Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
Here is the talented guitarist, singer, songwriter and truly affable John Primer at the 2023 Blues Music Awards (BMA) in Memphis, Tennessee where he won "Traditional Blues Male Artist." He was also one of the featured performers at the ceremony.

Primer's musical journey includes a who's who of blues icons. Former bandleader and lead guitarist for Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and Magic Slim & The Teardrops, he's a multi-award-winning, GRAMMY Nominated legend.

You may have caught him at the Big Blues Bender this past weekend where Primer and his Real Deal Band laid down some real Chicago Blues.

Yes, my friends, John Primer IS the Real deal!

Tom Hambridge :: BLU JA VU
When you have a musical career as a singer and drummer that includes writing over 1000 songs, producing 100 albums, and working with everyone from Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley to Buddy Guy - two things come to mind. You must be exceptionally talented. You must be Tom Hambridge.

Hambridge is the four-time Grammy-winning whirlwind talent behind – among many other projects – three of blues legend Buddy Guy’s most critically acclaimed albums: Living Proof (2011), Born To Play Guitar (2016), The Blues Is Alive And Well (2018), Keb Mo’s Good To Be (2022) and for his work on rising blues star Christone “Kingfish” Ingram’s albums 662 (2022) and Kingfish (2020).

Hambridge has been such a prodigious creator and producer of music that Guy says of him: “Someone like that comes along only once in a lifetime. I call him the white Willie Dixon.”

But every once in a while, Hambridge takes time out to make an album just for himself. His latest, Blu Ja Vu, is the first since his 2018 The NOLA Sessions, a sparkling tribute to New Orleans music.

Blu Ja Vu is a look back at some of the songs Hambridge has written or co-written – usually with Richard Fleming – and produced for his musical friends. A few of them return the favor here, so it's bluesy déjà vu all over again.

Among the fine tracks is the hard-driving “Ain't It Just Like Love” with Buddy Guy, and Joe Bonamassa on “That's My Home.” Christone “Kingfish” Ingram is featured on “Blues Don't Care,” and “Brother John Boogie” is an instrumental featuring harmonica legend James Cotton (R.I.P.). “Meet Me In Chicago” is co-written by Robert Randolph.

If Blu Ja Vu shows us anything, it's that Tom Hambridge can be counted on to create great music … again … and again … and again.

Delmark’s 70th Anniversary All-Star Blues Revue

(EVANSTON, IL) - Chicago’s own Delmark Records, the oldest independent jazz and blues record label in the world, celebrates its 70th anniversary Sept 20 at Evanston SPACE Live Music Hall (1245 Chicago Ave.) in Evanston, Illinois.

An all-star blues revue will feature Bob Stroger, Mike Wheeler, Sheryl Youngblood, Dave Specter, and Tad Robinson.

Award winning bassist and vocalist Bob Stroger is still going strong at age 92 and continues to perform and tour the world behind his critically acclaimed Delmark release, That’s My Name.

Guitarist and vocalist Mike Wheeler represents a generation of contemporary blues artists who combine soul, funk and R&B into an exciting style of modern, high energy, urban blues.

Vocalist and drummer Sheryl Youngblood is a rising star on today’s Chicago scene and combines traditional blues with a touch of soul and R&B while lighting up the stage with her powerful and soulful vocals.

Rock & Roll and Blues Hall of Fame inductee Billy Boy Arnold is one of the newest members of the Delmark family. The vocalist and harmonica player recently released his autobiography, The Blues Dream of Billy Boy Arnold, and will also be on hand to autograph copies.

Guitarist and vocalist Dave Specter signed to Delmark in 1990 and recently released a double album, Six String Soul, celebrating his 30 years of recordings on the label. Specter appears on dozens of Delmark recordings as a guitarist, producer and bandleader.

From his NYC roots and Indiana and Chicago musical upbringing, guest vocalist and harp ace Tad Robinson is one of the leading voices of modern soul-blues music.

Also featured on the show are Roosevelt Purifoy on keys, Larry Williams on bass and Pooky Styx on drums.

5 Younger Musicians Keeping The Blues Alive
If the blues in the 21st century conjures suburban sports bar nightmares, it's time to wake up: these five younger bluesbreakers keep the flame burning.

Does blues-based music have a certain agelessness?

Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, the early Beatles and Stones — all of them, and so many more — seemingly walked out of this primordial soup and flipped the world on its head. At their peak, their songs could have been written this morning.

But timelessness can be a double-edged sword. While the parameters of 12 bars has been a launchpad for innovation and imagination, it can also stymie and bind.

Most of us know the shadow side of the issue: pentatonic scales and pitch harmonics, laboriously picked out in the suburban sports bars of America. God bless, but it's difficult to imagine that's keeping the blues alive, per se. Negative associations with the genre can even wall it off from youthful possibilities.

If the utterance of the b-word conjures visions of scrunch-faced dads, let's unwind them. In the 21st century, younger folks are excellent stewards of this music; GRAMMY.com [via author Morgan Enos] takes a quick tour through five of such bluesbreakers: Marquise Knox, Marcus King, Ally Venable, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Buffalo Nichols

Just in case: Sept 15th is "National Felt Hat Day" celebrated to honor the rich history of hats. Oh yeh, it also marks a shift in the weather. But how many cool hats have we seen worn by blues musicians over generations whether cold or hot?! Whether and everyday thang or a performance thang, hats are definitely, and no doubt always will be, an integral part of music and arts culture.

Saturday September 16 is "National Dance Day!" I love to dance. Dancing is not only an artistic outlet, it improves our emotional and mental health as well. And let's face it, sometimes you just can't help yourself when the music moves you! It's spontaneity at it's best. There are certainly a lot of chances to dance to blues-type music. Interpret the mood and tempo of the music with your body and open yourself up to creativity when you start moving to the beat. No need to hesitate if you're feeling it... just go ahead and dance like nobody's watching... seriously. It's about you! Let the music move you... literally. Dance in your seat or dance on your feet!
