Buddy Shute and The Motivators :: YOU GOTTA MOVE
Buddy Shute and the Motivators are bringing you good time blues. This hot little band from Arkansas have recently released their new self-produced EP, You Gotta Move.

Buddy Shute and Brenda Beauregardenia Baskin, both hailing from Memphis, share the vocals and songwriting. The influences from their Bluff City upbringing are upfront throughout the EP’s four original and one Bluedacious cover tune. The songs and musicianship on You Gotta Move contain so much of those timeless, honest feelings, KFFA’s King Biscuit Time Radio show, the worlds most respected blues program, honored the Motivators by playing “Someday Baby, Someday,” a tune from their EP, as the first song of 2023.

The driving title tune, “You Gotta Move,” opens with Brenda on vocals and features harmonica ace Mark McGee, followed by “Someday Baby, Someday” with Buddy and Brenda on vocals, a bluesy shuffle that lets the band stretch out.

The thing that impresses you most about Brenda’s vocals and the band’s arrangement of Elton John/Bernie Taupin’s “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word,” is they do not try to impress.

Keith Hubbard on piano, lays down some late-night piano on “4 O’Clock Blues” with Buddy on vocals and guitar. Meanwhile, “Here To Stay,” a swampy mambo, reminds us all that justice is long walk on the stones of resistance.

You Gotta Move’s motivational force is supplied by: Mark McGee-harmonic, Steve Baskin-bass, Randy Reese and Kevin Carl Bonner-drums, Keith Hubbard (by way of New Orleans)- piano, organ, and Matthew Beach-congas. East Hall Recording – Chris Moore, Fayetteville Arkansas.

From festival stage to backroom juke joints with gravel parking lots, Buddy Shute & the Motivators good-time blues make you glad you came to the party.

New Video Release Debbie Bond "Let Freedom Ring"
Alabama-based indie blues artist, Debbie Bond, releases "Let Freedom Ring" on Thursday, February 23, 2023, the first of a series of videos supporting her critically acclaimed album, Blues Without Borders.

(Click image at left to watch video)

Debbie says, "It felt right to release this video during Black History Month. Of course 'black history' is American history all year round! Living in Alabama I am continually reminded of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, who gave his life in the fight for freedom, justice and against racism. Recorded during the pandemic I was particularly inspired by The Black Lives Matters movement here and abroad. Dr. King's courage and his message about how the power of love can overcome hate is as pertinent today as ever."

Singer, guitarist, songwriter, Debbie Bond has been based in the Alabama area for over 40 years backing legends like Johnny Shines, Sam Lay, Eddie Kirkland, Willie King and more. Influenced by the famed sounds of Muscle Shoals and juke joint blues, her sound is contemporary and original. Her immersion in Alabama blues has deeply flavored her guitar playing, soulful voice and original song writing. Her collaboration with her British born keyboard/harmonica player husband "Radiator" Rick has added a swampy New Orleans edge to her sound. The pair are regular touring artists in the U.S. and Europe.

Smithsonian Readying a New Robert Johnson Biography and a Trove of Unheard Field Recordings
A new Robert Johnson biography and a box set of previously unheard field recordings are among the first releases the Smithsonian and Folkways are planning from the collection of storied folklorist Robert “Mack” McCormick.

The Johnson book — Biography of a Phantom — will be released on April 4, with the new box set titled Playing for the Man at the Door out August 4. The National Museum of American History will also start exhibiting items from McCormick’s collection on June 23, with the display running for two years. More releases and events centered around the McCormick collection will be announced soon.

Biography of a Phantom: A Robert Johnson Blues Odyssey promises to offer “new insights” into the life of the legendary blues musician. McCormick spent decades researching Johnson, starting in the late Sixties, but the folklorist never shared any of his findings, with the biography remaining unfinished and unpublished at the time of his death in 2015. Biography of a Phantom will include 40 unseen black-and-white photos documenting McCormick’s work and research over the years.

As for Playing for the Man at the Door, the three CD/six vinyl LP collection features 66 never-before-heard performances from an array of Black artists, including legendary figures like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb. The recordings were made between 1958 and 1971 across what McCormick referred to as “Greater Texas,” a region that encompassed Western Louisiana, East Texas, and parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Just in Case:
"World Bartender Day" February 24." Bartenders are indispensable to the hospitality industry. We can't imagine a pub, bar, or nightclub without a bartender, right? They keep patrons well supplied with beverages, whether alcoholic or other, and they can keep the party going, not just enable you to drown your sorrows. They can be creative and also be great sounding boards, or gurus of sage advice. And you know there have been plenty of Blues songs written or referring to bars and drinkin'. "Hey Bartender" (Floyd Dixon), "You're So High (I Ain't Drunk)" (Albert Collins), "Sittin' Here Drinkin'" (Muddy Waters), "One Bourbon, One Acotch, One Beer" (John Lee Hooker), "Beer Bottle Boogie" (Koko Taylor), "Bad, Bad Whiskey" (Amos Milburn)... yep, I could go on but you can dive in and discover a bunch more if you like.
