The ever-personable Tab Benoit enjoys a cigar after his set at the 2022 Blues From The Top in Winter Park, Colorado.

Between Louisiana native Tab Benoit's downhome, humorous banter and the combo of his mighty potent swamp, soul, and Chicago blues, he and his power trio are a force to be reckoned with.

Benoit is also founder of his Whiskey Bayou record label and the founder and driving force behind Voice of the Wetlands, a nonprofit organization working to preserve the coastal waters of his home state.

Bukka White Blues Festival Oct 8 honors native son
(ABERDEEN, MS) - Saturday, October 8th at the Lock And Dam Road Blue Bluff Recreation Area in Aberdeen, Mississippi is the Bukka White Blues Festival.

Kicking off the live music at 12pm is the Kevin Waide Project, followed by Stormy, Alvis Hatch & Peoples Praise Band, Queen Ireta & Blues Band Revue, Crossroads Band, Sean Bad Apple, Lady Trucker, R.L. Boyce, and Honey Bee.

Activities include food trucks, kayak rentals, inflatables, the SCA Steak Cook Off, Ribs on the River, Southern Best Catfish Tournament, G & J Petting Zoo, Animalogy with Bob Tarter, and face painting.

The festival was recently named a “Best of Mississippi Travel Attraction” by Mississippi Magazine.

Aberdeen native son and Delta blues legend Booker White (aka Bukka White) had a huge voice and a thick, penetrating rhythmic style on the National guitar and piano — a presence like no other. In his colorful past, he had played baseball in the Negro Leagues, was a Golden Gloves boxer, and did time at Parchman Farm.

The Bukka White Blues Festival features blues legends and emerging talent alike over Columbus Day Weekend, each October. The festival honors Aberdeen’s bluesman, Bukka White, famous for his original song, “Aberdeen Blues.” Booker “Bukka” White is featured on Mississippi Blues Trail Marker located in Aberdeen.

Consisting of five stages (including the levee-top amphitheater “Main Stage”), a wide variety of buskers (street musicians), supplementary events (including the Flour Power 5k Run, the Tour da Delta bicycle race, and a Kansas City sanctioned BBQ Contest), food and arts/crafts vendors galore, and one-of-a-kind shopping in the eclectic shops and boutiques of historic downtown Helena, there is truly something for everyone.

The unbelievable lineup this year includes The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bobby Rush, Mavis Staples, The Devon Allman Project with Larry McCray and Jimmy Hall. You need to click through here to see the 80+ acts appearing over the 4 day event.

Jim Dan Dee :: REAL BLUES
Canadian bands have long held onto a more muscular Midwestern aesthetic when it comes to straight ahead blues & rock. Toronto-based quartet, Jim Dan Dee, carries that spirit forward picking up the torch of groups like Foghat, Pat Travers, Rory Gallagher, George Thorogood, and Canned Heat to name a few, who reimagined the works of the original blues pioneers into a heavier, riff-oriented sound and feel.

Led by the group’s namesake, Jim "Dan Dee" Stefanuk (Steff-an-uk), whose soulful baritone voice and gritty vintage guitar tone blaze the trail while the rock-solid rhythm section of drummer Shawn “Stix” Royal and Dwayne “Gameshow” Lau (La-ow) on bass, drive the bus, and the energetic saxophone of Jason “Bobby” Sewerynek (Sue-war-neck) weaves in and out of the melody and the guitar lines adding spice and dynamic support to the sizzling song selection.

The band’s sophomore full-length album, Real Blues, is a selection of ten new originals and a heartfelt cover of a blues classic. Eddie Jones, better known as Guitar Slim, was a New Orleans blues guitarist best known for writing "The Things That I Used to Do,” which Stefanuk and the band take quite seriously while paying tribute to the late great master with the opening cover.

A fun-loving dance floor swinger follows, then a deep dive into the emotional landscape of melancholy, loss, and despair, a New Orleans street beat stirs into a fiery gumbo groover, followed by a slinky blues grinder, a rock ‘n’ roll retro radio vibe, then a Delaware Destroyers styled rocker, a brooding Seattle-style acid rock, some bump and grind blues, inventive swing showing off the tandem assault of guitar and sax, and then wrapping with a swampy boogie.

Just in Case: September 19 is "National Women Road Warrior Day." This brought to mind touring blues women. Now it may sound glamourous but touring has it's challenges and certainly for women as well. Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, Bessie Smith (whom Ma took under her wing), started out with traveling minstrel shows. "During the decade of the 1920s, it was the women singers that dominated the early blues recordings. Many or them came from the black vaudeville houses that provided employment for these artists. Another source of exposure for their talents was with the Theater Owner’s Booking Association (T.O.B.A.) where they would perform on stage in small towns and metropolitan cities throughout the country." writes MojoHand. "They traveled from state to state with the “Medicine Show” or the vaudeville circuit, spreading the blues to the public." They paved the road for the countless blues women road warriors touring today.
