Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
Here's the fiery, charismatic award-winning guitarist, singer, songwriter Laurie Morvan following an inspired Aug 1st performance with her band at Palisades Tahoe's Bluesday Tuesday. "This was one of the best shows that has happened," exclaimed photographer Dave Rocco. "She was over the edge for this night. I have not seen the crowd so alive at one of these shows!"
The band delivers hot, modern blues, spiced with burning guitar solos, soulful harmonies and compelling songwriting.

Along with multiple club dates, look for the Laurie Morvan Band at these the Lawndale Blues Festival in Lawndale, CA Sept 9, Kern River Rock N Blues Festival Sept 22 in Kernville, CA, and Blues & Bones Festival in Angels Camp, CA Sept 23.

Experience the World’s Largest Backyard Party Labor Day Weekend Sept 1-3
(RENTIESVILLE, OK) – The Rentiesville Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival is coming Sept 1-3, 2023. The 33rd annual will feature 50 acts on 3 stages over 3 days in Rentiesville, Oklahoma. Hidden in the woods, the festival is located 2 miles north of 1-40 up US 69 on a 5-acre old family farm. Gates will open at 4pm and the music starts at 6pm. The 2 outdoor stages go until midnight or 1am. The indoor stage in the Juke Joint club also starts at 6 pm, but continues until 5am. The festival is all ages but must be 21+ in the indoor club.

There will be regional showcases of not only Oklahoma bands, but acts from states around the country. There’s also a Kid’s Village and a Harmonica Workshop, and much more. Stages are the D.C. Minner Club Stage, the Back Porch Stage and the Main Stage. Artists appearing over the weekend include Watermelon Slim, Andrew Jr. Boy Jones, Selby Minner, Ronnie Pyle, Hydramatics, Akeem Kemp and many, many more.

Volunteer! It takes a lot of people to put on a Festival. If you help them out for three hours (before, during or after the event) you get your $18 admission fee back and a half price discount on a T Shirt. Dubbed the 'World's Largest Backyard Party" by D.C. Minner and "Awesome" by National Geographic, this "Must See Event" (says the Blues Foundation) will not disappoint.

So, hey everybody…tell everybody... that in Rentiesville, Oklahoma there’s a little ol’ juke joint called the Down Home Blues Club. It's authentic, funky and very much alive!
New Venue for Keokuk’s Rollin’ on the River Blues Festival
(KEOKUK, IA) - The 2023 Rollin’ on the River Blues Festival will move indoors this year to the Grand Theatre, 26 N. Sixth St., Keokuk, Iowa.

For over 30 years the festival was 2 days and held outside at Victory Park along the Mississippi River in Keokuk. This year has changed because of declining fundraising and the number of volunteers, says event organizer Randy Fish.

For the 35th Rollin’ on the River, three bands will be performing for one night only, on August 19. Appearing are The Matt Roberts Blues Band at 5 pm, John Nemeth at 7pm, and Shawn Holt at 9pm. Tickets are $20 and $10 for 18 and younger.

There will be live music on Sixth St. from 3-5pm before and again after the festival, hosted by Lucky’s Irish Pub & Grub. Bring a non-perishable food item for the food drive. Toys For Tots will also be there. From 1-3pm is the Young Peoples Workshop & Activities at Knights of Columbus, 11 N 6th St., sponsored by Keokuk Community Fine Arts Council.

Food and beverages will also be sold outside along Sixth Street at Lucky’s Irish Pub & Grub, located across the street from the theater.

Fish said the new indoor venue will make the event affordable for organizers this year. Hopefully fans will show their support for the festival and with the help of more sponsorship and volunteers, this long-standing cherished event will someday be back to roll on the river.

GRAMMY Museum Mississippi To Showcase “Highway 61: Traveling America’s Music Highway” Exhibit
GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi, which hosted the Music Tourism Convention earlier this year, is set to unveil a groundbreaking exhibit titled “Highway 61: Traveling America’s Music Highway” on Friday, August 11. This first-of-its-kind exhibit will take visitors on a journey along Highway 61, exploring the iconic music sites and honoring the artists who have played a pivotal role in shaping American music history. The exhibit will run until 2024.

The “Highway 61: Traveling America’s Music Highway” exhibit aims to educate music enthusiasts with its collection of artifacts from renowned artists such as Muddy Waters, Ann Peebles, Dr. John, Bobby Rush and Conway Twitty, among others. Visitors will have the opportunity to delve into the history of these influential musicians through artist interviews, interactive experiences, and even a Juke Joint. Moreover, the exhibit will include a dedicated section commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Recording Academy Memphis Chapter, showcasing significant milestones from the chapter’s storied past.

Emily Havens, Executive Director of GRAMMY Museum Mississippi, expressed her excitement about sharing the stories behind Highway 61, stating, “Passing through Tunica and Clarksdale through Cleveland, Vicksburg, and Natchez, Highway 61 carries incredible stories that have shaped much of music history, especially the blues. We can’t wait to share these stories with our visitors through this first-of-its-kind exhibit.”Highway 61, which stretches from Memphis in the North to the Louisiana line in the South, has played an integral role in music history.

Documentary explores how Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan brought Texas blues to the masses

In the 1960s, most of the music on the radio was inspired by The Beatles and emerging psychedelic rock. But two brothers from the Dallas area were inspired by the guitar playing they heard in small blues clubs.

A new documentary, Jimmie & Stevie Ray Vaughan: Brothers in Blues follows them from the Oak Cliff neighborhood to the top of the music charts.

Producer and director Kirby Warnock told the Texas Standard he drew in part on his own memories of watching some of the Vaughan brothers’ earliest performances.

Read the interview intro and interview by Michael Marks and Laura Rice with the producer/director. See the trailer on YouTube.

Arlen Roth and Jerry Jemmott :: SUPER SOUL SESSION!

It is such a gift and hard-won privilege when an artist reaches the point in their career when they can make art for art’s sake. The new album Super Soul Session! from Arlen Roth and Jerry Jemmott reflects that joy and status. Guitar hero and music education pioneer Roth, aka “Master of the Telecaster,” and Grammy winning bassist, Jerry Jemmott, aka “The Groovemaster,” were both chief session and touring musicians of the late 1960s and early 1970s, working with many of the period's well-known Rock, Pop Soul, Blues and Jazz artists.

The longtime friends join forces on a baker’s dozen of iconic tracks from their career discography in celebration of over 50 years of making great music. The pair invited A-list players to join them for the New York sessions enlisting the talents of keyboardists Bruce Katz & Alex Salzman, rhythm guitarist Tom Gage, drummer Chris Parker, The Uptown Horns and special guests Joe Louis Walker and African vocalist Mukamuri.

The collection of cover songs is not only a trip down memory lane, but also a loving exploration and deep dive into some of the duo’s favorite songs, many of which they had a hand in creating originally.

Just in case: "National Vinyl Record Day is Aug 12. Also known as a phonograph record, the first vinyl ever created was by American inventor Emile Berliner in the 1890s. By 1895, record players were released to the masses, but soon became dominated by the rise of radio.

Though record players still sold well in the ’30s and ’40s, it wasn’t until the ’60s and ’70s that the golden age of records reached its peak. I imagine some of you had a full-on collection of your favorite records. Digging through record bins was an exciting pastime on any given day. Or finding gems at yard sales was also cool. This Etta James one was a life-changer for me personally.

Surprisingly vinyls have made a comeback in recent years. We do like to bring back favorite nostalgic things don't we? Or maybe we want to try and sell old vinyl? But alas, value of course, is in the eye of the beholder.
