Jontavious Willis Interview on Basic Folk
Originally from Greenville, Georgia, Jontavious Willis is a blues music phenom. When we talk about the blues, the phrase “torchbearer” comes up a lot when it comes to young, new blues artists. I think of that word as a double-edged sword. When you think of a torchbearer, you think about someone who’s carrying on a flame that was lit long ago. It’s somebody who’s carrying on a tradition, but it also can come with restrictions. Such as oldheads telling you that you’re not doing it right or asking you, “Have you really paid your dues? Are you really faithful to the tradition?” And asking you questions about whether or not you belong.

Jontavious handles that double-edged sword with such alacrity. His writing is firmly contemporary at the same time that his playing is rooted in the tradition of country blues. He knows so much about the genre that he’s basically a walking encyclopedia of the blues.

Jontavious is a great example of a new spin on a genre that a lot of people think they know already. He is so adamant that the blues is a contemporary genre and always has been. He made the point during our interview that a lot of the blues legends we’ve encased in the amber of memory were young teens or 20-somethings when they wrote their iconic songs. It’s really a genre for free people, for young people, for people looking ahead. It’s not about the past.

This interview and live performance was recorded for the podcast live at the Fort Worth African American Roots Music Festival (FWAAMFest).

Find the interview by Lizzie No on The Bluegrass Situation mid-page, The interview begins approx. at the 10:15 minute mark on the recording.

Seth James :: LESSONS
In the age of Spotify, making a playlist of songs from your favorite artist has become as easy as the click of a button. Texas troubadour Seth James has taken that obsession one step further and made a deep dive into the catalog of one of his all-time heroes, Delbert McClinton, and recorded an album of his songs as a loving tribute. The eleven-song collection, Lessons, includes well known hits from the four-time Grammy winner and some lesser known “deep cuts,” from a member of the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame.

For James, the natural choice for this endeavor was to partner with Grammy-winning keyboardist, guitarist, producer, songwriter and engineer, Kevin McKendree, who worked with Delbert for over 25 years. James and McKendree built an All-Star band for the sessions at The Rock House including the rhythm section of Delbert’s band, drummer Lynn Williams, and bass player Steve Mackey along with studio ace Rob McNelley on guitar, the horn section of Vinnie Ciesielski, John Hinchey and Jim Hoke and backing vocalists Nick Jay and Alice Spencer to give each track depth and authenticity.

James has the uncanny ability to match the vocal style of McClinton, who created a signature blend of blues, R&B, rock, country, soul and rootsy funk that earned him the moniker “The Founding Father of Americana” by Rolling Stone.
