Santa Barbara, California - Reggae on the Mountain has been the #1 and LA’s most successful and popular family-friendly, community-driven music and cultural event for over 10 years. Voted LA’s “BEST REGGAE FESTIVAL,” in celebration of the 11th Reggae on the Mountain, there’s big news. “We’re so excited to have the opportunity to expand our Reggae on the Mountain Festival to Santa Barbara for 2022 as we celebrate our eleventh edition,” note Brooks Ellis and Amit Gilad, co-founders of the popular Reggae Festival and co-owners of event company, Label 27.

The duo dreamed-up an event that would come to be one of the highlights of Southern California’s reggae scene — Reggae on the Mountain. The Festival has grown over the years and now debuts at its new home in Santa Barbara.

Now presenting the 11th edition of the successful celebration, Label 27’s Reggae on the Mountain festival takes roots reggae into the Santa Barbara for 3 days of music from international stars and heavy-hitting local and regional bands. Thousands of people are expected to attend this year’s festival which is new to Santa Barbara.
Over the years, ROTM has hosted big-name acts including reggae/dancehall DJ Yellowman, Julian Marley, original Black Uhuru member Don Carlos, Toots & The Maytals, Kymani Marley and the Easy Star All-Stars.

International Reggae Day 2022 Celebrates 60th Years of SKA - JULY 1
International Reggae Day (IRD), the annual global celebration of Jamaican music culture, will this year, spotlight “60 Years of Ska music”. IRD invites participating media around the world to highlight this important music culture which laid the foundation for Jamaica’s popular music as a global export. It is particularly fitting as Jamaica observes its 60th year of Independence.

The IRD2022 celebration will be powered by participating media through its virtual global media festival, complimented by a digital campaign across all social media platforms supported by key event partnerships hosted in select cities around the world. Participating media in Jamaica and internationally, are invited to spotlight the music and legends of Ska, and highlight the genre’s impact on Jamaican music culture and its global legacy.
Since its birth in Kingston's legendary studios including Sir Coxsone’s Studio One, Duke Reid's Treasure Isle, Prince Buster’s Blue Beat/Voice of the People, Ken Khourie's Federal Records and Leslie Kong's Beverly's Records, the quick tempo of Ska with its distinctive horns, was largely an instrumental music. The singers of the day, from The Maytals and The Wailers to Jimmy Cliff and Derrick Morgan, soon found a way however, to add their distinctive vocals, with many of the releases becoming classics in the genre.

The Alpha Boys School which has distinguished itself as Jamaica’s oldest music programme, contributed to the training of several key musicians who went onto record and tour with Studio One including members of the Skatalites.

Characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythm guitar chop (skank) on the off beat and signature horns, Ska was short in duration in Jamaica but long in creativity. From the pioneering genius of Jamaica’s first super band, The Skatalites, with ultra gifted foundation musicians including Rolando Alphonso, Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, Ernie Ranglin and Don Drummond were among the early architects of the Ska sound.

The early days of Ska are marked by releases like Monty Morris’ ‘Humpty Dumpty’ produced by Prince Buster in 1961 to his follow-up “Money Can’t Buy Life” along with Prince Buster’s own releases, ‘They Got to Go’, ‘They Got to Come’, ‘One Hand Washes Another’ and ‘Time Longer Than Rope’. Derrick Morgan’s ‘Forward March’, was among the biggest hits in Jamaica in 1962 and is an integral part of Jamaica’s independence soundtrack.

Since leaving the shores of Jamaica with the wave of migrants in the 1970s, Ska's second wave, known as Two Tone, hit the UK like a hurricane finding favour with the marginalized youth movement of the time - the mods, punks and skinheads. The unlikely courtship which began in Coventry, yielded a new version of the genre which became known as Ska-Punk, a faster edgier sound that appealed to young people on both sides of the racial divide in the UK.

Artistes who went on to be hitmakers in the genre included the likes of Millie Small whose 1964 cover of Barbie Gayle's My Boy Lollipop, was Jamaica's first commercially successful million selling international hit and remains one of the best selling Jamaican records of all time with over seven million copies sold.

Other chart toppers included Desmond Dekker, Stranger Cole, Justin Hinds and Laurel Aiken who were the first ambassadors for the new sound and all enjoyed great success in the UK market and beyond. Ska music was seeded in the UK, Germany and Spain and produced new ambassadors with the likes of The Specials, Madness, The English Beat and later Amy Winehouse, The Busters and Kortatu who went on to enjoy massive popularity playing to stadium sized audiences over the past five decades.

Reggae Festival Guide (RFG) Reasons with Da'Ville about life and his new project "Everytime It Rains"
RFG: Tell us about your new single "Everytime It Rains" that is releasing Friday, July 1st

First of all, special shout out to Ace Of Base the original creators/performers of this song. The first time I heard "Everytime It Rains", I instantly fell in love with it; it's been on my top 10 personal list of songs over the years to listen to and enjoy, but never thought I'd do it over in Reggae. Then one of my producers "Huddz" from the Solomon Islands suggested that I do it over in that genre. He created the beat and I produced my my vocals over it. When it was completed, I knew right away that we had something very special. And with me being a big of Ace Of Base fan, I just wanted to add to the greatness of what they had already created in my own expression. "Everytime It Rains" deals with the swirl of emotions you feel when you lose someone you love. It's a song that a lot of people are familiar with and I hope that my fans, supporters and music lovers in general will embrace this rendition.

RFG: Are you still living in Jamaica?
Officially I am now a "Floridian". Florida has been my home for some time now and I love it here. It's not too far from everything that I am used to. I love the fact that I can do a little gardening in my backyard. I can plant most of the same fruit trees like my mango, pineapple, sugar cane and other vegetables like I use to when I was in Jamaica, and everything is just a plane ride away. My kids were born here, and yes this is home.

RFG: We know you've received a lot of awards, could you please tell our readers about them?
2006 Stone Love Singer of the Year, 2006 EME Male Vocalist of the Year, 2006 Most Improved Entertainer IRAWMA Award, 2008 Reggae Academy Awards - Best Reggae Vocal Performance by Duo/Group/Collaboration for "On My Mind" featuring Sean Paul, 2008 EME Awards for Best Collaboration "On My Mind" featuring Sean Paul.

RFG:How do you describe your musical style?
My musical style is a bit out the box. I call it fusion with an edge. Fusion between the multiple genres that inspire me: Reggae, Roots, Hip Hop, Country, R&B, Pop, Afrobeat, House, just to name a few, but no matter what that fusion is, I never forget to make it my expression. It allows me to create without placing limitations on what I do. I do predominantly Reggae, but I listen to and do a lot of different genres, that's why when you hear a Da'Ville song it does not matter what you're into, you'll always be able to find something to relate to in my music.

RFG: What countries & festivals have you performed in?
Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, all over the USA, Canada, Solomon Islands, Luxembourg, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, UK, Belgium, Jamaica, St. Martin, Anguilla, French Guiana, Grenada, Guyana, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Bermuda, Dominica, Cayman Island, St. Kitts, throughout the Bahamas Island, and Belize just to name a few.

RFG: What do you have in the works for the rest of 2022?
So far 2022 is looking very promising. It's been a very busy year for me, and the bookings have been consistent. I have quite a few confirmed dates that will see me performing at festivals on different continents. Australia, USA, Canada, and some islands in the Caribbean; others still pending. Apart from that I'm busy releasing new material with the intention of releasing one of my four albums already completed before the year ends.

Black Uhuru quickly rose to great popularity and fame worldwide in the wake of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. One of roots-reggae’s distinct voices, Mykal Rose helped define the Waterhouse sound. His lead vocals can be heard on Black Uhuru hits such as Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Shine Eye Gal, Plastic Smile, What is Life and General Penitentiary. Mykal was the lead singer on Anthem, the Black Uhuru album backed by Sly and Robbie that won the first reggae Grammy in 1984. As a solo artist, with Black Uhuru, and back as a solo artist, Mykal has maintained consistent success throughout the years. June, July 2019 he completed a five week tour that spanned the US headlining five festivals backed by Sly Dunbar & Lloyd Parks. Prior to that tour, Mykal with Sly & Robbie headlined the Jamrock Reggae Cruise.

Mykal Rose made a flying start to 2022 with a song called 'Glory to Jah' which he recorded for an independent American label called Big Feet Records. 'Glory to Jah' was number one on the Foundation Radio Network Chart in New York for over 3 weeks. Mykal also topped the charts in Jamaica in 2007, with ShootOut (Police and Thieves) produced by John John Records.

In the last ten years Mykal has been unusually prolific.  His latest studio album release is called Ska Ska Ska (2019). This album received much acclaim worldwide. Along with the album there is a video release called Everybody Gone Ska. The album release that came out before that is called Healing of the Nations (2018). This project was produced in California. The album before that is called Strategy of Rome (2017). This album was produced in Europe. Before that he released Rasta State in 2016. Also released in 2016 was the album Sidewalk Steppa produced by Foreign Key Records in the US. A single of Sidewalk Steppa was also released at the same time. Mykal also put out a popular single in collaboration with Melloquence and Cutty Ranks called Hot Water. Hot Water was produced by Pascal who is based in Germany. He released a single collaboration with Al Barose called Want the Herb.

Worldwide, Mykal Rose is a household name. He continues to headline many of the best reggae festivals in the world and he has been touring North America and Europe steadily. Mykal is an exceptionally talented vocalist and performer. He has an original style and sound that was quickly embraced by fans and music lovers. Mykal is the favored voice of Black Uhuru, with his Waterhouse slurs, effective songwriting, militant dancing and vocals.

DRE ISLAND ANNOUNCES SOPHOMORE ALBUM HIGH TIMES
The multi-talented Jamaican artist Dre Island sets course to elevate mind, body, and soul on his upcoming sophomore album High Times, via DubShot Records. Following his 2020 debut Now I Rise, the eight-track LP is a steady burn through life’s most precious moments.

The album is available:
https://ingrv.es/high-times-ao2-5

The singer, songwriter and producer unleashes the album’s new carefree bop “All Night” feat. Carlio. In its accompanying video (directed by 300k), Dre and Carlio reach euphoric heights with their love interests as they galavant through a magical forest ride.

“ ‘All Night’ is about good times and vibes with your loved ones, friends and family, especially coming out of this restricted time frame because of the pandemic. Now we can go back out in the night and party from 10pm until 6am,” Dre Island proclaims.

Watch “All Night” video: https://youtu.be/cCmEBQzpbSk

Dre Island continues to enhance his high, whether it is through love or cannabis, in this nuanced song collection. The album’s title track featuring dancehall prodigy Skillibeng is a straightforward celebration of simple pleasures—papers and good kush—paired to the sounds of swirling key chords and a thick trap bassline produced by Jafrass.

As the album progresses, Dre Island shifts to the upbeat tempo of contemporary tropical dance music on “High With You,” a classic tongue-in-cheek weed anthem alluding that the plant is a close friend. A video for “High With You” is set to be released with the album. “Take Me High” is a slower, more contemplative ode to ganja that reworks Louis Armstrong’s lyrics about “trees of green” into the more smokeable type. Roots reggae legend Richie Spice links up with Dre Island on “High Grade Smoke,” produced by Jamie Roberts. “With a vision so clear, meditation pure, so don’t partake if you’re not really sure,” flows Dre Island as he extols the virtues of the herb, capping it off with a warning label for responsible use only. Other producers on High Times include Kushface, Green Lion Crew, Che Big 12, Zimi, TJ Records and Tac Dem.

Dre explains in greater detail the inspiration behind the album: "It's about living life to the best of its ability, ya nuh, appreciating nature in its purest form. Where the herbs, marijuana is concerned, that is the first inspiration that led me to the whole thought of the album High Times. Just appreciating yourself as a person, as a human being. Just note to self, motivate yourself and stay in that high moment with that high energy with that high soul...each of the 8 tracks speaks individually to different moments of being high, or getting high, or living high...Every single one of the 8 tracks are about MARIJUANA, nothing else but MARIJUANA."

Dre Island’s High Times Summer Tour will pull up to select cities throughout July and August. Dates to be announced at a later date.
