Alki UCC Weekly Messenger April 18, 2024
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

April is National Poetry Month, and this week at Alki UCC is Poetry Sunday.

In recognition of Earth Day, and our workshop about plastics following the service, you are invited to choose (or write!) a poem about the earth to share.

Whether magnificent tree or humble potato bug, lighthearted or lament, poets through the ages have written vastly about our fragile, wondrous planet. Some write about our place on it and our responsibility to it, others simply marvel.

We will read the poems during the usual sermon time. Feel free to email your selection to me if you would like it shared on your behalf.

Enjoy your poetry reading!

i thank You God for most this amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
— ee cummings
In hope,
Pastor Emily

Plastics: What are They? Why Should We be Concerned?
Special Presentation after Worship this Sunday, April 21
As a follow-up to Alki UCC's "Giving Up Plastics for Lent" congregational challenge, Joe A presents a timely presentation on the nature and description of plastics, and their consequential impact on the environment, ecological balance and human health.

You can access the class handout, titled “Plastics: What are They? Why Should We Be Concerned” and an additional sheet on "The Recycle Symbol Identifications for Recyclable Plastic Products" here. Printed copies will also be available during the workshop this Sunday, April 21 after worship.

We'll be serving hearty snacks for coffee hour and
giving special thank you prizes for workshop attendees!
Please Watch: YouTube Video on
"The Fraud of Plastic Recycling"
Outreach/Social Justice requests that you please watch this brief YouTube video about the public relations fraud being committed by the plastics/fossil fuel industries.

A new report from the Center for Climate Integrity documents the plastics industry's decades-long campaign to "mislead" the public about the viability of recycling. About 48 million tons of plastic waste is generated in the United States each year, but only 5 to 6 percent of it is actually recycled.

We hope and pray that Seattle is doing better than this, but know that this is worldwide and we are all being duped.

Another reason to commit to lowering our personal consumption of plastic from the start (don't buy it, find other products that don't use plastics), thus lowering its demand that will then reduce its production.

Be mindful! Let us all be in right relationship with God's good Creation.  — Cinda S

From Creation Justice:
Creation is not only waiting for us.
Creation believes in us and knows that we are capable
of doing what it will take to mend, heal, and repair
this abundant and beautiful farm called Earth.

Take the Earth Month Quiz:
"Plastic Fact Check"
As we continue to reduce plastic usage the Social Justice/Outreach Team will continue to share helpful information to remind us of the consumer habits we are working to change ... like buying those little plastic purchases that are so habitual you don’t realize that they're plastic until you unpack your bag at home!

With reminders and practice we will think about plastic and create new purchase patterns.

With that in mind please click on the image below for a reminder of how each of us make a difference for our planet. It's a fun and informative quiz — enjoy!
In Our Circle of Prayer
We thank you, O God, for the beauty of this life.
We give you gratitude for the relationships in our lives and this community of faith.

We pray for all those who grieve. .

We pray for all those who are ill, hurting or have a concern on their hearts.
We pray especially for Rev. Joan Carter, Cinda's mother Jackie S, Alki UCC's Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum, Julia C's friend Jessie T and family, Amy Y's mother Corlene, Davney and Bob S, Sue's B's friends Mary and Louise, and Nick L.

We pray for our wider world.
Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer
and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.
Phil. 4:6-7

Wars and conflicts continue to escalate around the world, and our hearts especially go out to the people of Palestine.

UCC Action Alert:
by rejecting further military aid and assistance to Israel
and by supporting
continued financial contributions to UNRWA.

Injustices and inequalities manifest as racism, discrimination, gender-based violence, economic disparities, and other issues. As a communal response to uplift these sorrows and support our neighbors near and far, General Minister and President, the Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson calls the church to a season of prayer. Prayer undergirds our witness, ministry, and advocacy as we work for peace and a just world for all.

This is an open invitation to anyone who feels called to offer a prayer to end violence in any manifestation, and to bring about peace. Share your prayers using the People’s Prayers for Peace form on this page. New prayers are published on this page daily.

Publishing is at the discretion of the National Ministries of the United Church of Christ and prayers may be edited for content and length.
