DLI NEWSLETTER 8 JUNE 2023
MEET OUR NEW DLI CHAIRPERSON!
Good afternoon Members & Friends

I write to you today as the newly elected chairperson of the Drama League of Ireland. I have been on the board for over two years, and I’d like to thank my fellow board members for putting their trust in me to lead this wonderful organisation for the next two years. Sincere thanks are also due to the outgoing chairperson, Willie O’ Brien, for his trusted and erudite guidance of the DLI during his term in office. I look forward to serving the board and its members to the utmost of my ability, and hope for your support and guidance along the way. We are an organisation that looks after its members, and I want everyone to feel that they can avail of all supports offered by DLI.

I am going to do my very best to ensure that the ethos of the DLI is sustained and that is to support, nurture and enhance the aspirations and activities of practitioners in the amateur theatre sector through education, training, advocacy and advisory services. Please engage with us - tell us what you need and how we can best support you, so that we can work together!! I have a couple of new simple initiatives for members to ensure that the non-competitive groups also feel that we are fully supportive of their adventures in drama. Aside from this, we will continue DLI training courses, updating you on drama news and opportunities, and working hard to ensure that the name and work of the DLI are recognised nationally.

I intend meeting many drama groups, festival committees and drama friends over the coming months, and while some groups may be heading into a summer recess, it’s all hands on-deck at DLI HQ as director Ollie Kenny, and his team, prepare for the hotly anticipated Summer School 2023. I will be there for the week (22-29 July) and look forward to spending time with tutors and students alike. I remind you that the summer recess could be well used by visiting our library at The Mill Theatre where Paul, with us since October 2022, has carefully and meticulously re-organised/re-stocked the shelves, creating a very comprehensive catalogue of plays available to all our members.

I am blessed to be surrounded by some of the most competent, committed and cool people in the world of drama on our board. I look forward to working with them in the year/s ahead, and with our wonderful administrator Valerie, who is known to all and works tirelessly for all our benefit.

If I can be of any assistance, please feel free to contact the DLI office or email me on edward@edwardhayden.ie

Yours in drama
Edward

DLI LIBRARY NEWS
Hi all! I hope you have been enjoying the sunshine lately. Since you last heard from me, I have been busy cataloguing and processing loans. In the past couple of weeks, there has been a significant increase in the number of people visiting the library in person – thanks to all those who have dropped in, it is always a pleasure to get to meet DLI members. For this edition of the newsletter, I have selected some of the most popular plays in recent weeks.
  • Bachelor Barney and Poor Jimmy by PG O’Dea
  • Da by Hugh Leonard
  • Bookworms and Happy Birthday Dear Alice/Stella By Starlight by Bernard Farrell
Some other popular scripts not pictured include Same Old Moon by Geraldine Aron -all our copies of this are currently out on loan. Also, the plays of Sam Cree, which are stored by the library in digital format and are regularly requested by members. If you’d like to borrow these or any other plays, be sure to contact me. Finally, if you are ever in the Dundrum area, be sure to pay us a visit!
