Alki UCC Weekly Messenger March 9, 2023
From the Pastor

Dear Alki UCC,

In this second week of Lent, we ask the question, “How do we begin again?”

We plant seedlings. We risk vulnerability and voice the untold part of our story — the part that wasn’t ready to be heard until this moment.”

Sometimes all we see is a foot in front of us, if that. Sometimes we have to take out all the stitches and begin again. Empty the cabinets and box up the memories. Get out of bed and get dressed and say thank you. Start over.

We look to those who lead the way. We look within. Seeker, keep asking your questions. You are not alone. Come back to the start, to the center.

You won’t want to miss Bonita C’s testimony, truth-telling, on Sunday morning in worship. We join as a sacred community to hear one another into faith. Let’s begin.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

“In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge . . .

Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life’s desire.”
From "To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings"
by John O’Donahue

“I’m not sure exactly how we begin again,
but I know that moths wrap themselves in silk,
and after quite some time,
after many long nights,
after days spent alone,
they break out of their shell.
They pull themselves out under open sky,
and they spend the rest of their days chasing the light.”
From "How do we begin again?"

What does it mean to be a seeker?

There is an inner restlessness inherent in being human ... a response to something or someone outside ourselves inviting us into relationship. Join us for engaging discussions to explore how to listen for and pay attention to this restlessness, a deep desire for something more.

As we journey together, we’ll come back to the questions: What am I seeking? What is God seeking? We pray that our questions will create a safe space to explore and to be drawn more deeply into the heart of God.

Questions? Julia P, Rev. Penny M, Russ T and Pastor Emily
This Sunday:
Join the "Grow it Forward" Potting Team
Alki UCC is hosting another "Grow it Forward" micro-nursery this year! We need your help! Please join us this Sunday after worship to help pot 100 Douglas Fir bareroot seedlings.

All supplies provided, but please bring trowel and gloves if you have them. Depending on how many folks we have, it should take about 90 minutes or so to pot-up the trees. All ages welcome!

Bonus Opportunity! A few more home gardeners are needed to reach the annual goal of 100 regional hosts. The trees only take up 4' x 4' once they're potted. Sign up on the Grow it Forward website.

Grow it Forward has a fascinating history! Check out their website or read more in this linked background sheet.

Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum Status
March 9 Update
Dear Alki members and friends,

Pictured at left, Luna is the centerpiece of our campaign to raise money to keep her and her relatives safe.

Thank you so much for your continued support in the form of prayers, clothing and household items, volunteering, and yes, money for our Peruvian asylum seekers. With most, but not all, of their basic needs now taken care of, here is a new appeal through GoFundMe to try to garner critically-needed financial support to secure legal aid for our three families.

The stark reality is that our families have virtually no chance of being granted asylum without legal representation. After exhausting every avenue to secure free attorney services, we are faced with paying $30,000 in legal fees.

Please take a moment to read the attached. Your financial support would be most appreciated, and even if you can't make a contribution, please consider passing this GoFundMe link along to your family and friends. Every little bit will help!

Thanks so much for your consideration. — Vicky S

One Great Hour of Sharing Special Offering
Next Sunday

Next Sunday, March 19, we will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) special mission offering of the United Church of Christ. When a disaster strikes or people are displaced or made refugees by violence or extreme poverty, you can be part of the immediate response and long-term recovery.

Through OGHS you engage in holistic development programs including health care, education, agriculture, food sustainability, micro-financing and women’s empowerment. Because the UCC relates in mutual partnership to churches and organizations through Global Ministries and worldwide networks, your contributions to One Great Hour of Sharing put you in the right place at the right time for the relief, accompaniment and recovery of the most vulnerable. You meet immediate needs and you address the underlying causes that create those needs in the first place.
