Alki UCC Weekly Messenger March 16, 2023
From the Pastor

Dear Alki UCC,

We hear God say to us: "You are enough." We remind ourselves and each other of this truth all of the time, because it’s not always easy to believe.

We are works in progress. Even still, we are enough, each one of us, because we belong to God.

It is especially disturbing and disheartening to hear about legislation promoting the view that the enoughness of precious trans lives are somehow up for debate. They are not. God says, you are enough. More than enough — you belong to me.

I commend this article from UCC leaders with resources on “speaking faith-based truth and offering care for trans siblings within our country and globally.” The article affirms: “For our trans and non-binary youth, know the United Church of Christ acts in solidarity with you. You are a beloved child of God, created with vibrant love and intention. Within your body rests a sacred offering of God’s multitude. You belong here. We see you. And, we love you!”

Our poetry-prayer this week from the devotional Seeking: Honest Questions for Deeper Faith reminds us of our enoughness, our wholeness in Christ:

anything and everything
I’d give you a drink,
a warm cup of tea with lemon and mint,
a confetti cannon, roses from the garden,
my favorite sweatshirt,
a bed to lay in, homemade bread, a hand to hold.

I’d give you my full attention.
I’d give you my phone,
and say, put your number in.
I’d give you the melody line,
a standing ovation,
a sense of security.

I’d give you anything and everything
if it made you believe
that you were enough.

Let all the people say, Amen!

In hope,
— Pastor Emily

Outreach Donations Drive This Sunday
Bring your donations
to Sunday worship!

Sunday, March 19 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Front Courtyard

It's still cold and we're out of essential supplies critically needed by our unsheltered neighbors: gloves, hoodies, hand warmers and blankets. The days may be warming, but overnight temps can be challenging year round.

Basic nonperishable staples are also a priority, as well as peanut butter, canned proteins, canned fruits and vegetables (pop-tops preferred).
The Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), our donations drive partner, requests clean, wearable clothes in all sizes, appropriate for unsheltered men and women in cold weather. Outdoor gear is always needed: tents, tarps, backpacks, etc.

Your donations are distributed through WIN's "Welcome Table," a weekly Saturday meal for unsheltered and low-income folks hosted in White Center. This distribution serves as a stop-gap for many people relying on weekly visits to the food bank.

Many thanks to our generous community for supporting our neighbors in need!
Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum Status
Critical call for advocacy ...
     Please write President Biden!
The Biden administration has proposed
a harmful and inhumane asylum ban
and they need to hear from us by March 27.

If implemented, this outrageous policy would deny the majority of asylum seekers the right to request protection in the United States.

It is every person's legal right to seek safety for themselves and their families. US laws and treaties governing immigration have traditionally protected asylum seekers and prevented their return to countries where they might face persecution and torture.

The new policy will be based on how people arrived at the border and entered the United states, creating an inequitable system favoring those with money. The horrific policy of separating families will be reinstituted, putting already-terrified people in further jeopardy.

Anyone, regardless of immigration status, may submit a comment, but it has to be in English

Either email your note to: comments@whitehouse.gov

Potting Party Recap
Thanks to all who helped plant the 100 Douglas Fir tree seedlings after worship on Sunday. Some folks planted 10 and some planted two, but either way it was fun to gather at the round table on the patio and get the 100 trees planted

The seedlings are  now nestled in the NE corner of the front garden where they can be admired by all passers-by.

We will nurture and care for them for two growing seasons. Then in the fall of 2024 they will be planted along rivers and streams in the NW to help restore the salmon habitat of the creeks and provide oxygen to our air!

We are adding 100 big ole evergreens to our earth.

Thank you everyone!

Warmly,
Julia C and the Planting Team

(Check how they'll look all grown up!)

One Great Hour of Sharing Special Offering
This Sunday

This Sunday we will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) special mission offering of the United Church of Christ. When a disaster strikes or people are displaced or made refugees by violence or extreme poverty, you can be part of the immediate response and long-term recovery.

Through OGHS you engage in holistic development programs including health care, education, agriculture, food sustainability, micro-financing and women’s empowerment. Because the UCC relates in mutual partnership to churches and organizations through Global Ministries and worldwide networks, your contributions to One Great Hour of Sharing put you in the right place at the right time for the relief, accompaniment and recovery of the most vulnerable. You meet immediate needs and you address the underlying causes that create those needs in the first place.
