The Count Basie Orchestra (featuring special guests)
:: Basie Swings The Blues
|
|
Candid Records announces the Sept. 15 release of Basie Swings the Blues, the latest recording by the legendary Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Scotty Barnhart.
This extraordinary record fuses the Basie Orchestra’s signature style of sophisticated swing with the raw and soulful talents of a cross section of some of the greatest blues and jazz artists of our times. The album features a stellar lineup of blues icons and contemporary stars including Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, Keb’ Mo’, Robert Cray, George Benson, Shemekia Copeland, Ledisi, Mr. Sipp, Lauren Mitchell, Bettye LaVette, and Charlie Musselwhite.
Produced by Barnhart along with GRAMMY® Award winning producer John Burk (Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company), and GRAMMY® winning drummer, producer Steve Jordan (The Rolling Stones), the album takes listeners on a captivating journey through the heart and soul of American music and showcases a shared musical language that still powerfully impacts listeners globally.
In preparation for the Basie Swings the Blues sessions, Barnhart took a pilgrimage to Mississippi. He drove through the areas where Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters and others birthed and played this music. The resulting album is joyful mix of downhome, Delta Blues with the deep swing and sophistication that only The Count Basie Orchestra can provide.
Barnhart’s vision to merge the classic Count Basie sound with authentic blues is fully realized with the help of this all-star lineup. Together, they have created a timeless musical experience that celebrates the essence of the blues in the context of the irresistibly electrifying and enduring swing of Basie.

Just In Case... plus Holidays & Birthdays
|
"...Move over Rover, let me in, looks like I'm gonna be living in your doghouse again. Move over Rover, let me in, you're my best friend" ...Wynonie Harris
Birthdays upcoming:
Aug 17-Luther Allison (1939-1997), Mae West (1893-1980); Aug 19-Earl Gaines (1935-2009); Aug 20-Issac Hayes (1942-2008); Aug 21-Count Basie (1904-1984); Aug 22-John Lee Hooker (1920-2001), Debbie Davies (1952); Aug 24-Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (1905-1974), Wynonie Harris (1915-1969 pictured); Aug 25-Mr. Sipp aka Castro Coleman (1976); Aug 26-Jimmy Rushing (1901-1972); Aug 29-Charlie Parker (1920-1955), Dinah Washington (1924-1963); Aug 30-Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson (1934-1976); Aug 31-Joanna Connor (1962), Van Morrison (1945)
Just in case: August 26 is "National Dog Day"... well, we love dogs, man's best friend, faithful companion, etc., and while they truly can be a gift, they haven't always been necessarily complimented in the world of blues lyrics. Sure, we sympathize in "I wouldn't treat a dog the way you treated me," (Bobby Blue Bland), and Duke Robillard's "I'm Gonna Buy Me A Dog (To Take The Place of You," But what about, "you ain't nothing but a hound dog," (Big Mama Thornton) "I ain't gonna be your lowdown dog," (Big Joe Turner), "baby, let me be your salty dog" (Mississippi John Hurt), "I'm just like a mad dog, I snaps at everything I meet" ("Mad Dog Blues" Mary Butler/Walter Vinson), I'm foamin' at the mouth baby can't you see" (Mad Dog" Johnny Winter"), and "I don't want no watch dog, I wanna man right now" (Etta James "Watch Dog").... and yes, the list goes on!
