Debbie Bond's New Video Release "Road Song"
Alabama-based blues musicians Debbie Bond and “Radiator” Rick are excited to be releasing a brand-new video on Thursday April 6th, for "Road Song" from their latest album Blues Without Borders. The video also features their bumper sticker-plastered van, Big Blue! Please check it out here, like and subscribe!

They are thrilled to be heading down the blues hiway to play Clarksdale, Mississippi’s Juke Joint Festival later this month! Big Blue is all tuned up and ready to roll. Click here to check out all their upcoming dates in the US, France and UK.

Debbie Bond and “Radiator” Rick have been paying their dues in the Alabama backwoods for decades including working with Johnny Shines, Eddie Kirkland, the late great Willie King and more. Debbie was influenced by juke joint blues as well as the famed soul blues sounds of Muscle Shoals. British born keyboard, harmonica player "Radiator" added a swampy New Orleans edge to her sound. Together they have released their fourth studio recording, "Blues Without Borders," to international acclaim.

Debbie is a blues activist and the founder of the KBA-winning Alabama Blues Project, with a mission to promote and preserve Alabama’s rich blues heritage.

Last year they were nominated for Independent Blues Awards for Best Contemporary Blues Album" and "Best Contemporary Female Blues Artist" in the U.S., and this year they were nominated for "Best International Blues Artist 2023" by the UK Blues Federation. Catch ‘em if you can!

April is Muddy Waters Month at Delta Blues Museum
CLARKSDALE, MS) - April is Muddy Waters Month at the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

McKinley Morganfield a.k.a. Muddy Waters was born in Rolling Fork, MS, and moved to Coahoma County where he learned to play Delta blues from Son House and Robert Johnson. He made his first recordings for the Library of Congress in the early 1940’s. Soon after hearing the record, he moved to Chicago to pursue a career in music, taking his Mississippi blues roots and electrifying them to be heard throughout the city and the world.

You can hear those roots on Muddy Waters: Folk Singer, a 1964 album that features backing from Willie Dixon and Buddy Guy on songs such as “My Home is in the Delta” and which is credited with kicking off the blues revival of the Sixties. Available from the museum Gift Shop. Enjoy 10% off all "Muddy merch" with code Muddy2023 throughout the month of April!

Learn more about Muddy Waters by visiting the museum, or through our interactive Explore and Learn feature, a visual biography of his life and music.

Gayle Harrod :: TEMPTATION
A cavalcade of blues women – Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Memphis Minnie, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe – ruled the early days of radio and the record business while barnstorming across the country as band leaders performing their own material and popular favorites. Molding herself in their image, Baltimore chanteuse Gayle Weaver Harrod fronted several bands for over a decade before bringing together some of the best musical talent in the Mid-Atlantic blues scene to form The Gayle Harrod Band.

In the summer of 2022, along with her co-writers and bandmates guitarist Stan Turk, and drummer Chuck Ferrell, Harrod recorded her debut album Temptation, at 38 North Studios, with producer, Buddy Speir, and engineer, Sean Russell. Guest performers include guitarists Jonathan Sloane, Sol Roots, and Bobby Thompson; bassist Christopher Brown; and Brian Simms on piano and organ. Producer Buddy Speir contributes guitar, slide, organ, and Wurlitzer. The all-star background vocals are courtesy of Mary Ann Redmond, Dusty Rose, and The Voices of Faith of the First Baptist Church of Baltimore Choir. Also featured is Rachelle Danto on harmonica and The Beltway Horns: Greg Boyer on trombone, Brad Clements on trumpet, and Brent Birckhead on tenor sax.

From rollicking, snappy dance hall beats opening the set, to a powerful call to arms, to bump and grind blues, then the classic tale of the struggle between angels and devils for the title track. Then there’s swinging with a second line flair and a lively gospel-infused two beat followed by a bittersweet acoustic, back porch Delta Blues, an anthem of self-determination with 60’s girl group vibe, a driving rocker, and a tender Americana ballad. She then takes us on a philosophical and musical journey before closing the album with a spacious ballad that shares heartfelt advice to a lost loved one.

North Jersey Blues Society review of special presentation
A review of a reading of "Slippin' Through The Cracks - The Blues Journey of Bobby Rush" featuring music and lyrics by Bobby Rush from the North Jersey Blues Society writer who was part of a group of industry folks, friends and family to be lucky to be invited to witness this presentation at Pearl Studios in Manhattan. "The story is amazing - the actors are incredible - the voices are astonishing - and the band, and those majestic voices, raised the roof on many occasions," shares the reviewer. "This was a remarkable experience," the reviewer continues, "the cast reading of the proposed musical based on the amazing life of blues entertainer, Bobby Rush."

This extraordinary new musical about the legendary bluesman, Bobby Rush, is currently in development. The play was first professionally workshopped in Jackson, Mississippi last Summer to ensure its authenticity.

Just in Case: April 11 is "National 8-Track Tape Day." The eight track tape player was invented in 1965 by William Powell Lear (of the LearJet fame). In 1966 Lear sold Ford Motors on the idea of installing his magnetic-tape sound machine in their vehicles. Other automotive companies then followed suit. By 1967 the players were on the rise. By now, those in the know didn't have to own an album or just hear their favorites songs on the radio, they had a player at home or in their car. You could find pretty much every artist now on eight tracks from rock, pop, country, etc. and blues where could find everything from John Mayall to Wynonie Harris, B.B. King to Savoy Brown, Bobby Blue Bland to the Howlin' Wolf, Canned Heat and so on.

Eight track players and tapes were the precursor to cassette players and tapes and by 1982 they were phased out of the market. I have to admit, I was compelled to save just one from that era and pack it away for posterity.
