|
Summer Love Festival has announced its line-up for next year, including DJ David Rodigan and singer Dawn Penn.
The one-day reggae festival takes place at Mote Park in Maidstone on Saturday, May 27.
You can book your 2023 tickets here.
The full line-up is still yet to be revealed, but artists announced so far include Desmond Dekker’s Aces, now fronted by singer and Dekker’s long-time friend Delroy Williams, Gentleman’s Dub Club and Maxi Priest, as well as David Rodigan and Dawn Penn.
The festival will also boast street food from all over the world, including the return of its Jerk food stalls, the beer, cider and ale village and the Summer Love rum punch.
There will also be funfair rides and family activities for those who plan to take the kids along.

Concerts confirmed for next year, in addition to the Summer Love Festival, include Revival Festival, which celebrates the music of the ‘90s and ‘00s, and Rock the Mote, the biggest tribute festival in the county.

Inezi’s "Jungle" a Call for Understanding and Compassion
|
On his new single, JUNGLE, roots-reggae & soul singer Inezi sought to evoke feelings on matters of low socio-economic issues that affect the lives and livelihood of the common man. When asked what inspired him to write the song Inezi told NIPnews, "this song is actually some people's reality, some people's life, constantly feeling like it's a jungle type or alien battlefield."
Throughout his career, Inezi has been an advocate for the Right understanding, the highest wisdom which sees the Ultimate Reality. His opinion in this regard is centered around issues that are often misunderstood or misinterpreted on recordings such as No Love, Straight Away, Same, African Proverbs, Sorry Fah, Refuse To Be You, Roots and Culture and he continues to add his voice to these causes because "no matter what some people do they just can't figure nothing out. They spend their lives constantly running like it's their only purpose, constantly fighting a battle non-stop and that's like normal. When you live like that it becomes normalized, he said. It's like this place but not this place. That is the whole concept of Jungle, it actually speaks for itself, and this is what I would like those who are able to navigate their own lives successfully to understand."
"Jungle" is the first track from Global Beat Studios' upcoming Inna Dis Yah compilation album. According to the label's manager, "this rhythm inspired the first two artists who heard and vibe it to come up with "Inna Dis Yah" theme, so it became the official name. "Jungle" is the first of seven (7) tracks of the rhythm which is due for release by end of January 2023. Of this upcoming project, Global Beat Studios' sneak peek on what to expect is, "interesting recordings of social commentary musically stated from a generic and completely natural place" and intriguingly, by an interesting assembling of an influential and inspiring line-up of internationally known and emerging reggae entertainers."
Major streaming services such as Spotify encourage artists to build catalogues; Inezi's growing catalogue of tuneful music, exuberating textured melodies and timeless lyrics have now reached a wider audience across the platform for the first time. Spotify Wrapped 2022 analysis reveals his music is now being heard in 165 countries, with a 999% increase in listeners and 996% in streams. His rapidly growing fans are described as "adventurers" seekers of sound, fresh artists, deep cuts, and new tracks. "Jungle" now available on all digital platforms is complemented by a music video also out now on YouTube, directed by Khemis Vybz Nation. Go To SPOTIFY.COM and download/stream Jungle, to support Inezi's quest to bring about an understanding of some of the causes and effects of those who are crippled by their way of living and adopted hopelessness from generation to generation.
"trying to escape reality seh dem sick in it wizard and witches in it and very rich in it, genetically cloning it, like a dog with no bone in it...Jungle!"

Toots Hibbert’s Daughter Leba Hibbert, New Lead Singer Of Toots & The Maytals
|
Leba Hibbert has taken the reigns from her late father, Toots Hibbert, and has been named the new lead singer of the famous reggae band. Leba is a reggae artist who is closely associated with the band and who is said to have recorded duets with her father before his passing.
The late two-time Grammy Award winner, Toots Hibbert, passed away in September 2020 at the University of the West Indies, Mona, in Kingston. He was 80 years old at the time but had remained a singer and songwriter, and lead vocalist for the ska and reggae band for more than six decades.
Leba’s lead singer role was announced by D&F Production company which managed the late musician’s music ventures. In a statement, Leba spoke about the “Do the Reggay” artist’s life and work and carrying on the band’s name and influence as one of the few remaining ska bands in the world.
“My father is loved and respected all over the world as one of reggae’s greatest icons. Through hard work and dedication to his craft, he created one of the greatest legacies in reggae music and we are totally dedicated to keeping this legacy alive,” she said.
The revamped Toots and the Maytals will go on their first tour across the United States in February-April, 2023 before heading on a month-long United Kingdom tour.
“As you can imagine, all the band members are very excited about going on the road and performing for my father’s fans in the US and the UK,” Leba said before adding that the band’s sets will include music from her father, including an upcoming tribute album.
“It will feature new versions of some of my father’s greatest hits. The album will also feature a few duets that we recorded together. We haven’t chosen a title or a release date for the album yet, but as soon we do we’ll make an announcement,” she said.
Toots Hibbert is recognized as the founder for the name of the Reggae genre after his song “Do The Reggay” was released. The beloved band earned its first Grammy in 2005 for True Love.

Jamaicans take the spotlight in Amazon drama series - RICHES
|
Music from late Reggae legend Bob Marley, Lila Ike, and Stefflon Don is featured in the newly released Amazon drama series, Riches.
Lila Ike’s song Solitude from her 2020 album the ExPerience is featured on the soundtrack of Season 1 in episode 2. At the 14 minute 40 seconds mark, a snippet of Lila’s Solitude sets the tone.
Episode 4 of Season 1 features an instrumentation of Bob Marley’s 1980 hit, Redemption Song, while Stefflon Don’s title track from her 2020 album Move is featured in another scene.
The new Prime drama series centers on the fortunes of Flair & Glory, a UK-based cosmetics company that prides itself on being one of the beauty industry’s premiere businesses, Black-owned or otherwise. Yet, when the man at the top of that pyramid falls, it’s up to the rest of the family to fill the void he left behind.

The Seal Of My Soul - A Collection of Poems by General Smiley

General Smiley has compiled his poetry in a book called THE SEAT OF MY SOUL.

Checking in with General Smiley: Right after I graduated high school I volunteered to do the national youth service as a teacher, teaching in a service called ”into the light “ or “ Jamal “ this was an adult learning program then so I was teaching adults some of the subjects I learned in high school. I was doing this for a while before I realized the restrictions of the curriculum, I found out that there was not much I could expand on because of the time given to do so and I felt frustrated and clustered inside because there were so much more I wanted to say and that was when I started jotting down the way I felt and some things I wanted to say. When I go home in the evenings I would think a lot about what I wanted to say to the people but can’t. I kept this inside for two years, the time required to fulfill that voluntary services but just before my time was up the ministry of education sent me an invitation to attend teacher’s college tuition-free but I turned it down and went on to study bookkeeping and accounting instead at the Jamaica Commercial Institute, so while going to school I formed a club so we could promote social events inside the school among the classes and that was when I started reciting some of the poems I was writing as lyrics to songs. Ultimately after years of writing and performing some of these writings and the encouragement of some of my producers and life on a whole keep changing I decided to publish this poetry to share with the world my more that I’ve always wanted and still do want to say.

New Zealand: Kiwi reggae band has life-serving inmates rocking for Christmas concert
|
Rival gangs put aside their differences when Kiwi reggae band Three Houses Down performed a concert for the inmates at Wiri Prison.
The band announced on their Facebook page, that performing inside the high-security Auckland South Corrections Facility was the best ever.
“We’re beyond blessed to do this music ting! We’ve travelled the world through music, but playing at Wiri prison was by far the best experience EVER!,” the band wrote.
“Big up to the organisers for making this happen. After the concert, we mingled with the inmates, had some good chats. The concert was uplifting and gave hope to the bros. There were lifers in there who’ve never been to a concert, ever. "
The band said despite the inmates being a captive audience, it was an honour to be asked to perform in the prison.
“Honestly, If you wanna test your front man skills, try performing to inmates. The vibe was unreal. We had them on their feet, singing and dancing! It was more of an emotional reward for us knowing that we’ve made their year/christmas.
An online fan said the concert united the inmates. “Was with one of the officers today and he said he never seen da crips and bloods together and was emotional for him to see that happen . He said it was a vibe, you guys just made history.”

Sizzla Kalonji Burns Platinum Plaque He Received From DJ Khaled Over Alleged “Insult”
|
Sizzla feels as if DJ Khaled insulted him.
It seems like DJ Khaled’s made an enemy out of his former collaborator, reggae superstar Sizzla Kalonji.
Sizzla and DJ Khaled connected in the past, largely on Khaled’s recent projects such as Grateful, Father Of Asahd, and God Did. He handled the intro on Grateful. Then, he linked up with Mavado, 070 Shake, and Buju Banton on Father Of Asahd. Sizzla also delivered a stunning performance alongside Bouty Killer, Skillibeng, Capleton and Buju Banton on “TSKNM” off of God Did.
It seems that the working relationship between Khaled and Sizzla is no more, despite their successes together. This morning, the reggae star shared a video of himself burning several platinum plaques from his collaborations alongside the Miami-based DJ. The video shows him removing the platinum discs, and the photos of Khaled’s kids from the album art, before setting flames to the plaques. “You insult me, DJ Khaled,” he’s heard saying over the video. “Cut out the baby picture. The baby’s innocent. At this point, Sizzla sets all of the plaques on fire together.
The root of the issue appears to stem from Khaled’s approach to bringing dancehall sounds on his album. However, some also believe that Sizzla felt disrespected by the size of his name on the plaque.
In the video, he claims that Khaled insulted Jamaica and dancehall culture. However, he did say that he wanted the pictures of Asahd and Aalam Khaled, who he called his God kids.
So far, we haven’t heard anything from DJ Khaled on the matter. However, his ties to Jamaica’s dancehall scene have been documented over the years. On his latest albums, Sizzla’s presence specifically helped bring authentic reggae and dancehall sounds to DJ Khaled’s project.
During an interview with Grammy.com in 2021, DJ Khaled explained how Jamaican artists played a huge role in his career.
“All those artists you saw on my album on that song, my friends that cosigned me in the beginning of my career. They use to give me dubplates and they put their hands around my shoulder saying we love this kid and I never forget where I come from,” he said. “Dancehall is a part of my story, you know what I’m saying, Jamaica is a part of Khaled’s story and it’s such a blessing… I love Reggae music and I love Dancehall.”
