Here's Kim Wilson and The Fabulous Thunderbirds on the Oct 2022 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.

The multi-award winning, Grammy Nominated band fronted by founder harmonica man and vocalist Wilson, is the quintessential Texas roadhouse blues band. Over the years since it's formation, the Fabulous Thunderbirds have had a lineup featuring some of the top players in the business. This current lineup is no different and they killed us, as usual, with their non-stop, and undeniable "tuff" grooves.

Saskatoon Blues Society presents the 2023
Saskatoon Blues Festival Mar 3-4
(SASKATOON, CANADA) – The Saskatoon Blues Society presents the Saskatoon Blues Festival Friday Mar 3rd and Saturday March 4th at The Bassment, 202 4th Ave N.

Friday March 3rd it’s Jerron ”Blind Boy” Paxton who has the ability to tap into traditional American music revealing a perceptiveness and focus that few others are able to achieve. A gifted multi-instrumentalist who specializes in traditional, pre-World War II music, he plays the fiddle, banjo, guitar, harmonica, and piano; and traditional blues revivalists GA-20, the dynamic, throwback blues trio who are disciples of the place where traditional blues, country and rock ‘n’ roll intersect. Doors 7:30pm, show 8:30pm.

Saturday March 4th it’s Marcus Trummer weaves southern soul, blues, and roots rock into a modern sound steeped in tradition that Trummer calls “rock and soul;” bluesman Billy Joe Green from the Moose Clan of the Kejick Ojibway Nation, has worked as a sideman and bandleader in Winnipeg, Vancouver, San Francisco and Edmonton for three decades; and Rita Chiarelli whose soaring 3-octave voice sets her apart from her peers, causing critics to gush... "a voice that can growl at her demons or soar with the angels, a gift for lyric, an ear for melody and the heart to combine them." Over the past decade Rita Chiarelli has won every major Canadian blues award. Doors 6:30, show 7:30pm

Tickets, sold separately for Friday and Saturday, and available at the door or online. Earlybird Tickets - $47.70 (Includes 6% PST). After Feb 10th, $58.30 (Includes 6% PST). Scroll to click the applicable ticket links on this page.

Michael Rubin :: I’LL WORRY IF I WANNA
"I’ve just enjoyed listening to Michael Rubin’s new album. It was a fascinating listen…very creative and with humor, too. Every song is interesting with killer tones and phrasings!!! Michael sure knows his way around a harmonica and the backing band is also excellent. Any harmonica player would appreciate this entire album. I ain’t lyin’!” - Charlie Musselwhite

Having distinguished himself as a sideman for many years, Michael Rubin finally steps into the spotlight, not only as a harmonica master, but also as a singer-songwriter on his debut album, I’ll Worry If I Wanna, on Many Hats Records. The cartoon cover, as well as the title itself, assures the listener that the blues they’re about to hear will be laced with humor. Lots of it.

Co-produced by Josh Fulero and Rubin (many hats indeed!), the album features nine Rubin originals. The core backing band includes Mike Keller on guitar, Michael Archer on bass, and Mark Hays on drums, along with several memorable guest players. This impressive assemblage provides a crisp, economical yet powerful setting for Rubin’s superlative harmonica and quirky vocals. His voice is often reminiscent of David Bromberg’s with its talky, idiosyncratic phrasing and loose delivery, which oddly enough provides a remarkably effective counterpoint to the incredibly tight band. Rather than seem disjointed, to the contrary this coupling draws the listener in.

Just in Case: January is, among other things, "National Eye Care Month." This brought to mind all the blind blues artists from the past. It was a tough life for a blind person, especiallyin the early days of poverty, blatant racism and disease. Many of them, unable to work the only jobs available to them that mainly consisted of manual labor, learned how to play an instrument and became corner blues artists as a means to try and support themselves. Some ended up being recorded. Names such as Blind Willie Johnson (pictured), Blind Willie McTell, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind John Davis, Sonny Terry, Blind Blake, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Teddy Darby, Blind Joe Reynolds, Sleepy John Estes, Blind Joe Taggart, Reverend Gary Davis, and Snooks Eaglin come to mind.

Some were born blind or became very soon after, while some were blinded by accidents (or sadly deliberate), some were blinded by diseases (venereal disease, smallpox, measles, glaucoma, etc.) that had no cure at the time, some were blinded by altercations (gunshot, rocks). Certainly, malnutrition may have played a part. It was a bleak existence for many, so the fact that they actually were recorded and/or signed to a label like Paramount Records is amazing, although that didn’t assure them consistent financial gain in the long run and many died in poverty. A few made it big and many influenced and still influence artists to this day.

A few other more contemporary blues-based, blind artists include the late Jeff Healey, and Ray Charles, the soulful Stevie Wonder, and The Blind Boys of Alabama (the majority of whom are or were vision impaired.)

Oh, and January 21 is "Thank Your Mentor Day." We all have people that have come into our live in one way shape or form and have made a difference in our lives. Besides the obvious of family and close friends, or those few very special and unique friends, I could think of so, so many musicians who have moved me heled me, transformed me into a stronger more enlightened individual.

Musicians and the music.
Music is a healer and a mentor for real.
