South Orange Int'l Blues Festival 1st Winter Edition
(SOUTH ORANGE, NJ) - New York City-based Blues guitarist Popa Chubby joins forces with Asbury Park Music Awards winner Billy Hector and North Jersey’s 2023 International Blues Challenge winners Blues People for three hours of Blues on the SOPAC Mainstage, Saturday, January 27 at 7:30pm. The South Orange International Blues Festival Winter Edition will be held at SOPAC (South Orange Performing Arts Center), One SOPAC Way, in South Orange, New Jersey.

Throughout his almost 30-year career, Popa Chubby has developed a unique style that he describes as “the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motorhead meets Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson.” Billy Hector has 14 albums to his name and has been praised as “A New Jersey state treasure” by New Jersey Stage. Blues People, led by SOPAC Creative Community Brain Trust Music member Mike Griot, is a SOMA staple perfecting the New York Blues’ edgy, honest, and one-of-a-kind sound.

“I am happy to announce the return of “the greatest Blues reunion in NJ”—and invite you all to a historic music event celebrating our beloved South Orange International Blues Festival— in its first Winter Edition,” exclaims Groit.
“It’s truly exciting for me to team up with SOPAC and (once again) present world-class Blues artists… connect with friends and family… and meet at a beautiful venue in the town where it all started 13 years ago!”

Don’t miss this historic reunion concert featuring the best of Mike Griot’s legendary South Orange International Blues Festival at SOPAC. Tickets are $25, in advance or $35, at the door.
Backstory on CBS’ “Blues revival in Mississippi Delta” special
From Roger Stolle at Cathead:
“The long-running CBS TV news program, 60 Minutes, ran major features on Clarksdale blues and Christone "Kingfish" Ingram in October, putting Mississippi blues in millions of living rooms.

Musicians and personalities shown or interviewed included Super Chikan, Kingfish, Big T, Big A, Ghalia Volt, Sean "Bad" Apple, Morgan Freeman and more. Producer David Levine worked on the feature for a year and a half — first filming at 2022 Juke Joint Festival and then returning with the on-screen correspondent to complete the main interviews.

I truly enjoyed working with David and his crack team of professionals behind the scenes (from JJF recommendations to artist contacts, from location suggestions to fact checking) and was really looking forward to my on-screen interview (to discuss Clarksdale's bigger picture of maximizing blues music and history to fuel downtown redevelopment, etc.).

Unfortunately, when the show returned a year ago November to do the correspondent interviews… wait for it… yup, I had Covid. Ha! Well, as I like to say, Morgan and Christone handled things for me instead (not really). In all seriousness, it was a great (and I would say pretty-well-balanced) piece re: the center of the blues universe and our 20 years of marching steadily into a better future for locals and visitors alike.”

Jason Ricci and The Bad Kind :: BEHIND THE VEIL
Behind the Veil is the solo label debut on Gulf Coast Records from New Orleans-based harmonica master Jason Ricci and his band, The Bad Kind. The album was produced by Jason Ricci and Tony Daigle and recorded at Dockside Studio, Maurice, Louisiana.  The band is Jason Ricci - diatonic and chord harmonica, vocals, and backup vocals; Ricci’s wife Kaitlin Dibble - vocals and backup vocals; Brent Johnson - guitar and backup vocals; Jack Joshua - double bass, electric bass, vocals, and backup vocals; and John Perkins - drums and backup vocals. Special guests include Joe Krown - piano and Hammond B3 organ (tracks 2, 8, 12); Gulf Coast labelmate Joanna Connor - guitar (track 10) and Lauren Mitchell - backup vocals.

Three singles were released ahead of the 12-track album drop. “5-10-15,” Ricci explains, “was actually the song that made me want to record this CD… I love the New Orleans R&B feel and I really think we captured it here thanks to Tony Daigle, Kid Andersen and the band, of course. The whole reason we recorded this CD live in one room was centered around this number.”

“St James Infirmary” was second. “This old standard is almost the ‘Mustang Sally’ of New Orleans music so if I didn't think we had something really special here I would have never let it on stage - much more this record.”

One of the album's originals, “Why Don’t We Sleep On It,” came from when “Kate and I were having a rare argument,” says Ricci, “and the band was in need of some more music. So I sat down to write a tune about how much better I would be doing without her and then kept hearing her voice or my own telling me the truth or her side... So I wrote both our parts; she loved it; we made up and had this fun duet.“

Dec 8th "Pretend to Be A Time Traveler Day"
Okay, I know that might sound silly, but honestly, if you could move across the time, where would you want to go and who would you want to meet?

Maybe visit a long forgotten juke joint or go back in the day when you could experience an artist you dig that was still alive and playing there? Or just sit and have a simple conversation?
