Conscious Discipline: Building Resilient Schools & Homes
CD logoConscious Discipline is a social‐emotional learning and classroom management approach. Developed by a teacher for teachers, the philosophy of Conscious Discipline emerged after years of working with children and experiencing the challenges of a broken system full of hurting children and frustrated adults. The methodology and best‐practices of Conscious Discipline offer a different – and proven – pathway to transformation.
 
Join colleagues for online discussions to reflect on the 10-lesson video series, Building Resilient Schools and Homes. The video series is lead by Dr. Becky Bailey, educator, author, and child development expert.

Cost (includes video access and online resources): Free for educators employed by school districts with an NCES full membership: SAUs 3, 9 (Jackson only), 23 (Haverhill only), 35, 36, 48 (Campton only), 58, 68, 77, & 84. Associate member districts: $50. Non-members $100 (space permitting).
 
For: PreK, elementary, and middle educators but please note that the video content is geared to the elementary grades. Staff from childcare and family-serving organizations are also welcome and pricing follows your local school district.
 
Professional Development Hours: For those who actively participate in the online discussions (with camera on), there will be 18 hours awarded--10 hours for watching the video lessons and 1 hour per online discussion participation. You must part in at least 6 of the online discussions to receive a certificate.

Conscious Discipline Community of Practice
Those who have engaged the video series, Building Resilient Homes and Classrooms by Conscious Discipline®, either though NCES or their school district, are invited to participate in a "community of practice" to further your understanding, reflect on your practice, or simply connect with other educators interested in delving deeper into the topic.
 
Anne-Marie Gagne, SEL Specialist and Behavior Interventionist for SAU 3, will serve as the facilitator for the group. 
 
The community is already underway but new participants are welcome to join. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30 PM via Zoom on February 7 and March 14, 2023.
 
This opportunity is only open to school districts that hold full or associate membership with NCES and is being offered at no charge. A professional development certificate will be issued in April to reflect your participation.

On April 8th, 2024, Northern New Hampshire will be in the path of totality for a solar eclipse!  NCES, WMSI, and other partners are gearing up for this rare natural phenomena. We want to share our excitement with you and your class. In this workshop, we will go over activities to prepare your students to understand and learn from this rare event!
 
For: Educators grades K-8

NH Drinking Water Festival for grades 3, 4 & 5

After a three-year hiatus, the New Hampshire Drinking Water Festival returns on May 10, 2023, in Keene, NH.  
 
The Festival also includes the New Hampshire State Water Science Fair and Water Poetry Contest. NH schools may participate in one or all events! At the Festival, fourth grade students will spend the day learning about water quality, conservation, pollution, wildlife and many other water-related topics. Activities are hands-on and students interact with professionals in fields of science, technology, engineering and math. These lessons are packed with opportunities to explore Next Generation Science Standards concepts!
 
For the state-level Water Science Fair, fourth graders will conduct research, create an exhibit, write a report and present their findings to a panel of judges. There are a variety of ways the school-level fair can be configured. Guide booklet available. We are happy to discuss ways your school can participate. The Festival and Water Science Fair are free to registered schools and will take place on May 10, 2023, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm in Keene, NH. Registration deadline: January 31, 2023. Space is limited.  
 
Students in third through fifth grades, home schooled and in traditional classes, may participate in the Water Poetry Contest. The theme this year is “Water Rising.” Submission deadline: March 31, 2023.

Under the Madness Magazine, a magazine for teen writers-by teen writers, is accepting submissions of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction for its first issue. The magazine's editorial board is composed of students largely from the North Country, working under the mentorship of the New Hampshire Poet Laureate. Under the Madness Magazine publishes writers, ages 13-19, from around the globe.
 
Under the Madness is made possible with the generous support of the Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. The magazine began as an off-shoot of the North Country Young Writers’ Festival.

The NH Charitable Foundation is now accepting applications for the Student Aid program. In order to qualify, a student just needs to live in NH and be pursuing some sort of post-secondary education. There is a single online application; in completing just one application a student is considered for all of the NHCF funds for which they are eligible.
 
Important dates to keep in mind:
  • Dependent bachelor’s candidates and all graduate students must apply by Friday, April 14 at 5:00 pm ET.
  • All other students (independent bachelor’s candidates, associate degree candidates, certificate candidates, students in an apprenticeship or licensing program, etc.) can apply on a rolling deadline through December 15 at 5:00 pm ET.
Each year, the NHCF awards more than $7 million in scholarships to help New Hampshire students with the fewest resources and most promise realize their educational goals, whether it’s a two- or four-year college degree, certificate, or professional license.
 
To complete your online application, you will need:
  • Electronic copy of FAFSA filing
  • Electronic copy of high school transcript
  • Email addresses for individuals who agree to write a letter of recommendation

Community Builders Hub:
Seeking Three Full-Time Community Stewards
Community Builders Hub webpage

The Community Builders Hub is hiring three, full-time, paid staff members as Community Stewards to support local community building efforts. The Stewards will focus their work in three sub-regions: Colebrook/Canaan, Lancaster/Whitefield/Littleton, and Gorham/Berlin. 

Community Stewards will work as well-connected community organizers and change agents. They will build trusting relationships with community members from a wide range of backgrounds, including town officials, educators, seniors, non-profit employees, youth, and business owners. Stewards will listen for the issues and ideas that matter to the people in the communities they are serving and help community partners connect with one another, gather resources, and address local priorities together. 

The three Stewards will work as a team, and with representatives of the Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund, to help local people strengthen the skills and relationships needed to make their communities thrive. They will work with partners on the ground to carry out community building training programs, projects and events.

What is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a conversation about change to help families make meaningful life changes towards the health of their child. This process discovers a person’s values and interests and is designed to decrease barriers and increase readiness to make a change, providing concrete, person-focused tools to help address ambivalence and engagement.
 
North Country Health Consortium is offering a free online training on Motivational Interviewing on January 31 & February 7, 2023 from 9:00-12:00.

  • How our intent can influence the behavior change process
  • The 4 processes and mindset that guide MI conversations

Climate Change Workshop

New Hampshire’s Project WILD and Project WET are offering a 7- hour teacher professional development workshop all about Climate Change.  This workshop is for educators of middle and high school-age students who want to learn how to incorporate climate change into their classroom lessons. The day will focus on hands-on activities to get you learning about climate change as it relates to the natural environment in New Hampshire and the world.  Formal science teachers, informal environmental educators, and homeschool parents are encouraged to attend. This topic impacts all school subjects, not just science! Teachers of all subjects are welcome.
All participants will receive two climate change curriculum books, one from Project WET and one from Project WILD.  Sign up today to reserve your space!  Space is limited to 20 educators.

High School Mathematics Competition at PSU
10-member mathematics teams consisting of no more than four seniors and a maximum of eight juniors and seniors combined are invited to join a competition on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Plymouth State University (snow date of Thursday, March 16). Team will have the opportunity to meet with other students from throughout the state in a day of exciting, challenging, competitive mathematics exercises in six different categories.

sensor imageNCES has a set of Vernier probes and sensors to donate to a classroom of an educator employed by a member school district. These were used with a set of 15 LabQuest 2s. The batteries in the LabQuest 2s will likely need to be replaced ($23 each) or have to be plugged in to operate. Alternatively, the equipment can be used with the modern LabQuest 3 interface. Several Vernier lab books included as well.

In session one, educators spent time familiarizing themselves with Spike Essentials and Spike Prime. The evening included lots of laughter watching their respective robots do their thing!
