Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
It was fun to run into blues fan Julie Richardson at the 2023 Gator By The Bay Festival in San Diego, California. Julie's based in Vancouver, Washington but travels around the globe to many destinations (Hawaii yearly it seems), various music festivals and blues cruises. And of course you can usually find her at the Portland Waterfront Festival. She does love to travel.

Julie's got it going on. She's a retired Air Traffic controller and is also a pilot and Airframe mechanic specializing in fabric work. She lives on a private grass runway and flies a 1941 Stearman bi-plane!

From Hand to Hand... Passing Down the Blues
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - Delta Blues Museum has added a special event to kick off its 2023 Sunflower Festival activities. On Thursday Aug 10 the Museum will host “From Hand to Hand: Passing Down the Blues." This educational panel will feature three graduates of the Delta Blues Museum Arts & Education Program — Jaxx Nassar, Anthony "Big A" Sherrod and Lee Williams. The graduates learned from Mr. Johnnie Billington, founder of the Museum's after-school program, and were members of "The Deep Cuts." The band was fronted by late local bluesman Josh "Razorblade" Stewart. Arts & Education Program graduate Travis Calvin, a current instructor at the Delta Music Institute at Delta State University, will moderate.

The in-person panel be held in the Museum classroom, 1 Blues Alley, at 6pm. This event is free and open to the public and will also be livestreamed on the Museum's Facebook page. This event is made possible by the Mississippi Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additionally, a small exhibit of photographer Panny Mayfield's images of the panelists as students will be on display.

For over 30 years, the Museum's award-winning Arts & Education program has taught students to play music that keeps the history of the Delta blues alive. The program has been recognized nationally as a top youth program and has been elevated in recent news because of the high-profile success of one of its graduates, Grammy-winning blues musician Christone "Kingfish" Ingram.

For more information, contact Delta Blues Museum at 662-627-6820 or visit the website. To livestream the event, visit the Museum’s Facebook page.
"Blues Music Is My First Love": Christone “Kingfish” Ingram Reveals Five Life-Changing Riffs
The Fender signature artist and Grammy-winning bluesman talks vital influences from Albert King and B.B. King to Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Hazel.

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram learned his first guitar licks in an after-school program at the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the home of the crossroads that many music fans consider hallowed ground.

Ingram may be known for keeping the traditions of his hometown Delta blues alive, but that’s only h

As it happens, influences ranging from psychedelic funk to gospel and hip-hop have their own chapters in it as well.

Here are the five riffs that shaped his guitar playing...

Why Nina Simone Was Always Ahead of Her Time
Nina Simone was always ahead of her time. And in the mid-1960s she found a fellow musical innovator and ideal feminist collaborator in the jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln, whom she teamed up with to write the song “Blues for Mama.” When Simone performed it at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1966, she introduced it as “a gutbucket blues.”

“It will appeal to a certain type of woman,” she said, “who has had this kind of experience.”

That experience was domestic violence, a trauma that the titular Mama endured and that others blamed her for causing. “They say you’re mean and evil/Don’t know what to do,” Simone sang. “And that’s the reason that he’s gone/And left you black-and-blue.”

I’ve been intrigued by “Blues for Mama” since I first heard it on Simone’s 1967 album “Nina Simone Sings the Blues.” And now, thanks to Verve Records’ recent issue of the previously unreleased recording of her Newport performance — packaged as the album “You’ve Got to Learn” — we have an even earlier version of the song out in the world.

Franck L. Goldwasser :: WHO NEEDS THIS MESS!!??
French born guitarist Franck L. Goldwasser, aka “Paris Slim,” became enamored with American blues music as a teenager. He worked to hone his craft before being discovered by renowned harmonica player Sugar Blue and California bluesman Sonny Rhodes, who brought him to the West Coast. In the 1980’s Goldwasser worked with a who’s who of the Bay Area’s most prestigious residents.

His new album’s title track, "Who Needs This Mess!!??," features musical cohorts Charlie Musselwhite, Sugaray Rayford and Kirk Fletcher. Like his storied career, the fifteen-track collection features a star-studded cast of friends, on a journey that flows over the musical landscape that grew out of the blues and his love for the guitar.

Kirk Fletcher guests on the comically swing-meets-surf guitar instrumental titled “Disküm Baåb Uleh Shun.” There’s a juke joint stomper “Had A Dream Last Night,” the blues ramble “Paris Woman,” and the instrumental “Sobby Doggy Boogy,” that showcases Goldwasser’s lap steel skills on this island spiced groover. Sugaray Rayford steps to the mic for “Who Needs That Mess!!??,” delivering life lessons. Alastair Greene and Goldwasser collaborated on “Monkey Junk,” a psychedelic trance blues with mysterious jungle rhythms to accompany spoken word poetry. “If I Could Holler” is a raggedy two beat. “Ðumb & Dangerous” dishes up a full jug band remake of “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” with Goldwasser on dobro supported by percolating folk instruments.

The epic track, “Sweet Cream,” is a mash up of Fat Possum funk and Birmingham Blitz boogie, like John Bonham sitting with T-Model Ford. Goldwasser pulls off fine finger picking on the Chet Atkins’ inspired solo guitar number, “Raggmazazz.”

The bonus live track “Bleedin’ Heart,” from a 2014 appearance at the Portland waterfront festival, captures him with a full band working the 12-bar blues with the showstopping flare of seasoned pros.

Just in case: August 8 is "International Cat Day" — a day to celebrate one of man’s most common, ancient, and celebrated pets. Independent, adventurous, cool. I think we can take a step further and think of all the "cool cats" or references that have crossed our path in the blues. "Black Cat Bone" (Albert Collins and more) comes to mind ... Ana Popovic's "Daddy Was A Preacher (Mama Was An Alley Cat), "Mean Black Cat Blues by Charley Patton, "Stray Cat Blues" ... and more

While sliding around that YouTube rabbit hole I rediscovered "It Should've Been Me," an old song my band used to do by Commander Cody (originally recorded by Ray Charles with Jesse Stone in 1954) with a line that went like this...
"Down on the corner, was a real sharp cat... had a $300 suit, $100 hat. Standing on the curb, by a Dynaflow, voice from inside said 'come on daddy let's go!'"
