Alki UCC Weekly Messenger November 2, 2023
From the Music Director
Dear Alki UCC,

There is a verse from the hymn "For All the Saints" that has been on my mind this week: "Ringed by this cloud of witnesses divine, we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet in your love our faithful lives entwine. Alleluia!"

In an ode to the saints, this verse reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles. Among all the saints ringed around us are the faces of our loved ones who've gone to join the glory; those we hold in our hearts, but also whose wisdom and character we try daily to emulate.

We rejoice in knowing that, by God's love, our lives are eternally entwined. — Stephen

Joe Mitter writes:
Stephen, Rev. Penny, the Worship and Music ministry team, the Alki UCC choir and I have collaborated to create this Sunday's service featuring additional special music and extra congregational hymns while Pastor Emily is out of town in celebration of her birthday.

So bring your voices and your energy, as we remind each other that no one is alone!.
Invitation to Send Names of Departed Loved Ones to Commemorate during Worship
For worship this Sunday we join faith communities around the world in observance of All Saints Day, a service of remembrance for recognized saints as well as those who have passed and are still in our hearts.

If you would like to add anyone to our commemoration, please email their names to the church office by noon tomorrow (Friday, November 3) so their names can be read aloud during worship.

There will also be an opportunity to submit names during worship.

Share your ideas this Sunday after worship!

Are you interested in helping decorate, create and design a unique Christmas tree that reflects Alki UCC? Please gather in the parlor at Sunday's post-worship coffee hour as we take the first step in organizing an Alki UCC Tree Design Team to create a holiday tree for display at Fauntleroy UCC’s Festival of Trees!

Did I mention this is a competition and votes are counted by the amount of food donated to each tree?

Bring your holiday thinking caps to the parlor after church Sunday and let's make a plan. Questions: Alyson H

Can We Talk About Israel:
A Guide for the Curious, Confused & Conflicted
by Daniel Sokatch

The folks at KHN recommend this book as an excellent resource to help give context to events currently unfolding in Israel, Palestine and throughout the Middle East.

From the KHN newsletter:
Do you ever feel unable to enter conversations about Israel and Palestine? Do you feel left behind or overwhelmed by the intensity of opinions and rhetoric when the topic of Israel is raised? Does this intensity make it feel hard to organize your own thoughts and feelings, or to reach out to others?

This book is for anyone who wants to talk and think about Israel and Palestine but suspect they are missing key elements of context, history, vocabulary or subtext.
