Mary Stokes Band :: CLOUDS IN MY HEART
The Mary Stokes Band, Clouds In My Heart, is available for download or limited-edition CDs on Bandcamp now!

The Mary Stokes Band are Ireland’s foremost blues band, with an established international reputation of over 25 years, and have performed with blues greats John Lee Hooker, BB King, Taj Mahal, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino and many more. Partners Mary Stokes and Brian Palm have led The Mary Stokes Band, performing at blues festivals and venues across Ireland, USA and Europe.

With over 10 album releases, The Mary Stokes Band released their album Comin’ Home during the global pandemic. As independent artists, the pandemic obliged Mary and Brian to seek out new ways to deliver their music to the public. Comin’ Home was independently released on Bandcamp in 2021 and has been an incredible success, reaching audiences through worldwide radio play and sales. The album was named Blues and Roots Radio “Album of the Year” for 2021.

With new recordings started, 2022 sees the first international release of The Mary Stokes Band’s seminal live album, Clouds In My Heart, originally recorded just before Christmas,1999. It was possibly the last blues record of the 20th Century and definitely one of the first of the new millennium. The popular success of the "as live" album Comin' Home (2020) inspired them to relaunch the fully live Clouds In My Heart to a broader audience. Recorded in the landmark Bruxelles in Dublin, this album captures the live energy and vitality for which The Mary Stokes Band are widely known. This is the first time this album has been available other than at band's live shows.

Clouds In My Heart features Mary Stokes, vocals; Brian Palm, harmonica; Dermot Stokes, piano; Graham Hynes, guitar; Eoin O'Doherty, drums; Ken Matthews bass guitar; and Felim Gormley, saxophones.

Discover The Piedmont Blues
How did a culture that influenced the likes of Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, and the White Stripes stay hidden for so long? Learn about the Piedmont style and why its culture is alive and well today.

“Culture Doesn’t Die”

“A small, out of date, half-forgotten song tradition” was how early blues field researcher Samuel Charters described the Piedmont or East Coast blues in his 1984 liner notes to a Pink Anderson album. But it’s funny. It’s hard to find something when you aren’t looking for it.

“The standard story of the blues is that it was born in the Mississippi Delta and then came to Chicago and then the U.K., where the British picked it up. But it’s a bigger story than that,” says Music Maker co-founder Tim Duffy. Most modern music fans know the Piedmont blues because modern artists covered its makers’ songs. The Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan covered Elizabeth Cotten. The Dead also covered Rev. Gary Davis, and he was highly revered by the artists of the 1960s folk revival. Dylan, the Allman Brothers Band and the White Stripes performed the works of Blind Willie McTell (Dylan even named one of his own compositions after McTell).

Cotten, Davis and McTell — along with other Piedmont pioneers such as Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, who performed at the inaugural Newport Folk Festival in 1959 — cemented themselves in blues history. But the artists who’ve carried on in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic blues traditions have remained largely unknown to both scholars and record labels.

“It was a story that was not told — and it is delightful music,” Tim says. “Our first years were just finding all these guys in a wonderful, colorful quilt of music.” One reason Music Maker chose Hillsborough, North Carolina, as its headquarters was to be near the homeplaces of the Piedmont blues’ originators.

Just in case:
Mar 29 is "World Piano Day" which is celebrated on the 88th day of the year, which is the same as the number of keys on the piano. The piano was invented in the 1700's by one Bartolomeo Cristofori of Italy and evolved further by the early 1800s. Piano has a distinct history in the Blues. The list is long of memorable players like Pinetop Perkins, Otis Spann, Professor Longhair, Memphis Slim, Ray Charles, Katie Webster, Dr. John, Roosevelt Sykes, Charles Brown, Little Richard, and Julia Lee to honestly name just a few. Respect!
