Alki UCC Weekly Messenger April 25, 2024
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

Have you noticed that we haven’t yet replaced the Black Lives Matter flag on the front of our building?

After this fifth recent occurrence of flag vandalism at Alki UCC, we began to imagine together the possibility of a different response than immediately replacing the Black Lives Matter banner.

We consulted with a local artist and collaborated on how to best transform the sign into a statement of love and justice. The words of Amos 5:24, quoted by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., called to us: “Let justice roll down like water.” The scripture text will be highlighted with a river of grace flowing from the torn edge.

After worship on Pentecost, 50 days after the tearing of the flag, we will gather together to paint the prophetic words and evocative image on the sign.

With God’s love at our core, we strive to partner with our community to actively create paths of peace, justice, compassion, fellowship and inclusion. May it be so.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

An Invitation to Help Create the "Fiery Spirit" of Pentecost

From Outreach/Social Justice Team:
It seems every organization has plastics as their theme for Earth Day, and no wonder in light of how insidious plastics are in poisoning this precious place called Earth!

We learned so much about plastics' inescapable presence in our lives during our Fasting From Plastics Lenten Series, but we also learned how to challenge their ease of use by being mindful in changing our consumer habits.

In Joe A's great seminar (thank you Joe!) we talked at length about microplastics. Earth Ministry provides a slew of resources to educate ourselves, from our beloved polar fleece to microplastic pollution as a racial justice issue.

In Our Circle of Prayer
We thank you, O God, for the beauty of this life.
We give you gratitude for the relationships in our lives and this community of faith.

We pray for all those who grieve.
Comfort their hearts and hold them close.

We pray for all those who are ill, hurting or have a concern on their hearts.
We pray especially for Jim J's 93-yer-old Uncle Don, Rev. Joan Carter, Cinda's mother Jackie S, Alki UCC's Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum, Dan’s friend, Mary, as she deals with dementia and a new place to live, Julia C's friend Jessie T and family, Amy Y's mother Corlene, Davney and Bob S, Sue's B's friends Mary and Louise, and Nick L.

We pray for our wider world.
Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer
and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.
Phil. 4:6-7

Wars and conflicts continue to escalate around the world, and our hearts especially go out to the people of Palestine.

UCC Action Alert:
by rejecting further military aid and assistance to Israel
and by supporting
continued financial contributions to UNRWA.

Injustices and inequalities manifest as racism, discrimination, gender-based violence, economic disparities, and other issues. As a communal response to uplift these sorrows and support our neighbors near and far, General Minister and President, the Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson calls the church to a season of prayer. Prayer undergirds our witness, ministry, and advocacy as we work for peace and a just world for all.

This is an open invitation to anyone who feels called to offer a prayer to end violence in any manifestation, and to bring about peace. Share your prayers using the People’s Prayers for Peace form on this page. New prayers are published on this page daily.

Publishing is at the discretion of the National Ministries of the United Church of Christ and prayers may be edited for content and length.

Happy Passover!
Alki UCC wishes our friends from Kol HaNeshamah (KHN) and Jews around the world “Chag Pesach sameach!” or Happy Passover!

Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is one of the most beloved of all Jewish holidays. The festival commemorates the Exodus from Egypt and is centered on the family or communal celebration of the seder (ritual meal),
Its name comes from the miracle in which God “passed over” the houses of the Israelites during the tenth plague.

Passover 2024 began Monday at sundown and continues through Tuesday, April 30.
