Birthplace of the blues? It's Louisiana, say scholar Michael White, guitarist-author Chris Thomas King
The jazz clarinetist and blues-based guitarist team up for a provocative presentation at Xavier University Oct 16th.

By Keith Spera/Nola.com
(NEW ORLEANS, LA) - Is Mississippi’s longstanding claim as the birthplace of the blues a myth?

Years of independent research by Xavier University professor and jazz clarinetist Michael White and blues-based guitarist, singer, actor and author Chris Thomas King led to the same conclusion: the blues more likely originated in Louisiana, more specifically New Orleans.

They had intended to present their provocative findings at Xavier in March 2020, only to be cancelled at the last minute by the COVID shutdown.
Two-and-a-half years later, they’ll try again.

Their “New Orleans, Home of the Blues,” a joint presentation that is part discussion, part concert, is rescheduled for Sunday [Oct 16] at 3pm in the third-floor McCaffrey Ballroom in the Xavier University Center [New Orleans, Louisiana].

The latest installment of White’s long-running “Culture of New Orleans” lecture series at Xavier, the event will also include performances by King, vocalist Topsy Chapman and White’s Original Liberty Jazz Band. Admission is free and open to the public.

That their rescheduled program falls on the final day of this weekend’s free Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival downtown in Lafayette Square – which, in its own way, also makes the case for New Orleans being a blues town – is appropriate. …continue reading here   (Photo: Sophia Germer)

Emma Wilson :: WISH HER WELL
When Emma Wilson burst onto the British blues scene, she took the UK by storm with her vibrant and visceral live performances. Emma is  the 2022 winner of the UK Blues Awards “Emerging Artist of the Year.” Emma's much anticipated studio album, Wish Her Well, was recorded live, true to tradition, creating a rich beautiful band feel with Emma's truly sensational voice being the main feature.

The album is 10 original songs dealing with love, death, lust, rejection, empowerment and simple painful heartbreak. The music on the record spans blues, northern soul, rock and gospel.

Emma‛s influences include Ann Peebles, Aretha, Mavis Staples, Little Feat, and Robert Cray. However, this is Emma's own record, referencing her influences brilliantly while maintaining her own unique sound. Emma achieved this by bringing together some of the UKs most elite musicians, including drummer Mat Hector (Iggy Pop), bassist Mark Neary (Noel Gallagher), and guitarist Adam Chetwood (Mark Ronson, Imelda May).

Just in Case: Just in case: October 15, 2022 is "Universal Music Day." Music is one of the most creative and universal ways to express ideas, emotions, and opinions; making it an integral part of every single culture around the world. Even in the womb, music made it's mark on our minds and bodies. Obviously, we can imagine that one of the earliest forms of music, besides the voice, was drum-based and percussion instruments fashioned from rocks and sticks. It's said the lyre, the prototype to the guitar, was first invented in 1500 B.C. by the Hitties, an ancient group of Indo-Europeans, who used frets to change the pitch of a vibrating string!

Expressing yourself via music, whether your own "voice" or others' voice, is an essential part of life. Music makes the world go round indeed.
