Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
Here's Amy Whitesell, CEO of A Music Company Inc., who are live music promoters, talent buyers, consultants, concert and festival organizers, etc. in the Pikes Peak region of Colorado. Along with various events throughout the year, they produce "Blues on The Mesa" coming Sept 30 to Colorado Springs.

Amy grabbed this pic at the recent Greeley Blues Jam in Greeley, Colorado. The annual event was setup and ready to be held on the lawn Island Grove Regional Park but last minute (literally) rain dictated it quickly be moved inside into the event center.

Shane Speal's 30 Year Cigar Box Guitar passion
(NEW ALEXANDRIA, PA) - It was 30 years ago when Shane Speal took a piece of barn wood from his father’s farm and attached it to a Swisher Sweets box, making his very first cigar box guitar. It was July 4, 1993. He had no idea that little project would transform his life.

Since then, he’s made it a life goal to teach others the art and he’s watched thousands and thousands of folks build and play their own cigar box guitars. He’s made thousands of those instruments, himself. And that old Swisher Sweets is now hanging on the walls of the Cigar Box Guitar Museum in historic Speal’s Tavern in New Alexandria, Pennsylvania.

The family tavern began as a beer garden and grocery store 1933. Since the 90s the walls of Speal's Tavern have been transformed into a unique display of handmade cigar box guitars, historical photos and art. One customer called it "New Alexandria's homemade Hard Rock Cafe." The collection of over 40 cigar box guitars displayed at Speal’s Tavern were built by craftsmen all over the country and range from simple, one-string primitive instruments to complex, electrified guitars with frets, double-necks and whammy bars.

At Shane's Cigar Box Guitar website you can also find some fantastic vintage to current photos of players and instruments, and short reads like “The Encyclopedia of the Cigar Box Guitar,” plus how to build and how to play homemade instruments. He also has a line of slides, instruments and books he sells at his Stubby Slide site.

Larry Taylor and the Taylor Family ::
GENERATIONS OF BLUES
"It is truly an honor to be working with Larry Taylor on this historic recording, released in commemoration of Eddie Taylor's 100th birthday," says Sallie Bengtson, Nola Blue Records president. "So many of the names, the places and most especially the experiences Larry has had in Chicago's West Side resonate with the stories Benny Turner told me as we worked on his autobiography. These living, breathing legacy artists carry forth the classic Chicago blues tradition and deserve our utmost support and recognition. We eagerly anticipate sharing the Taylor family's music with the worldwide blues community."

The Taylor family stands treetop tall as a fully-fledged and remarkably enduring Chicago Blues dynasty. That’s never been more apparent than with the release of Larry Taylor and the Taylor Family's Generations of Blues on Nola Blue Records.

In 2015, vocalist/drummer Larry Taylor assembled his brothers and sisters at Chicago’s Joyride Studios to pay loving tribute to their late father, Eddie Taylor, Sr., and the West Side blues tradition that so deeply influenced all of them. Its set list combines fresh and invigorating versions of their dad’s classic blues compositions and newly created themes illustrating the Taylor family’s unshakable dedication to the idiom. In addition, the collection now pays tribute to the 100th anniversary of their father’s birth in 1923.

The story begins with legendary Benoit, Mississippi-born guitarist Eddie Sr., who arrived in Chicago in 1949 and quickly carved out a sterling reputation as one of the city’s top bluesmen. He made seminal mid-‘50s sides as a leader for Vee-Jay Records (“Bad Boy,” “Ride ‘Em On Down,” “Big Town Playboy”) and served as blues immortal Jimmy Reed’s impeccable accompanist, his dazzling guitar technique influencing countless younger bluesmen including Freddie King. Eddie Sr. and his wife, singer Vera Taylor, were prime inspirations to their offspring as they grew up, instilling a tradition that they proudly carry on to this day.

Just in case:
July 12th is "National Pecan Pie Day!" 90% of Americans surveyed believe eating a slice of pie is one of life’s simple pleasures.

Years back I had some pecan pie at The Camellia Grille, the historic diner in News Orleans. The waiter asked me if I wanted it heated up. I don't think anyone had ever asked me that before. A local sitting near me said, yeh, I should go for it! I didn't realize the cook would be heating it up by slapping it on the grill in a big chunk of butter! Whoa! And yes, there it was delivered to me – hot, grilled pecan pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream slowly melting on top – and it was divine! If you're interested, that diner is on Carrollton Avenue near its intersection with St. Charles Avenue on the St. Charles Streetcar line.

Though many southern states have pecans, and are famous for their pecan pies, Texas is the only state with pecan pie as its official state dessert!
