Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
Multi-award winning Bob Corritore (rt) had his big birthday bash at his popular Rhythm Room in Phoenix, Arizona last weekend.

Among the special guests was Vizztone recording artist Jimi "Primetime" Smith (lt) who teams up from time to time with Corritore.

Raised in Chicago (like Bob) in a musical family, Smith learned and found his style at very young age thanks to mentors Jimmy Reed, Hubert Sumlin and Eddie Taylor. At age 17-18 he was already performing with many of the Chicago greats. He relocated to Minnesota making a name for himself there as well. The award-winning artist has backed up such artists as Etta James, Albert King, Otis Rush, and Albert Collins.

"Blues, Roots & Hoots" includes premiere entertainers
(FISH CREEK, WI) – The “Blues, Roots & Hoots” series is held at the Door Community Auditorium (DCA), 3926 Hwy 42 in Fish Creek, Wisconsin.

Saturday, Oct 28th, DCA presents “Memphis & Door County Voices: Sister Rosetta Tharpe & Beyond.”

Premiere Memphis vocalists Susan Marshall and Reba Russell share the stage with Sturgeon Bay’s blues powerhouse Cathy Grier and Chicago-based actress, singer, writer, Lachrisa Grandberry to honor the songs and spirit of the legendary rock-gospel guitarist and singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Showtime is 7pm. Tickets $30 and $10 for students 18 & under.

Nov 4th, DCA presents Lizz Wright & Bobby Rush.

Georgia native and highly acclaimed vocalist Lizz Wright sanctifies first gained attention delivering Swing Era standards associated with Billie Holiday. She's continued as a singer and songwriter whose music eludes definition.

Two-time Grammy winning Blues Hall of Famer Bobby Rush is one of the preeminent bluesmen in the world. At 89 years old, he's one of the last living links to the music’s glorious past, and an inspiration for its future stars. Showtime is 7pm. Tickets $35- 58 and $15 for students 18 & under.

Blues is the root of all music; it’s the mother of all music. If you don’t like the blues, you probably don’t like your mama.” – Bobby Rush.
Highmark Blues & Heritage Festival presents Bobby Rush and Eric Gales Nov 3
(PITTSBURGH, PA) - The Highmark Blues & Heritage Festival presents Bobby Rush and Eric Gales on November 3 at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, 980 Liberty Ave. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Doors open 7pm Showtime 8pm.

In addition to two Grammy wins (and six nominations), singer, songwriter, entertainer Bobby Rush is in the Blues Hall of Fame, has won 16 Blues Music Awards (among 56 nominations), and there’s currently a musical in development called Slippin’ Through The Cracks with sights on Broadway. “I joke and talk about sex in a way that people can understand," says Rush. "I’m all for lifting it up, because if it wasn’t for sex, none of us would be here..."

Guitarist, singer, songwriter Eric Gales is a blues firebrand. Over 30 years and 18 albums, his passion for the music and his boundless desire to keep it vital has never waned. As both an African-American left-handed guitarist of extraordinary ability and an expressive vocalist, it is natural for people to compare Eric to Hendrix. But Eric has developed a unique hybrid blues/rock sound that also draws upon influences as diverse as Albert King and Frank Gambale.

The Highmark Blues & Heritage Festival (HBHF) motto and mission is about hope, roots, and the connections that music makes across races, neighborhoods, and beliefs. The August Wilson African American Cultural Center celebrates that diversity and hope that you will join them, hoping for a more humane today, and a brighter tomorrow.

Little G Weevil :: IF I MAY
One of Eastern Europe’s favorite artists carrying the torch of traditional blues is Hungarian bluesman Little G Weevil. The singer, songwriter, guitarist made many a long pilgrimage to America to study and immerse himself in the artform at its source in Atlanta, St. Louis, and Memphis, where he worked as a dishwasher in a club on Beale Street just to be close to the action. Little G won the International Blues Challenge in 2013 as a solo act, tours internationally and has recorded eight albums.

His latest, If I May, is a collection of ten original compositions that run the gamut of blues, jazz, swing, and ragtime. His devotion to authenticity is matched with creative lyricism that presents timely topics and modern jargon over timeless musical forms. Joining Little G at Sounday Studio in Budapest, Hungary are drummer Tom Kiss, piano man Mr. Jambalaya, Csaba Pengo on upright bass, and K.C. Brown on harmonica, with producer, engineer Gabor Vastag adding backup vocals.

The set opens with a Chicago Blues rocker, then onto a reflection on current events featuring barrelhouse piano and a loose swinging New Orleans parade beat. Little G then seeks redemption on a rumbling blues, updates an old song vignette, then dives into a straight-ahead blues.

He gives a voice to those who would rise up against their oppressors with an evocative mixture of a Hill Country meets Mali and Delta trance aesthetics. A Basin Street rhumba bemoans the plight of African workers toiling for the white man’s treasure, and he lambastes modern education in the age of the internet on a tongue-in-cheek two-beat. The rebuke continues in a rolling slow blues expressing his fears for our world. Little G ends the set with a percolating blues that cooks up a convincing love potion.

“I was always a very commanding person on the stage — If it ain’t right, you better fix it. I was tough back in the young days. Get the hell off my stage! What the hell was that note? I did that for years but I learned to get along.”"

Just in case: "Kids Music Day" is the first Friday of October, which is October 6 this year... a day to inspire kids to assimilate music into their lives.

This brings to mind the various interactive Blues In The Schools programs held around the country. There are also global youth blues music camps (photo above was taken at the Blues Lovers United San Diego Summer Youth Blues Camp finale concert).

I'm a huge fan of also repurposing items to use as musical instruments. An empty bucket becomes a drum, empty plastic jars with beans, rice, pebbles, etc. in them become a shaker, and so on. The biggest thing about music to me is it gets kids moving and creating and interacting, while building confidence and motor skills... i.e. rhythm.

Encourage kids to write a song. There's not much that's more gratifying then seeing the smile of a child that gets to participate at any level with music. Making, playing, or even listening to music has solid academic and social benefits, especially for kids. It uplifts the mood, alleviates stress, and promotes mindful concentration.

Yep, music is a natural healer!
