News Flash...
29th Annual MLK Blues Festival Jan 15-30, 2022
(CHESTER, SC) - The MLK Blues Festival will feature three weekends of celebration at Carolina Hall (119 College St.) in Chester, South Carolina beginning on Jan 15-16, then Jan 22-23, and Jan 29-30. Headliners include Johnny Rawls and Robert Kimbrough.

“The 29th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Blues Festival is an American original”, says David Claytor, founder and director of the festival. “For times like these, let’s make it better. Support Martin Luther King Jr. ideals and principles. Join us in exercising, experiencing harmony and love and appreciation for each other and good times.”
Tickets and more information at 803-209-7312.
MLK Day Celebration features Blues Musician, Author and Lecturer Daryl Davis Jan 14 & Jan 16
(McLEAN, VA) - The McLean Community Center (MCC) has expanded its Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration over the weekend this year by offering two events featuring musician and race relations expert Daryl Davis.

The Daryl Davis Band will perform at 7 pm on Friday, January 14, in The Alden Theatre. On Sunday January 16 at 2pm, Davis will return to The Alden to speak on his experiences confronting Ku Klux Klansmen on their racist beliefs.

Davis is a boogie-woogie pianist who has played with the likes of B. B. King, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. On Friday, he and his band will kick off MCC’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend with an evening of R&B and blues. This is the music that opened the door for Klansmen to befriend Davis, a Black man, and eventually, hang up their robes.

The McLean Community Center is located at 234 Ingleside Ave., in McLean, Virginia. Tickets to Friday’s concert are $30/$20 for MCC district residents. Tickets to Sunday’s event are $10/$5 for MCC district residents.
Roots Music Report's Top 200 Blues Albums of 2021
Roots Music Report is the number one independent music chart in the world. They compile radio airplay data from radio stations around the globe that play all forms of roots music, so that each week you can see which independent artists are being played the most and by what stations are playing them. They do not alter, accept payment for, or manipulate the airplay data to give special rankings on our charts. Stations reporting their play list is the only way for artist to appear on the Roots Music Report charts and they do not pick and choose which DJ's and stations may report.

Here's the Top 10 as a teaser of the Top Blues Albums of 2021:
1- 662 by Christone "Kingfish" Ingram (Alligator)
2- Damage Control by Curtis Salgado (Alligator)
3- Raisin' Cain by Chris Cain (Alligator)
4- Tommy Castro Presents a Bluesman Came to Town by Tommy Castro (Alligator)
5- You Ain’t Unlucky by Veronica Lewis (Blue Heart)
6- Holler if You Hear Me by Altered Five Blues Band (Blind Pig)
7- Little Black Flies by Eddie 9V (Ruf)
8- Tempting Fate by Carolyn Wonderland (Alligator)
9- Pinky's Blues by Sue Foley (Stony Plain)
10- Living in a Burning House by Selwyn Birchwood (Alligator)

Stax Museum & Stax Music Academy Celebrate Black History Month Feb 2022
In February 2022, the Stax Museum and Stax Music Academy will release original, free Black History Month virtual productions that offer two distinct but complementary celebrations of Black American Music and its impact on American culture. We invite you to join us and help youth all over the world experience the evolution and magnetism of American Soul Music.

Register today for the free, online, virtual Black History Month 2022 tour/field trip, which will focus on the achievements of Stax icons Mavis Staples of the Staple Singers, promotions man/eventual label owner Al Bell, drummer Al Jackson, Jr., and songwriter/recording artist Bettye Crutcher.

In Magnetic South: All Signs Point to Soulsville USA, school children, young people (particularly those with little access to the arts), classrooms, youth groups, and viewers of all ages will learn how these history makers were drawn to the opportunities in Soulsville USA, how the community influenced them, what they contributed, and how their legacies continue to inform and inspire the personal and professional journeys of musicians across Memphis and people throughout the world. Register today at no cost and they will send you the link to view this black history month tour closer to the Feb 1st date.

An added bonus is Stax Music Academy – Soul of America: An Evolution of Black American Music. Join Stax Music Academy students as they explore the people, places, politics, economics, and culture that gave birth to Black American music that continues to be relevant decades later. In this virtual celebration, our talented students will perform a series of videos performing music from the early sounds through today. Register for this at no cost here.
Toronto’s January Blues Summit & Maple Blues Awards Postponed to June
(TORONTO, CANADA) — The Toronto Blues Society announced that the 2021 Blues Summit and the 25th annual Maple Blues Awards have been pushed back to June due to current provincial restrictions and travel limitations imposed due to the latest surge in COVID-19 cases.

The Blues Summit will now take place from June 17-20, 2022, and the winners for this year’s Maple Blues Awards will be announced on June 20, 2022, at Koerner Hall in Toronto.

Hosted by Ottawa’s Angelique Francis, the Maple Blues Awards will feature performances from five current nominees, including Bobby Dean Blackburn, who is nominated for the Blues With A Feeling (Lifetime Achievement) Award, multiple nominee Sue Foley, who is up for Entertainer of the Year, Electric Act of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Recording/Producer of the Year, and Guitarist of the Year.

Female Vocalist of the Year nominee Crystal Shawanda, Songwriter of the Year nominee Kat Danser, and Colin Linden, who is nominated for Recording/Producer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year, will also take the stage during the event.

Blues Foundation Important Update!
IBC & KBA Awards Luncheon Postponed for 2022
(MEMPHIS, TN) - The Blues Foundation Board of Directors has made the very difficult decision to postpone the 37th International Blues Challenge that was to take place January 18-22, 2022.

While this decision is coming at a late stage, it was not made lightly. As recently as mid-December, the COVID-19 pandemic and Omicron variant seemed under control, as vaccination rates were growing and large events were taking place successfully with safety protocols in place. The past couple of weeks, however, have shown a significant increase in positive cases not only in the US but globally. Memphis has seen its highest spike in positive cases this week since the inception of the pandemic.

After consulting with our IBC partners including hospitality vendors, event venues, and merchants; as well as with the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Department, similar organizations, and members of our blues community, the decision was made to postpone IBC until later in 2022.
We recognize this will be a great disappointment to the challengers, affiliates, fans, and supporters, but we hope each of you understands our primary concern in making this decision is your safety and wellbeing.

The Blues Foundation is actively working with our IBC partners to determine a new event date, and we will share that news as soon as possible.

Details regarding ticket options will come in a follow-up email. Room reservations can be canceled or changed directly with your hotel.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding. We’ll see you back on Beale soon!

For questions or concerns, please contact The Blues Foundation’s Board Chair, Scott Fitzke via email.

Just in case:
January 10 is Peculiar People Day, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate those who refuse to conform to the world’s idea of normal. It is always the people who are termed "peculiar" and "different," that set the world in motion because they live “out of the box.” They refuse to accept and live by the status quo and have the courage to do and be different.

Sounds like creative artists past and present!
