Alki UCC Weekly Messenger April 11, 2024
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

Easter joy cannot be contained! It is not merely one Sunday in the church year, but a whole season that lasts seven Sundays.

Eastertide is an opportunity to be awake to resurrection and new life in our midst. This Sunday we will encounter the post-resurrected Jesus when he appeared among his disciples, asked for something to eat and opened their minds to the Scriptures, to resurrection.

He told them: “You are witnesses to these things.” How might we be witnesses to Christ among us? How might we be open to new life?

From Jan Richardson’s poem,
“In the Breath, Another Breathing”
from Circle of Grace: A Book of Blessings for the Seasons

Let it be
we will not
try to fathom what comes
to meet us
in the stillness
but simply open
to the approach
of a mystery
we hardly dared
to dream.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

Pastor Emily's Assessment of Ministry (Annual Review)
From the National UCC A Sure Foundation:
Because ministry never happens in isolation, and because effective ministry is responsive both to the Spirit’s prompting and to the needs of the congregation, regular assessment of ministry is a critical element to developing and maintaining healthy, thriving congregations and healthy, growing leaders.

Your voice is needed to help evaluate and celebrate Pastor's Emily time with us. As we begin our discernment, we are fully invested in her success as well as the success of Alki UCC.

What reflections can you share about her call as a pastor thus far? What more can we do together to support her and the growth of our faith community?

Collaboration and transparency are our preeminent guideposts. Please communicate your thoughts personally, either by phone or email, to one of the team members.

We are:
Julia P, representing the church Council
Cinda S, representing Personnel committee
Vicky S, representing the Search committee
Julia C, representing the church Council
Chad K, representing the congregation

Note: Phone calls also welcome! Contact the church office if you need a number.

Take the Earth Month Quiz:
"Plastic Fact Check"
As we continue to reduce plastic usage the Social Justice/Outreach Team will continue to share helpful information to remind us of the consumer habits we are working to change ... like buying those little plastic purchases that are so habitual you don’t realize that they're plastic until you unpack your bag at home!

With reminders and practice we will think about plastic and create new purchase patterns.

With that in mind please click on the image below for a reminder of how each of us make a difference for our planet. It's a fun and informative quiz — enjoy!
In Our Circle of Prayer
We thank you, O God, for the beauty of this life.
We give you gratitude for the relationships in our lives and this community of faith.

We pray for all those who grieve.
In particular, we pray for Joe M and family at the loss of his brother, Charlie.

We pray for all those who are ill, hurting or have a concern on their hearts.
We pray especially for Rev. Joan Carter, Cinda's mother Jackie S, Alki UCC's Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum, Julia C's friend Jessie T and family, Amy Y's mother Corlene, Davney and Bob S, Sue's B's friends Mary and Louise, and Nick L.

We pray for our wider world.
Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer
and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.
Phil. 4:6-7

Wars and conflicts continue to escalate around the world, and our hearts especially go out to the people of Palestine.

Injustices and inequalities manifest as racism, discrimination, gender-based violence, economic disparities, and other issues. As a communal response to uplift these sorrows and support our neighbors near and far, General Minister and President, the Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson calls the church to a season of prayer. Prayer undergirds our witness, ministry, and advocacy as we work for peace and a just world for all.

This is an open invitation to anyone who feels called to offer a prayer to end violence in any manifestation, and to bring about peace. Share your prayers using the People’s Prayers for Peace form on this page. New prayers are published on this page daily.

Publishing is at the discretion of the National Ministries of the United Church of Christ and prayers may be edited for content and length.
