Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
This is photo was captured in Rosarito, Baja, Mexico July 16 following a performance and food drive for Blues Against Hunger Society (BAHS). Singer/performer, award-winning, 12x Best Blues San Diego Music Awards nominee Michele Lundeen was the guest artist with members of the BAHS band Sweet Sixx. BAHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2013. Their mission is to "produce live blues music events that promote the collection and distribution of non-perishable food to the hungry while supporting, promoting and preserving the blues in the communities it serves." Gráinne Duffy :: DIRT WOMAN BLUES
For her fifth studio album, Dirt Woman Blues, Irish roots phenom singer, songwriter, and guitarist Gráinne Duffy ventured far from the Emerald Isle to sunny Southern California to find a bigger, bolder sound. The three-time Blues Matters Writers’ Poll winner, partnered with American blues rock guitarist Marc Ford, best known as a former member of The Black Crowes, creating a tandem guitar sound with her husband Paul Sherry, also in her band. They enlisted Gary Clark Jr.’s Austin, TX rhythm section; drummer/percussionist JJ Johnson and bass/keyboard player Elijah Ford (Marc’s son) along with Grammy-winning producer Chris Goldsmith, Jimmy Hoyson, Sam Goldsmith, John Ginty and Peter Levin.

The Dirt Woman Blues sessions yielded a collection of nine original tracks, composed by Duffy and Sherry, centering around Duffy’s haunting alto and a mash up of songwriting styles from Celtic storytelling to Delta Blues poetry and Laurel Canyon 70’s Rock.

On this ground-breaking release Gráinne Duffy supplies a unique mix of Irish mysticism, soulful vocals, an amazing groove, an extraordinary band, and beautifully crafted lyrics

Just in case: July is actually "National Fishing Month!" You know I'm going to try and think of some blues artists nicknames and songs that mention fish now. Well, right off the bat there's Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Samantha Fish and sister Amanda Fish, Catfish Keith, and I'm sure there's a few more.

Of course some lyrics come to mind like the blues classic, "Catfish Blues" " written and recorded by Robert Petway in 1941 "...well, if I was a catfish mama, I said swimming down in the deep blue sea..." It was performed and recorded by many artists and in many variations, often having it evolve into songs like Muddy Water's "Rolling Stone," and Jimi Hendrix' "Voodoo Chile." Elvin Bishop's "Fishin'" is such a fun classic in it's own right... "I'm going fish, fish, fish, fish, fish, fish, fishin'! I'm goin' fishin', hook sinker and line..." and the "Fishing Blues" composed in 1911 by Chris Smith and recorded by Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas in 1928..."any fish bites if you got good bait..." That song is a big part of Taj Mahal's catalog.
