharing culture through music and more along the way. It is the product of our imagination of what was, and what has become our love of the sounds of the south.”

Savoy Brown :: AIN’T DONE YET
Ain’t Done Yet from legendary blues-rock band Savoy Brown on Quarto Valley Records has recently been nominated for a 2021 Blues Music Award Rock Blues Album of the Year.

“The new album is a continuance of the approach I’ve been taking with the band this past decade,” says guitarist, singer, songwriter Kim Simmonds, who formed the band in 1965 in London, England, and is one of the longest running blues-rock bands in existence. “The big difference with the new album is the multi-layer approach I took to recording the guitar parts. It’s all blues-based rock music. I try to find new and progressive ways to write and play the music I’ve loved since I was a young teenager.”

Simmonds has been the group's guiding hand from the first singles released in 1966 through this newest effort, Savoy Brown’s 41st album release. On the new record, Simmonds (guitar harmonica and vocals) is once again joined by his long-running bandmates Pat DeSalvo (bass) and Garnet Grimm (drums).

Energetic blues has been the calling card of the band from the beginning, but Simmonds infuses the 10 tracks on Ain’t Done Yet with a new spirit and vitality - plus some serious guitar chops - in a variety of styles and roots sounds that transcend the blues-rock idiom. “I emphasized song content on the new album, yet I left plenty of room for band improvisation,” he admits. “For instance, there are two acoustic-based songs and also two six-minute songs where I’m able to stretch out on guitar solos.”
