1st Annual Mississippi Township Blues Festival to celebrate with renowned artists
(RIDGELAND, MS) - The first Township Blues Festival happens Saturday, November 11, at the Township at Colony Park in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Featuring live music from renowned blues musicians and bands, the festival is bringing an afternoon full of rocking fun to the Capital area. The lineup includes performances by Brandon “Taz” Niederauer, Cedric Burnside, Ghost Town Blues Band, Jarekus Singleton, and Jimmy “Duck” Holmes. The festival kicks off at 3pm.

“We’re thrilled to be announcing an incredible lineup for our first annual Township Blues Festival at the Township at Colony Park in Ridgeland,” said festival organizer Richard Greenlee. “Our goal is to create a new yearly event that celebrates blues music in the birthplace of the blues - Mississippi. With this lineup, we’re excited to offer music fans in the area a unique opportunity to enjoy an outstanding show from some of the premiere blues acts out there.”

The Township Blues Festival is the newest festival among a history of successful events to be held at The Township at Colony Park. The Township is a master-planned, mixed-use neighborhood in the heart of a vibrant yet quaint community in Ridgeland, Mississippi.

Attendees will be able to enjoy world-class blues acts with various food vendors and cold refreshments. Attendees are welcome to bring blankets and lawn chairs and college football fans will have an exclusive gameday zone to watch their favorite teams play while at the festival.

For tickets and more information and a hotel special, visit the festival website

The Township Blues Festival is presented by Wratchet Entertainment Group and brought to you in part by Visit Ridgeland and Southern Beverage Company. This project is partially funded by a grant through Visit Mississippi.
35th Annual Battle of the Blues Harps Thanksgiving Eve
(LONG BEACH, CA) The 35th Annual Battle of the Blues Harps is coming to the Gaslamp Long Beach, 6251 E. Pacific Coast Hwy, Long Beach, California on Thanksgiving Eve, Nov 22. Showtime is 7pm-12:30am and doors open at 6pm. There's free parking, a tasty menu, full bar, and a dance area.

On this 35th anniversary extravaganza, they will delve into some early West Coast Blues for a special tribute to the legendary Hollywood Fats Band. Featuring original band members Al Blake and Fred Kaplan, they have also added sterling players Kid Ramos, Rena Beavers, Mike Turturro and more.

Returning is the iconic harp Meister, Rod Piazza, who will be performing with Carl Sonny Leyland, Nathan James and Troy Sandow, among others.

The rarely seen Blue Shadows were built from the Blasters' rhythm section of Bill Bateman and Johnny Bazz, with Javier Matos supplying guitar and vocals and Jack Rudy playing harp on their soulful, raw and in-your-face original music.

The Mighty Mojo Prophets have a long SoCal history of making the best in west coast blues, so it is fitting that the band, with founding members Tommy Eliff and Mitch Dow, be featured on this 35th anniversary show. Dave Deforest, Mike Malone, Granville Ames Beals and Ron Felton will also appear.

Opening this amazing anniversary show are Billy Watson and Robin Henkel, two award-winning artists who will collaborate starting at 7pm.

This is a ticketed, seated show and reservations are recommended as there may be no tickets left at the door. The show is 18+.

Golden Sails Hotel is right next door. Call 562-594-0210 during business hours (only) to check for a special rate.
6th Annual Reading Blues Fest Nov 15-19
(READING, PA) - The annual Reading Blues Fest will take place in the DoubleTree in Reading, Pennsylvania. Festivalgoers can relax in the friendly atmosphere of the award-winning hotel enjoying music, blues-themed lunches and brunches, and more. Ticket options include all-inclusive VIP packages, or individual concerts.

Acts include Jimmy Vivino; guitar legend Arlen Roth and his band in a “Super Soul Session” featuring Hammond B3 artist Bruce Katz, vocalist Makamuri and The Berks Horns; the award-winning Ruthie Foster; J.P. Soars’ Gypsy Blue Revue, featuring vocalist, violinist Anne Harris; Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials; Mr. Sipp & The True Believers featuring special guest, the Fresh Wind Gospel Ensemble; and Kevin Burt.

Festivities start Friday 5:30pm with a “Welcome Party” featuring Kevin Burt in the hotel’s Cheers American Bistro. Burt will also appear with his band – Big Medicine – opening for Ruthie Foster Saturday night.

In addition, there will be concerts in more intimate venues by harmonica master Steve Guyger & The Excellos, the Dave Keller Band, Dave Keyes (the “King of Keys”), and the James Supra Trio featuring Sarah Ayers and Phil Pilorz.
Two special events will be held in the DoubleTree Amphitheater: an RMF Guitar Workshop hosted by Dave Kline and Arlen Roth on Saturday afternoon, and “Meet the Artists” hosted by Michael Cloeren on Sunday morning.

There will also be a community concert Wednesday, Nov 15 at the Reading Liederkranz. “Blues on the Mountain,” presented by Mt. Penn Preservation, will feature the Mikey Junior Band and opener Busker Incognito & THE SHOW.
Friday, Nov 17, there’s a Kickoff Lunch at the Peanut Bar Restaurant in downtown Reading, with The Bluesmasters (aka The Groovemasters). Sat Nov 18, the Peanut Bar hosts a Blues Dinner with the Dave Mell Blues Band.

Chris Yakopcic :: LIVE AT THE HIDDEN GEM
Fingerstyle acoustic blues guitarist, singer-songwriter and instructor Chris Yakopcic has been playing the circuit of bars, cafés and listening rooms for over a decade. His third album, Live At The Hidden Gem, recorded in one special evening at the Dayton Ohio music club, captures master craftsman Yakopcic at his finest; delivering award-winning pre-war Delta and Piedmont Blues inspired by his heroes Robert Johnson, Bill Broonzy, Blind Blake and more. The twelve-song set is an even split of originals and cover songs, each showcasing his jaw dropping talent at rhythmic, high-energy thumb-bass picking guitar patterns and sweeping dynamics that accompany his homespun sincere vocal stylings.

Yakopcic opens with his jaunty tune “Gotta Get Goodbye Somehow.” He then delivers a deft reading of Blake’s “Chump Man Blues” from 1929. The funky “When It All Goes Wrong At Once” has a fast-moving groove. He digs deep into Robert Johnson’s 1937 Delta Blues cornerstone “Traveling Riverside Blues.”  “The Hangover” is a delicately picked shuffle. He takes Leonard Cohen’s statement about the songwriting craft “Tower Of Song,” and transforms it into a frenzy of bluegrass licks and tongue twisting vocal phrases.

An affectionate reading of “Kind Hearted Woman” further reflects Yako’s devotion to the art of the Delta Blues. His National Trojan Roundneck Resonator Guitar sings like a gospel choir on “Sounds Of The Highway.” Yakopcic elevates the “hammer on” guitar technique on his brisk remake of Tom Waits’ rumbling train song “2:19,” and the slinky “Sweet Time Blues” pays tribute to the maker with a sampling of St. Louis Blues. The heartfelt ballad “My Last Three Strings,” is followed by “Preachin’ Blues,” with Yako playing lead and rhythm all at once and revving up the Robert Johnson standard for a pyrotechnic finale.

"Antone’s is my foundation. I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing if it hadn’t been for Antone’s. It allowed me to experiment, explore, and try to better myself as a musician. I was fortunate enough to hear stories and history from Pinetop Perkins and James Cotton. Everything felt so justified. It all made sense when I was at Antone’s." ... Gary Clark Jr.

Just in case: October 25th is "International Artist Day."
Art is a creative human expression.

Art portrays the beauty of life or a bitter reality. It records history, revolutions, rebellions, and sometimes is a means to escape them. In short, there is no history or culture without art.

This day celebrates all forms of art — paintings, sculpture, photography, architecture, music, and more. Amen!
(pictured: Telluride Blues Fest 2021 poster by Rob Gonzo)

The evening of October 26th is "Worldwide Howl at the Moon Night." While this is a day to let your inner howl out for real, it's actually also associated with animal welfare, specifically that of the wolf, the non-domesticated defender of the wild.

Either way, you can be a lone wolf or get your pack together, and while the moon may be in it's "waxing crescent" phase that night, go ahead and let it all out when that sliver of moon presents itself!
