Blues Cruisin'...
Reveling in cruise memories..
Hi again blues friends!

Well, it may go without saying that I had memorable, music-filled adventure on the recent Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise #39 (LRBC) from San Diego to the Mexican Riviera with ports in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. A true family of old and new blues friends!

I overheard many said this was their favorite cruise. It's hard to not think a lot of cruisers feel this way each time, but I admit there was a special level of camaraderie among the cruisers, the uber-talent, was well as the friendly staff. And the performing artists were just beaming — you could tell they were really enjoying themselves.

There were so many enthusiastic, younger artists performing onboard overall, it was exciting and encouraging to see and hear... the blues is in good hands! I spent a little more time at the Billboard Lounge aka the piano bar this time, and I made it to the Soul Lounge the last night (mainly because it started earlier than usual).

I personally love the theme nights and dressing up and seeing what people come up with. I took a lot of photos over the week and will be putting an album up on Facebook, etc. Myself and a few friends also took captured folks with the magazine over the week, which I'll be sharing over time here in the e-Guide. I really have fun doing this as it's a fun, extra way to greet the artists and blues fans.

I'm still unpacking mainly costume stuff and also recuperating a little (maybe from lack of sleep and "dining" too much! HA!). But basically, I'm trying to concentrate while still reveling in that distinct high that is the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.

Onward & upward... your E-Guide Editor,
Michele Lundeen aka the "Queen of Steam"

Kirk Fletcher Fundraiser Auction ends Nov 12
Joe Bonamassa has helped launch a fundraiser in support of fellow blues guitar virtuoso Kirk Fletcher. Fletcher has been struggling with medical issues recently after suffering a stroke onstage during a performance at Tennessee’s Eastside Bowl in July.

To support Fletcher and help offset the burden of his medical bills and living expenses, Bonamassa and his Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation have sponsored a fundraiser auction, which will see the sale of a bumper gear package.

The auction is currently live with a highest bid of $15,400. The fundraiser will run until 11:59pm EST on November 12. The auction page also gives fans the opportunity to pledge one-off donations of any amount to support Fletcher.

Kirk has built a strong reputation for his soulful and versatile guitar playing - drawing influence from a variety of Blues styles. In addition, he has gained massive recognition for his exceptional skill, tone, and versatility. Some of his collaborations include The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Charlie Musselwhite, and Joe Bonamassa just to name a few.
Smokestack Lightnin’ Nov 18-19
(LOS ANGELES, CA) - Taking its name from the Howlin’ Wolf classic, Smokestack Lightnin’ is Los Angeles’s inaugural indie blues and retro soul music festival. It's a festival atmosphere in a club setting, with authentic food, craft beer, vinyl vendors and a 2nd stage with up and comers and local scene favorites.

The cross-pollination of blues and soul has served as the foundation from everything from hip hop to rock to jazz. Much like California itself, the festival is inspired by forward thinking artists, unafraid to take roots music to new places. With a lineup curated for cross generational appeal, our mission is to engage and grow the audience of boundary pushing roots music in LA.

Headliners performing Saturday, November 18th are The Record Company, GA-20, Sugaray Rayford, Nicky Egan, and Duane Betts.

Headliners performing Sunday, November 19th are North Mississippi Allstars, Cedric Burnside, Vicky Tafoya, Sam Morrow.

The Regent Theater is located at 448 S Main Street. The Regent is a cashless venue. This event will happen rain or shine. Doors 5pm and showtime 6pm. Tickets and more details can be found here.
Blues Alive Festival in Czech Republic Nov 16-18
(ŠUMPERK, CZECH REPUBLIC) - For more than a quarter of a century the Blues Alive Festival, held in Šumperk, Czech Republic, has been promoting authentic blues performed by living legends, current stars and fresh discoveries from around the world.

The festival program consists of the main concerts on 2 stages (House of Culture and Jam Stage), an afternoon concert on the Jam Stage on Friday, concerts in the monastery church, a Saturday afternoon concert on the main stage, a Saturday film screening in the Oko cinema, lectures, exhibitions and music workshops.

Along with over two dozen acts, headliners include G. Love & Special Sauce, Robert Finley, Tommy Castro & The Painkillers, Alvin Youngblood Hart's Muscle Theory, Bernard Allison, Chicago Blues Festival Feat. Marquise Knox, Dexter Allen, and Lady A.

Blues Alive Festival is a proud recipient of the 2019 Keeping The Blues Alive award presented by The Blues Foundation in Memphis.

A Visual Storytelling Celebration of American Roots Music
Down Home Music: The Stories and Photographs of Chris Strachwitz will be published by Chronicle Books on November 14th. The long-awaited book features over 150 of Chris's best black-and-white photographs, captions in his own unique voice, and a comprehensive essay by award-winning music journalist Joel Selvin.

A visual storytelling celebration of American roots music in its rich variety through unseen and newly scanned photographs, Down Home Music is an extraordinary document of Arhoolie Records and Chris Strachwitz's search for the musical heart of America. From the very beginning, Chris brought his camera along with recording equipment as he met and recorded now-legendary artists such as Lightnin' Hopkins, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Clifton Chenier, and Big Joe Williams. The book collects more than 150 of his most intimate and exciting images, many never seen before.

The book was Chris's last passion project and we couldn't be more honored or excited to share it with the world. It's a must-have for fans of American roots music, including blues, folk, Cajun, Creole, zydeco, and Mexican border music, as well as for collectors of music history, American cultural history, Black history, and music photography books.

Follow this link to learn more about Down Home Music and preorder your copy from Chronicle Books.

Just in case: "National Hug a Musician Day" is November 13. A lot of work goes into being a musician, and not everyone is aware of the dedication. I bet you know a musician who spends hours practicing and hours a night playing at bars, clubs, and concerts... maybe even on the corner or the park!

Well, go ahead and envelop them in a big ol’ loving hug and let them know they’re appreciated. Well, at least a fist bump if you prefer... that counts as a hug these days, too.

Here's Kevin Burt and Chris Cain sharing a hug aboard the LRBC.

We are all family!

It's also "National Drummers Day" Nov 15th! Did you know drums first appeared in 5050 BC? Drums are messengers... and they also can solidify the foundation of a song.

There are so many great ones we could list here past and present but just some current ones of note include should Tony Braunagel, Derrick D'Mar Martin, June Core (pictured at right jamming on the recent LRBC), Kenny "Beedy Eyes" Smith, Tom Hambridge, Bernard Purdie, Cedric Burnside, Jimi Bott, Cody Dickinson, Chris Layton

I bet you're thinking of a variety of musicians now you'd like to hug, fist bump or just simply give thanks to! Go for it!
