Legendary reggae bassist Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett has died
Legendary reggae bassist, Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett has passed away.

From @thewailers IG page: With the heaviest of hearts, we share the news of the passing of our beloved Aston "Familyman" Barrett after a long medical battle. This morning, the world lost not just an iconic musician and the backbone of The Wailers but a remarkable human being whose legacy is as immense as his talent. Our family is asking for privacy during this challenging time, as words cannot express our profound loss.
Aston Barrett was the original bassist for Bob Marley and The Wailers, a pioneer, a mentor, and most importantly, a true family man. His contributions to music were recognized with multiple honors:

- In 2012, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Bass Player Magazine.
- In 2020, he was selected as the number-one bassist by the staff of Bass Player Magazine, in their ranking of "20 legendary players who shaped the sound of electric bass."
- In 2021, he was honored with the Order of Distinction (Commander class) in the National Honours and Awards on Jamaica’s 59th Anniversary of Independence.

Aston's music brought joy to millions, and his influence on reggae is beyond measure. He was a man of few words, but his words carried wisdom, kindness, and love. His bass lines were not just the foundation of The Wailers' music but the heartbeat of a genre that has touched hearts around the globe.

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has been part of the journey with us. Your love, support, and kind words have been a source of strength during this difficult time. Let us remember Familyman for the legend he was and the incredible memories he has given us. In his own words, "The older the moon, the brighter it shines," a reminder of the enduring light he shared with us all, shining brighter with each passing day.
Rest in peace, Familyman.

Your legacy will live on forever in our hearts and through the music you've left us. We love you and will miss you deeply.

ANUE NAHKI - talented young conscious artist from JA- Available for booking - Listen HERE
Click Here to Listen to Anue Nahki Music

Anue Nahki is best described as a young independent artiste with modernized youthful delivery. He understands the power of positive influence and how it impacts society. He has combined the art of roots and DJ into a modernized art form reminiscent of early dancehall, yet evolved into a style embraced by the Caribbean youth of today.

"I am a singer and deejay but my music is different in the sense that it's not straight dancehall or reggae. It's a blend of all the music that I've been exposed to as a young man who grew up in the Caribbean. It also embraces the philosophy and teachings of Emperor Haile Selassie and Marcus Garvey."

"Our people need positive music to lead them out of darkness. Change starts with every individual doing the right thing. Playing the right music and singing uplifting messages leads to a greater consciousness and ahigher depth of spirituality.” ~ Anue Nahki

Drawing from ancient Rastafari wisdom, Anue Nahki holds fast to his childhood upbringing. Hailing from the Parish of St. Mary, Jamaica, he was born to Rastafarian parents, Stephen Chin and Charmaine Watson. Their inspiration guided Anue to recognize the importance of Rastafari livity, not only as a life practice but also as a societal remedy. Because of his deeply spiritual commitment to truth and righteousness, Anue has emerged as one of the most crucial young artists in Jamaica, blending the sounds of Ancient Africa with the uplifting rhythms of Caribbean roots. His energy and message are infectious.

Inspired by Bob Marley, Lee Scratch Perry, and the productions of Studio One, Anue Nahki attended university in Kingston. At age 20, he registered his own record label Future Youth Productions. In Kingston, he also spent time at Edna Manley School for the Visual and Performing Arts where he found himself in the same environment as Chronixx, Protoje, Jesse Royal and Raging Fyah. The torch was lit.

Paapa Wastik's new single "BEYOND THE BUS" a song livicated to Rosa Parks
HEIGHTS UP MUSIC AND CREATIVE AGENCY, LLC PRESENTS...Ghana's 🇬🇭 International

Reggae artist Paapa Wastik Kickstarting 2024 with a new single "BEYOND THE BUS" a song livicated to Rosa Parks

Click the link to stream/download BEYOND THE BUS (Queen Mother Rosa)

This commerative song was inspired and penned in honor of renowned African American civil rights activist Mrs. Rosa Parks. It was released on February 4th, 2024, which also coincided with the celebration of her 111th birthday.

In an interview with Paapa Wastik, he described how important and special this project is to him. He expressed that Rosa Parks has been one of his inspirations because of her bravery in championing for the fundamental rights of Black people. With a spirit of curiosity he sought out more information about Mrs. Parks, which landed him at the American Library of Congress. There he connected with a research team that consisted of librarian and archivest Luis Clavell who is the program manager of the "Rosa Parks collection"; and Diem Jones the vice president of Institute for Community Evolution.

In a research reasoning, Clavell enthusiastically shared, in great detail, about Parks' revolutionary efforts in the Black community. She is known as the Mother of the Civil Rights movement after her strategic arrest that launched the Alabama Montgomery bus boycott in 1955.

Upon learning about her extensive contributions to the well-being and self-determination of Black people, Wastik stated that he was, "ever inspired and found it fitting to tell a different side of her story since most people just know about the bus." He also wanted to emphasize her worthy contribution
to Black African liberation.

The 2024 staging of Wickie Wackie Music Festival on February 17 will serve as a homecoming for Grammy-nominated reggae band Raging Fyah, who will reunite on stage in Jamaica for the first time in six years.

Be sure to grab your tickets before they are sold out!

The last time the band performed together in Jamaica was at the 2017 staging of Wickie Wackie Music Festival, the same year that the band was nominated for a Grammy award for their third album Everlasting.

In 2018, lead singer Kumar Bent left the band to concentrate on a solo career. He said the “brief separation” was as a result of “stress on the brain. “We were a unit that was broken by business, I think. We were under a lot of pressure after that Grammy nomination … we weren’t seeing eye-to-eye on a lot of things. So I left. I needed that time for myself,” Bent told Caribbean National Weekly.

But when Courtland “Gizmo” White, the band’s guitarist, died in January last year, it motivated the original members of the band to come together as a unit once again, as per their fans’ many requests.
“Love is what brought us back together. … We all have our differences and people can complain all they want, but can you love your brother? If you can’t love your brother then it doesn’t make sense,” he said.

Preserving roots reggae in these times
Since its inception, the Wickie Wackie Music Festival has been a celebration of authentic roots reggae culture and has served as a platform for reggae revival musicians, particularly those up-and-coming.
Raging Fyah got its start at Wickie Wackie, Bull Bay, in the backyard of legendary Jamaican sound system builder Ronald ‘Uncle Ronnie’ Jarrett. Other reggae stars such as Chronixx, Koffee, Jah9, and more had their first major performance at the music festival. It’s a rewarding feeling, Bent said, to watch many of the festival’s past acts go on to dominate on the world stage.

Another aim of the festival is to preserve roots reggae and to also ensure that Rastafarian culture remains at the center of the genre. “At my event, I have drummers from Bobo Hill coming to do a chant, and we’ll have a bonfire on the beach. Those things are important to create the energy that we need to be pushing. You can’t serve two masters so if you’re rushing positive energy and roots reggae, you can’t dilute the music just because you want more people to come,” Bent said.

Bent considers it his purpose to preserve roots reggae and finds joy in doing so. “Most people say how reggae is dead and this and that. It’s not for everybody. I’m happy when even one person says that appreciate what we’re doing,” Bent said.

Third World’s Cat Coore, Jah Mason, and Jah Izhrel are billed to perform, along with sound systems 8 Mile Sound, Kingston Dub Club, and Sound Quake. Surprise reggae acts are also expected to hit the stage during Raging Fyah’s set.

Be sure to grab your tickets before they are sold out!

If you wish (and we really wish you wouldn't) like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.

It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows or music.
