Black Legacy Project launches in the Mississippi Delta February 22–28
(CLARKSDALE, MS) – Music in Common announces the MS Delta launch of The Black Legacy Project, a musical celebration of Black history to advance racial solidarity, equity, and belonging. As it travels the country, the Black LP brings together Black and White artists and artists of ALL backgrounds to record present day interpretations of songs central to the Black American experience and compose originals relevant to the pressing calls for change of our time. Community roundtable discussions will help inform how these songs are interpreted and written.

After more than a year of development in the wake of the killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd, The Black Legacy Project kicked off in September 2021 in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. Since then, the Project has traveled to Los Angeles, the Ozarks of northwest Arkansas, and Denver. In 2023, it will launch in Atlanta, the Mississippi Delta, and Boise, hitting the Delta February 22-28 with events and programs for musicians and non-musicians alike.

In each community the Black LP travels to, songs addressing a theme connected to the local community are reimagined and composed. Musicians interested in performing or recording on the project can audition online

The selected theme for the Delta is “I Am The Blues,” which explores the origins of Blues music and its roots in the Black American experience, especially of those living in the Mississippi Delta. The project will unpack the enormous contributions of Black musicians to the American musical landscape via the blues, often overlooked and at times appropriated.

Analysis of the songs, “I Am The Blues ” by Muddy Waters and “Poor Man’s Blues” by Bessie Smith, will foster a greater understanding of these contributions and the crediting of them to Black artists. Community members will analyze the lyrics of these songs in round table discussions to help inform how they are musically reinterpreted by local musicians. The roundtable will take place on Wednesday, February 22nd at 7PM. Registration is required. Location will be disclosed at that time.

Following the roundtable discussion, local artists will spend several days working up new arrangements of these songs as well as composing an original. The Delta songs will be recorded and the project will culminate with two free performances on February 27th at the Grammy Museum in Cleveland, MS and on February 28th at the BB King Museum in Indianola, MS. Both events, which also include a documentary screening of the pilot episode of the Black LP docuseries and a community conversation, start at 7PM and are free and open to all. Tickets can be reserved at this site.

The Black Legacy Project is funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (opportunity number DHS-22-TTP-132-00-01) and a long list of national and local partners. The Black LP is produced by Music in Common, an Atlanta-based nonprofit that strengthens, empowers, and connects communities through the universal language of music.

Since 2005, Music In Common has directly served thousands of people in more than 300 communities across the globe and across religious, ethnic, cultural, and racial axes. The organization was founded by singer-songwriter and producer Todd Mack in response to the murder of his friend and bandmate, Daniel Pearl, the Wall St. Journal reporter abducted by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002.

M.C. Records Celebrates Black History Month
(NORTHPORT, NY) - M.C. Records proudly announce our 3rd annual Black History Month playlist. They have added new songs from last year. Artists include Odetta, Guy Davis, Corey Harris, Mavis Staples, Big Jack Johnson, Cyril Neville and more. The playlist has 20 tracks, some of them are from their Grammy nominated recordings.

"These artists are truly amazing and this rich collection of African-American music comes from blues, folk, and gospel," says label President Mark Carpentieri. "Sadly, some of these great artists are no longer with us but their music lives on and continues to inspire and will for generations."

You can listen to the M.C. Records 3rd annual Black History Month playlist on Spotify and Soundcloud.

Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. To find out more about Black History Month, you can click here from The Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
The Blues & the African-American Story
The annual observance of February as Black History Month puts a spotlight on the struggles and triumphs of African-Americans in helping to build and shape the nation and our collective culture. Part of that culture is music, and the Blues has influenced all genres.

The Delta Blues Museum invites you to visit their Gift Shop to find a unique collection of first-person memoirs and in-depth histories: David “Honeyboy” Edwards shares his journey in The World Don't Owe Me Nothing, and Bobby Rush's memoir, I Ain't Studdin' Ya, details his stories of becoming “King of the Chitlin’ Circuit.” The Life and Legacy of B.B. King features interviews with the legend’s bandmates and family members for an intimate look at the man behind the music. Lost Delta Found is a documentation by Fisk scholars of life and music in 1940s Coahoma County, Mississippi. Robert Palmer's Deep Blues traces the odyssey of the blues from its rural beginnings... and there's much more to discover.

Your purchase helps the Delta Blues Museum preserve and present the legacy of the Delta Blues.

Scott Ellison :: ZERO 2 SIXTY
For Zero 2 Sixty, Scott wanted to strip things down and deliver a blinding Blues album to follow his #1 album There’s Something About the Night released a year ago. Over the course of 12 tracks, Scott’s searing guitar, slide
guitar, bass guitar and soulful vocals makes for a potent one-two punch! From Chicago-meets-Texas-meets-Oklahoma shuffle and groove, to a full tilt Blues-Rock workout, pure soul blues and just about every point in between.
This album checks all the Blues boxes and then some.

Writing and recording from his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The record features his primary backing and touring band on some tracks and some very special guests and longtime friends from Tulsa. Ellison, who co-wrote all 12 songs with Michael Price, four of those with Michael and Chris Campbell. With an array of styles woven in one cohesive package, Zero-2-Sixty takes Ellison’s past to present and reinvents them as a bold template for the future.

Just in Case:
February 11th is "National Guitar Day." I'm so in awe of guitar players! Whether simple or on fire, what truly amazing feats and seemingly magic can come from this  instrument. According to some sources, the world's oldest surviving guitar is more than 400 years old. It was built in the late 16th century by a Portuguese man named Belchior Dias.

It's also "Get Your Guitar Out Day," so if you have one and haven't played it in a while, or are still learning, consider this day as a wake-up call! You'll just might be glad you shook out the cobwebs, or even polished off that song you've been working on. Now, that would be cool and an accomplishment that could nourish yours and probably others' musical souls. Express yourself!
