Felix Slim :: OVERSEAS BLUES
"Overseas Blues"

Felix Slim is the 2020 International Blues Challenge (IBC) 2nd Place Solo/Duo Winner and Lee Oskar Best Harmonica Award winner and one of Spain’s leading blues musicians. Born in the North African enclave of Ceuta and based in Long Island City, New York, Felix Slim is an entirely self-taught multi-instrumentalist and specializes in blues, ragtime and swing from the 1920s to the 1940s.

Influenced by the Delta, Piedmont and Texas sound, Slim uses slide guitar, fingerpicking and standard and open tunings, and has played his dynamic versions of blues classics and original songs with echoes of flamenco, rebetiko and jazz manouche on eight albums and in over fourteen countries worldwide.

Expertly swapping between harmonica and kazoo along with his unique singing voice complement each other, creating a fresh and distinctive yet true vintage sound. His ability to connect and involve the audience has developed a compelling live show, which combines the humor and warmth of his native Andalusia with the gritty reality of country blues.

In addition to these styles, he plays electric guitar and sings in his own Felix Slim Blues Band, delivering a mix of 1950s and 1960s electric blues, swing, R&B and early soul/funk.

Felix Slim is touring and promoting his new solo album, Overseas Blues, recorded at Binky Griptite’s Studio in Brooklyn, New York.

Gibson Guitars Recreates Iconic Johnny Winter 1964 Explorer V
By Carter Alan/WZLX
Gibson Guitars has been crafting legendary guitars for the past 127 years. Now the Gibson Custom Shop is paying tribute to a true guitar hero with the release of the Johnny Winter 1964 Firebird V, based on the late player's personal and most well-known Firebird guitar. It’s not often that a guitar captures the essence of an artist, but Johnny Winter’s 1964 Firebird V perfectly matched his style and persona. Only a guitar as cool as the Firebird could keep up with the rip-roaring power and lightning-fast licks of the incendiary bluesman and classic rocker Johnny Winter. The Johnny Winter 1964 Firebird V isn’t just a reissue, it’s a complete replication of an iconic guitar. From the plugged holes and removed Maestro Vibrola, to the faded Firebird logo on the pickguard, right down to the missing reflector on the rhythm tone knob, this 1964 Firebird V in Murphy Lab custom-aged Polaris White finish brings the original to life for a new generation of players.

American singer and guitarist Johnny Winter was renowned across the globe for his high-energy blues rock albums and live performances. Johnny Winter played Woodstock, bringing his younger brother Edgar onstage that night and jammed with everyone from Muddy Waters to Jimi Hendrix and Steve Ray Vaughan. A torchbearer for the blues, Winter also championed and aided the careers of his idols Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Winter both created and produced multiple GRAMMY Award-winning blues albums and revitalized Waters' career, also playing on the bluesman's albums Hard Again (1977), I'm Ready (1978), and Muddy "Mississippi" Waters – Live (1979). …Read in full

Just in case: "December 21 is National Short Girl Appreciation Day."  I was going to see if I can find the height of some blues ladies... I really only found that Bonnie Raitt is 5'4"and Sippie Wallace looks shorter than her in this photo at right... but this has ended up like finding a needle in a haystack so I need to move on. But you know there's a lot of us shorty's out there even if we might even look taller onstage! (I get asked that at times actually and I'm only 5'2"... these days!). And if you’re a short girl yourself you know at least your feet are never going to hang off the bed.

I often wonder if anyone reads these these things I dig up! If so, I hope this short girl at least gets you to crack a smile.
