A North Port (Fla.) man was in for a surprise when he purchased a Civil War musket on an online auction. John Pisano purchased a Springfield 1861 model that was manufactured in Connecticut in 1863 at the Colt Manufacturing Company.

The gun belonged to a soldier in the state of New Jersey. When Pisano received the gun, he found out that the gun was ready to fire. “It could’ve gone off and killed somebody and I guess that person would’ve been a victim of the Civil War had it gone off,” said Pisano.

Pisano took the weapon to a local gunsmith who helped him safely remove the charge without the gun firing. Jim Morrison, owner of J.M. Gun Repair, told the paper that it appeared as if the load was from the 1860s due to its condition. “It’s just unbelievable, it’s just awesome to bring back this soldier who loaded this rifle, he loaded this rifle to shoot in battle," said Pisano. "He never would have imagined that it would be unloaded 160 years later.”

A Utah man has learned the hard way not to get too close to bison. Kyler Bourgeous, 30, was gored by a bison during a hike in Antelope Island State Park in June suffering a cracked rib and collapsed lung. Believing his misfortune was “just a freak accident.” Bourgeous recently returned to the park with a date, Kayleigh Davis, to jog and watch the sunset. But a bison charged and gored her too, puncturing her thigh. “I generally am not superstitious” said Bourgeous, “but I have this weird feeling that the bison there really do not like me.”

A brigade of eight firefighters needed 25 minutes to free a chubby rat that had gotten stuck in a manhole cover. Two children in Germany discovered the portly critter and phoned for help. “The rat had quite a lot of winter fat and got stuck at his hips,” said rescuer Michael Sehr. Animal control’s Andrea Steinbach said that as the rat was freed, it “it took a small look back,” so if to say ”thank you very much, and yes, I know I have to diet.”

Too many text messages? Well, we have a solution...

A Chinese computer programmer created a chatbot that sent realistic responses to his girlfriend’s daily barrage of 300 texts. Li Kixiang said he developed the program to avoid hurting his girlfriend’s feelings while he was at work. But the girlfriend became suspicious when the responses to her texts came back nearly instantly. “Why are you responding so fast?” she asked. After revealing his ruse on social media, Li was inundated with requests from other men for the source code to his bot.

Although we acknowledge the importance of manuals, particularly rare old ones, in a way, we are sorry so many of the best sellers are manuals. We offer thousands of really terrific catalogs, both merchant and maker catalogs, that we would expect owners of old firearms would want to have with their guns. They are all period pieces that offer a wonderful comprehensive view of what people were buying at the time the catalogs were printed. Just a few of our favorites are:

ranHello, Cornellpubs: I have an interest in several of your replica publications. Do you offer any quantity discounts and combined shipping? Thank you. Best, jpw (eBay)

Hello jpw, I'm sorry, we don't discount our publications, we try to keep the prices as low as we can. This is particularly true at eBay where we pay hefty commissions. We do try to help with postage- put items in the cart and request combined shipping and we will respond. We advertise about half of our publications on eBay. Rob for cornellpubs

Hello, Ma'am. I want to order items and have looked at your site and did not see a mention of using the special rates for media/printed matter. I see only USPS First Class. Normally this is quite expensive compared to say a 'book rate' for shipping to Alaska. (Sorry if you have this information listed, I did try to look everywhere, or thought I did). Do you, or will you ship using the special 'media' type USPS rates? I might have to order 1 item at a time, as I research what is missing from my 'library', or if I find more, then can order a couple of your fine publications at once. Thank you, Gary

Hello Gary, We only ship by the methods shown at the website because we have experienced slow and lost packages with Media Mail and the PO in its wisdom considers what we sell "advertising" and advertising is banned from media mail. Cheers, Rob

xxxNo, thank you, Sir. I can and will easily do without your 'publications' then. They are not a necessary item.  It's your right to lose business due to your own ignorance & lack of understanding as to why you don't dictate to a potential customer that he must pay more for shipping because YOU don't like certain methods and well, too bad. Quite a strange way to run a business to not only expect, to demand the customer to pay 4 to 10 times more in $$$ because you incorrectly generalize about a shipping method created to make is feasible, or economical . I have learned to avoid completely any place of business that starts off their reply with a negative and then state how they can't or aren't willing to do something that takes little to no effort on their part, then finishes their complaint with a 'whine' - this a place that doesn't need, nor deserve any of my hard earned dollars. No reply is needed, nor wanted. Gary

Hello Gary, I'm sorry you don't understand rules beyond our control, lost packages and lost time hurt a small business, but it is good to know before we did business with you. Cheers, Rob

(Rob) First, quit with the bullshit and whining.  I shipped professionally for a lifetime.  I have shipped items for over 40yrs. and never once whined, or complained to the customer about business problems big or small. Second, you need to learn to LISTEN.  You don't know how to do that. What did I write at the end of my email? Yes, you ignored that completely.  Why?  Because YOU are only interested in complaining, you are not interested in any solution, or actually listening.  It is "good to know" that you are basically a whiner and complainer, not a solver and not a can do person. Lastly ***No reply is wanted or needed***.  (I have blocked you, not only due to your extreme poverty of intellect, but also because of your severe lack of comprehension skills -  in regards to the English language.  Regrettably you are most quite unable to fully grasp the relative simplicity of the aforementioned statement:  "No reply is wanted or needed".   I am not and have not been interested in anything further that you have to say). Gary

It went on from there as Gary became more and more agitated... gosh I didn't think I was that stupid! RM

Letters From Readers

Dear Abby – I need to complain, I guess.  My chief complaint is that I have to read all these other complaints from folks who either can’t read right, or at all, or just complain without offering you a chance to fix things.  I’m going to state right up front that every single order I’ve placed with you has been correct, speedy, and I love the new instant-PDF capability.  So let me complain about your great service and business model.  And don’t ever give me great service again, or I’ll have to complain again!!! Jim

stesteStevens 1897 Arms Catalog    Dear Mr. Magnuson, Rob and I work hard during our retirement to provide period correct information about firearms to collectors and enthusiasts. I see you gave us neutral feedback with what appears to be a satisfactory comment, "Looks, ok". We don’t have much advertising budget so we rely on the goodwill of customers to make ends meet. A neutral feedback lasts an entire year and is damaging to our reputation. It also, unfortunately, just encourages others to “pile on” so I’d like to ask you if you would agree to revise your feedback to positive. Please let me know, Best, Abby (He did revise the feedback, thanks, Abby)

breBreechloading Shotguns 1860-1940 Vol. I A-F    clifus-0 (eBay): THE book did not have info I wanted for EM REILLY gun co

You bought the wrong volume. Makers are listed under the last name, not the initials (which some people might not know.) So, it is in the third volume, not the first that lists EM Reilly. Also, there is an index of each volume listing the contents. Anyway, please don't return it, the eBay return postage is more than the cost to make the book in the first place. We print to order, we don't maintain a stock of the 6000 old publications we offer, we would just throw it out. Abby for cornellpubs

xxI am looking for a parts list and scematic for subject gun or the Iver Johnson single shot. If you have something please quote price to zip 62265 Thank You Larry

Hi Larry,  Champions were made over many years by Iver. The parts diagrams tended to be flat images of the parts, a good one is the 1917 parts catalog. Now, "exploded parts views" were not generally used until after WWII and by some makers, much later. Iver Johnson didn't use them for legacy guns at all so the best we can offer is the 1958 parts catalog which has a nice cutaway drawing showing internal parts. I would get both, with them you should be able to take down and reassemble the gun with no problem. Cheers, Rob

Good morning, Abby, From Germany. I am a gun collector and scribe from the Eastern banks of the Big Pond so to speak. Currently, I am researching the Texas made Dance Dragoon revolver of Civil War fame. In this connections I “found” Flem Rogers, an author of yours and one of his subject papers. In this paper I discovered meausrements of the length of the frame, namely between 83 to 85 mm, but unfortunately, no measurements of the length of the cylinder. I like to ask him if he can help my research by providing the exact length of an original Dance Dragoon cylinder in inch or millimeters, without safety pins of ratchets, please. Thanks a lot for passing this message on to Mr. Rogers and best regards, Wolf

Hi Rob, Trying to order some more Stevens reprints - but I can't get the site to let me finish checking out.  Got all my data entered, but can't get past that to the payments page.  I'm suspecting that some default in the site is not compatible with my antediluvian XT-Pro operating system or maybe the old Firefox version I'm still running.  Below are the order details. Previous iteration, you were able to send me an invoice, and I paid from that.  Can you do that again?   Thanks! Phil

Hi Phil, Websites are like handfuls of sand. We fix one thing and another thing falls off. The old site wasn't compatible with phones and Google Search dinged us for that, we went to the bottom of the list for searches using Google. The new site, perversely, doesn't like old operating systems and it doesn't look as if we will be able to fix that and still be phone compatible. So, if you want anything, just shoot us an email and we will send you a bill, just as you did. Cheers, Happy New Year, Rob

remHi Abby, Back after a long delay I hope all is well with you and yours. Saw a manual for the Remington Rolling Block Navy 1870 on Gun Broker but am unable to find it in your listings. Are you out of stock? If not please bill me in an E-Mail and I will save you the payment to them. Happy New Year from frozen PA. I still lust after that brake you published in your newsletter. I keep checking my drive way but no joy. Best regards, Stu

The third time was the charm! You might want to put a large warning about adblockers on the Download page for us Oldguys. I forgot one could effect downloads. I'm glad you're doing PDFs now. Zeiss (Ger) Rifle Telescopes 1921-1926  milezero (eBay): Do you have photos that actually show the quality of the reproduction? The photo provided is so small and grainy not much can be determined from it. Thanks.

Dear Mile, We are just to busy this time of year to try to figure out how to send you images through ebay, suffice to say they are not good so I recommend you not buy the catalog if you are looking for detail from the images. Also shipping to Canada is extremely expensive. We do sell pdfs at the website, perhaps that is a better solution. Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs

Thanks for yours. Are the PDFs you sell through your website of better quality then?

No, the pdfs are exactly the same. I should mention the text is great, it is just the images that lack detail, click on the image here to see what a page looks like. The cover and an inside page are shown. The pdfs are inexpensive, try one of those. Rob for cornellpubs

rareivy (eBay): Hi, I tried to buy six Ross catalogues from your ebay store. when I went to check out it said you would not deliver to my location. It also did not give me a total on combined shipping. How do we proceed? What is going to be the cost to ship to my location? I`m at Ontario Canada P0X1C0 Regards, Alex

Hi Alex, this is more complicated than you thought. Ebay shipping allows only one item at a time to be bought for international shipment. So you can't combine shipping and it xxxcosts a fortune. We don't ship internationally through our website because most countries, Canada included, want us to collect import duty, taxes, etc. for them and remit reports and money, something we just can't do. Your least expensive option is to buy PDF versions from our website and print them yourself. Sorry for not being more helpful. Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs

Vapen Depoten 1947, Falun, Sweden    henrik365 (eBay): Hello, I must inform you that paying a full shipping fee for each item is out of the question for me. Respectfully, -Henrik

Hello Henrik, I understand and I am sorry eBay insists on shipping items individually and does not combine shipping. May I suggest you try our website where you will find PDF versions of all our historic reprints? You could have your selections printed locally. I hope that helps. Best wishes, Rob for cornellpubs
