A Note from a BFG reader and cigar box guitar builder...
So happy to have the [Blues Festival] Guide and even happier to see a cigar box guitar in the hands of the lovely Tullie Brae. As a builder of cigar box instruments and who tries to teach the history of music through its roots in the blues and building homemade guitars (including to middle schoolers), it made my day to see one on the cover.

It’s awesome that folks like Samantha Fish, Rev. Peyton, Ghalia Volt and Tullie are keeping these instruments (and their relation to blues history) alive. Thanks for putting one on the cover!

One of my highlights this [past] year was having one of my 15-year-old neighbors ask me to teach him how to build his own – he did 98% of the work – I did a couple cuts on the band saw and drilled the tuner holes – he did everything else including soldering and wood burning his own art work.

If folks are interested in checking out my work, I can be found on Facebook and YouTube as Revvy Tone Modern/Primitive Instruments.

Sincerely,
Michael “Revvy” Copado

Pinetop Perkins Foundation 14th Annual Workshop Experience 2023 Registration Now Open
(CLARKSDALE, MS) – The Pinetop Perkins Foundation 14th Annual Workshop Experience 2023 registration is now open. Workshops are open to the young and young at heart — adults welcome!

Scholarships are available for ages 12 to 21 years. Masterclasses in Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Harmonica, Bass and Drums will be held June 13-16, 2023 at Hopson Plantation and Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

For piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, drums and harmonica, professional Blues musicians will present the music and techniques for playing it. Everyone needs to already have a basic knowledge of their instrument. Sorry, no beginning students allowed. Any musician who has been playing seriously for a year or so should be able to make a lot of progress in his or her Blues playing. The program requires at least two years-experience for piano workshop participants and advanced level experience for acoustic guitar.

This year they are introducing a new workshop - Acoustic Guitar with Doug MacLeod. This workshop is for advanced players who want to dig into the acoustic roots of the blues and beyond. (This is not a roll-over if the Electric Guitar slots fill up...just to clarify).

Charlie Musselwhite honored with Charles Cros Academy Grand Prix Blues Award
On December 15, 2022, blues icon Charlie Musselwhite was honored with the coveted Charles Cros Academy Grand Prix Blues Award for his Grammy Award-nominated Alligator Records album, Mississippi Son. The Grand Prix Awards for Jazz, Blues and Soul Favorites were announced on France Musique (French national radio) on Alex Dutilh's Open Jazz show.

Vintage Guitar magazine recently reviewed Mississippi Son, calling Musselwhite a "beloved blues harp great" with "formidable guitar chops" who, on the new album, "transports" the listener "straight to the Delta."

Charlie Musselwhite doesn’t just sing and play the blues; he is, in every sense of the word, a bluesman. Growing up, he not only learned the music first-hand from many of the genre’s most influential artists, he also absorbed the lifestyle.  “It’s an attitude... a way of living life,” Musselwhite says of playing the blues.

Musselwhite's life story reads like a classic blues song: born in Mississippi, raised in Memphis and schooled on the South Side of Chicago. A groundbreaking recording artist since the 1960s, Musselwhite has never stopped creating trailblazing music while remaining firmly rooted in the blues.

Over the years, Charlie has released nearly 40 albums on a variety of labels, his exploratory recordings including straight blues but often mixing in elements of jazz, gospel, Tex-Mex, Cuban and other world musics.

Now, with Mississippi Son, Musselwhite has come full circle, returning home to Mississippi after decades in Memphis, Chicago, San Francisco and points in between. Amalgamating all he’s learned and absorbed throughout his years of worldwide touring, Musselwhite imparts sage wisdom in every song he writes, sings and performs. “Blues tells the truth in a world that’s full of lies,” he intones in 'Blues Gave Me A Ride,' at once telling his own story and plainly summing up the genre’s timelessness.

Tomislav Goluban :: 20 YEARS ON THE ROAD
One of the treasured benefits of traveling the world playing music is that you accumulate a wide circle of friends, like minded souls and collaborators on your journey. Croatian blues singer, songwriter and harmonica player, band leader, blues educator, radio DJ, festival organizer and recording artist, the inexhaustible Tomislav (Tomi) Goluban celebrates his two decades as a performer by bringing some of those friends together for his 14th studio album, 20 Years On The Road.

The music was recorded live in the studio using three different sets of musicians in Croatia and Austria along with eight international guest vocalists contributing to the originals from Goluban’s catalog, plus a new instrumental, one beloved cover and Goluban’s theme song. "This is my 'best of' album after 20 years in the business. I'm so pleased to have such tremendous guest singers, mainly from my Blue Heart/Nola Blue/Blind Raccoon family, with whom I've collaborated the last few years," says Goluban.

Guests include the Tobacco Road Blues Band, and singers Skylar Rogers, Malaya Blue, Ryan Donahue, Mark Cameron, Kelly Zirbes, Crooked Eye Tommy, Gregg “Mac Daddy” Martinez, and Teresa James.

Just in Case: January 10 is "Peculiar People Day," an opportunity to recognize and celebrate those who refuse to conform to the world’s idea of normal. It is always the people who are termed "peculiar" and "different," that set the world in motion because they live “out of the box.” They refuse to accept and live by the status quo and have the courage to do and be different.

Sounds like creative artists past and present! Gotta love it! Variety is the spice of life as they say!
