“Broken Hearts, Open Hearts & Trees”
Rev. Michael J S Carter

Belvie Rooks and Dedan Gills are the co-founders of Growing a Global Heart, a vision inspired to promote the planting of memorial trees to honor those forgotten souls of our past — from victims of urban violence, the Underground Railroad, and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Route in West Africa—as part of a process of collective healing and as a solution to climate change. Their motto is: “Healing the wounds of the past—in the present—while creating a sustainable future.” I'd like to use their story and philosophy to share their wisdom, passion, and commitment on this Dr. King Sunday.

No virtual RE
11:00 a.m. at UUCSV with Susan E. Hicks

In this week’s Faithful Journeys Ask Questions, we’ll hear a story about Clyde Tombaugh, a Unitarian Universalist who discovered Pluto, and talk about our fourth Principle, a free and responsible search for truth and meaning. Children will learn how our faith affirms us to ask questions, investigate the world and be open to new information, ideas, and truths (as Tombaugh would have done had he lived to see Pluto's 2006 "demotion" to dwarf planet status).

AT HOME: Tell your children about a time when you had to change what you believed to be true. Pay extra attention to times when your child asks
questions, shows curiosity or otherwise actively seeks to learn. Point out
instances of your child acting faithfully in a way that affirms or promotes a free and responsible search for truth and meaning — their own search, or others'. To read this lesson for yourself and more at home suggestions check out.

Looking for a story to share at home? Here’s the story of another Unitarian Astronomer, Maria Mitchell, - “What Ms Mitchell Saw”.

Adult RE

Our next Adult RE discussion will be on Michael Sandal’s Justice - Episode 6: Mind Your Motives. Please join Monday, January 16, 2023, from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. All are welcome and refreshments will be provided. These discussions may be postponed if weather/road conditions are a concern.

The Blessing Bags project has proven so successful with our children that I’d like to keep it going. If you have personal items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand warmers, granola bars, etc.) to donate to the RE blessing bags for the unhoused please bring them in and place them in the pink bucket in the
portico! Filled bags will be available near the coffee station for anyone who wants to distribute them. Thanks for your support.

“Social Justice in Action”
Hosted by Jim Carillon with Guest Speakers:
Katie Alexander, Fred Littleton & Annie Myers

Pisgah Legal Services provides pro-bono legal and social justice services throughout WNC. Two of their services are helping clients navigate Affordable Care Act Health Insurance enrollment and free tax preparation for lower income families. These comprise their new “Health & Economic Opportunity Programs.” HEOP Regional Director Katie Alexander, volunteer Fred Littleton and client Annie Myers will describe this social justice work in action. Come hear how area families are served and how you might get involved in these vital social justice efforts at Pisgah Legal. A potluck lunch follows this service.

New Americans - Update

Thank you to all of our members who have helped our New American family. They have now been here for a year and much progress has been made: Aziz recently received a promotion at work, which will help with their
increasing need to be self-sufficient as government programs phase down or out. He is learning to drive a manual transmission car—if you would like to assist with this venture, please let our coordinators know. We also would like to remind you of ongoing needs for Similac Advance Formula and Size 1 diapers for the newest family member. (You can bring these items to church for the women's group meeting on Thursday of this week or to service on Sunday). In addition, the family will need to vacate their current address at the end of April, so we need help finding a (preferably) 3 bedroom/2 bath rental home for them to share with friends.

Reach out to Katherine Tharp or Jane Carroll with help or questions.

Covenant Group Announcement

The new covenant group dealing with the 8th principle work to "dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions" is set to begin on Sunday, January, 2023 at 3:30 p.m. in Evelyn's Room at UUCSV. Our group utilizes the concepts and practices of author, Resmaa Menakem, who asks us to acknowledge and work to end the trauma of white body supremacy in ourselves and our culture. People who have signed up to
participate will receive the Covenant Group Guidelines along with first
session questions towards the end of this week. Due to a late cancellation, we still have room for one or two people in our small (maximum 8 people) committed group. If you have interest in becoming a member, please reach out before January 15, 2023 so that you can have the information you need to make this commitment. The group will meet the 2nd and 4th Sundays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. for a total of ten sessions ending on June 11, 2023.
