Ryan Lee Crosby :: WINTER HILL BLUES
"Down So Long"

Songwriter/guitarist Ryan Lee Crosby may be from Boston, MA, but his musical home is in Mississippi. Fans can journey there either to see him at festivals or figuratively by listening to his new album Winter Hill Blues, produced at Delta-Sonic Sound in Memphis, TN by Bruce Watson, of Fat Possum, who produced all-time great albums by R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. Crosby has befriended GRAMMY-nominee Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, last purveyor of the Bentonia, MS style of blues most exemplified by Skip James. Guitar Player Magazine spotlighted Crosby in an article on the Bentonia style.

Crosby has also absorbed the hypnotic, one-chord stomps of North Mississippi Hill Country blues. With Watson as producer, Crosby knew he was in good hands, saying, “I’ve been deeply influenced by the albums Bruce has been associated with at Fat Possum, including classics by R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and Robert Belfour. To work with Bruce brought me full circle.” He proves himself a restlessly creative, master guitarist, playing both electric and acoustic 12-string guitars as well as lap-style guitar on Winter Hill Blues

This is no revivalist album! Crosby blends echoes of the sounds of Mali and India into his approach and writes about contemporary themes such as that seemingly-inescapable harried feeling that life in 2022 portends. “For me, Winter Hill Blues is the culmination of all those experiences and influences,” Crosby says. “I hear blues, Indian classical music, and Malian guitar as being interconnected through the common traits of a centered harmony, with an emphasis on melody, supported by repetition and rhythm, while singing the truth of one’s experience within a spare, beautiful framework that reflects an openness of mind and heart.” The album also includes an interpretation of “Wish I Was In Heaven Sitting Down” by Robert Wilkins, whom the Rolling Stones famously covered.

30th New York State Blues Fest a continuous river of music
(NEW YORK, NY) – The 30th anniversary of the New York State Blues Fest is happening June 16-18 at Chevy Court inside the New York State Fairgrounds. The festival is one of the largest free blues events in the Northeast. This annual 3-day musical celebration showcases a collection of regional and national artists from multiple genres, all with roots steeped in tradition and vision, and arranges them for a continuous river of music. Attendees are welcome to bring chairs and there will be plenty of room for dancing up front.

The festival features exciting acts on the main stage including Terrance Simien & the Zydeco Experience, The Kingsnakes, Clarence Spady, Vanessa Collier, JJ Grey & Mofro, and many more, plus acts each day on the side stage. A variety of food vendors will be onsite and wine and beer will be sold. Retail and craft vendors will also be set up market style.

The festival is free to attend, but there is a fee for parking, which is available in the Brown Lot for $10 per car and $5 per motorcycle. ADA parking is in the Emerald Lot. Proceeds from the parking fees help to offset expenses and to keep the New York State Blues Festival admission-free.

The New York State Blues Festival is produced through the support of corporate and private donations, local and state grants, and the dedication of more than 100 hard-working volunteers.
“Daughters of the Delta” World Premiere this weekend
(OAKLAND, CA) - “Daughters of the Delta” will premiere on Saturday, June 11, showtime 8pm; and Sunday, June 12 at 2pm at the Plymouth Jazz and Justice Church, 424 Monte Vista Ave., Oakland, California. Tickets are $20-$25.

By Andrew Gilbert
Michelle Jacques has traveled the world as a musical ambassador representing the deepest wellsprings of Black American music. Embracing her musical heritage at midlife after a successful administrative career, the New Orleans-born vocalist performed at far-flung festivals and concert halls with a cappella ensembles such as Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir, SoVoSo and Street Sounds.
At home in the Bay Area, the 69-year-old has played hundreds of community gigs and school performances leading her own a cappella group Juke Joint and her rollicking Gulf Coast combo Chelle and Friends. So it seems more than fitting that Jacques’ most ambitious musical undertaking yet, “Daughters of the Delta,” comes by way of a commission from the San Francisco International Arts Festival.

Featuring an array of songs by female African American composers and musicians hailing from Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the world premiere of “Daughters of the Delta” kicks off SFIAF’s summer concert series Saturday, June 11, at Oakland’s Plymouth Jazz and Justice Church (with a reprise performance Sunday, June 12). The program explores spirituals, gospel, jazz and blues to showcase the contributions of songwriters and performers like Lil Hardin Armstrong, Lizzie Miles and Blue Lu Barker, who wrote and recorded “Don’t You Feel My Leg,” a song reintroduced by Maria Muldaur on her 1973 debut album. …Continue reading

Just in case:
June 14th is "National Bourbon Day" Well, you know I'm gonna reference the classic, "One Bourbon, One Scotch, And One Beer," written by Rudy Toombs and first recorded in 1953 by Amos Milburn before John Lee Hooker recorded it in 1966 and George Thorogood hit with it in 1977! There's also the infamous Bourbon Street in Louisiana and Louis Prima's "Bourbon Street Blues."

Certainly there are other blues and roots songs that reference one of the best-loved alcoholic spirits in America but I can't recall off the top of my head so I resorted to Google. While this isn't the perfect solution by any means, I did find a band called Bourbon Blues Ensemble based in Leon, Mexico, in a crazy/zany video playing a rockin' jump boogie called, "Bourbon Boogie."

There's also a documentary called "Kentucky Bourbon Tales" for you distillery connoisseurs, or you songwriters that need some "bourbon inspired" inspirations. Then I found a non-fiction book called Bourbon & Blues on Amazon. Oh, and...there's also the Bourbon & Blues Festival coming Aug 20 to Cedar Ridge, Iowa.

June 14th is also "Monkey Around Day!" Take that however you like! HA! Just set aside your worries and toss out your inhibitions. Yeh baby! But remember... "You Can Have My Monkey" but please don't you mess with my man!
