Debbie Bond :: BLUES WITHOUT BORDERS
"Blues Without Borders"

"Bond has sure paid her dues over the years working alongside such notables as the late Willie King, where she was a band member and with the legendary Johnny Shines, an old road-buddy of Robert Johnson. With such a heritage and background, it comes as no surprise to find this bit of true blues gold. Blues for our times from a lady who knows what she's about. Highly recommended, grab it while you can." Ian Patience, Blues Magazine

“Sixth in the series of Debbie’s contemporary run of recordings, Blues Without Borders stretches her reach in her field of genres: traditional blues, blues-rock, Southern soul and now world music. Writing from the heart’s experience and expectations, her original songs are never dry words set in sound.

Stepping in now are new outlooks caused by world and local situations strained through the universal sieve of the pandemic. Pleas for trust and faith in each other run alongside declarations like “Let Me Be” and “Blue Rain.” “Winds of Change” and “Shades of Blue” wear the Muscle Shoals style like an old tattoo. Surely Willie King smiles each time a new listener plugs into “Let Freedom Ring” – a true anthem in the ‘70s style that could be played on a solo piano or thronged with a full orchestra and chorus. Rich Asherton’s electric piano reminds us of Leon Russell driving Joe Cocker’s band during those big concert days.

Then there is that lived-in amenity of guest saxophonist Ray Carless on “Blues Without Borders” and “Heart of the Matter.” A Jamaican, long residing in London’s jazz scene, Carless’ phrasing and placements set these songs like conversations around a table.

Some albums are once-and-done. Blues Without Borders will seduce the ears of those who find comfort in repeated listening. It is one of those albums that opens windows to let the curtains dance.”
- Dave Gallaher “Talkin’ the Blues with Microwave Dave” Radio Show.

Take the Harmonica, Tell the World How You Feel
By Gabi Mendick
When Charles Burroughs was only 8 years old in Tampa, Florida, his peers picked him on because of a speech impediment. To avoid their incessant bullying, Charles chose not to speak at all. Over a much needed summer break, Charles went to visit his great-grandfather in Plains, Georgia, a musician who simultaneously blew harp and strummed a handmade guitar formed from an orange crate and broomsticks. That summer, Charles’ great-grandfather gave him a harmonica and told him, “I want you to take this harmonica and tell the world how you feel.”

If you witness what Charles describes as his “down in the gutter, back alley, storytelling blues” today, you’ll know he has learned to use the harmonica to tell the world how he feels. In the 65 years since he first picked up the instrument, he has more than earned his moniker, Sugar Harp.

Sugar Harp’s music is all his own, and in his songs you can feel the places he’s been. In 1969, Sugar was hanging with Jimi Hendrix at the Fillmore East and hitched a ride to Woodstock on a whim. The following year, he was drafted into the Air Force and began serving in the 56th Fighter Wing in Vietnam. His experiences from New York to Vietnam, the partying and the struggling, shape Sugar’s character and his music.

But a year and a half ago, new Music Maker partner artist Sugar Harp found himself sugarless and harpless. On November 26, 2019, driving his van — packed with all of his treasured belongings, including his harmonicas — through his current hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, Sugar Harp noticed a driver in another vehicle motioning to him frantically. Sugar’s van was becoming engulfed in flames. …Read full story at MusicMaker

Just in case:
Well, Aug 28th is "National Red Wine Day!" Lots of songs talk about the ups and downs of wine... for instance the complimentary reference in "Pride & Joy (Stevie Ray Vaughan), the resolution in "Trying To Live My Life Without You" (Otis Clay), the carefree "Drinking Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee" (Sticks McGhee), and the desperation of "Cherry Red Wine" (Luther Allison).
