Berkeley, CA ~ Peter Tosh’s Birthday Celebration Saturday, October 19
|
Annual Rastafarian Celebration of Peter Tosh’s Birthday at The Ashkenaz in Berkeley on Saturday, October 19 Featuring Rare Films, Nyabinghi Drumming, DJ, Special Guests, and more.
Out Of Many One Productions presents the Peter Tosh Birthday Celebration on Saturday, October 19 on what would have been Peter Tosh’s 80th birthday. This is the 37th installment of this Bay Area tradition. Doors are at 7:30pm and activities will start at 8pm.
Attendees will enjoy rare footage of Peter Tosh’s early life. Music will be provided by a local DJ, plus a special guest. The host is local celebrity radio DJ Spliff Skankin.
The Out Of Many One Nyabinghi Drummers will also be performing ceremonial Rastafarian drumming and chanting.
Peter Tosh, the “Stepping Razor”, was a Rastafarian, and in keeping with his beliefs, the entire event will be performed by Rastafarian practitioners. The public is welcome to come and enjoy this pure “Rasta” ceremony.
Event producer, Carlton Campbell, who is also Peter Tosh’s cousin and toured with him extensively in the 80’s, keeps the fire burning for Tosh’s music and message by producing this annual event. Campbell says, “We have celebrated Peter Tosh’s birthday one way or the other since his passing in 1987. Some of the celebrations have been huge concerts and others were more intimate. This year, we are excited to be able to share rare film footage of Peter Tosh.”
The Peter Tosh Foundation in Jamaica is also holding Tosh Fest on the same day, as the Berkeley, CA event, as part of a new initiative aimed at addressing disparities in the reggae legend’s hometown of Belmont, Bluefields- Westmoreland.
The Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center is located at 1317 San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, CA. This is all- ages event. $20 tickets are available in advance online or at the door. GET TIX HERE

‘A PR nightmare of epic proportions’: Juno Awards reverse controversial decision to pull 2025 categories, including reggae and gospel
|
The organization’s previous decision to put four categories on “hiatus” sparked outrage from musicians and elected officials.
Earlier this month, it was reported that organizers of the JUNO Awards were putting the Reggae Recording, Children's Album, Christian/Gospel Album and International Album of the Year categories of its annual honours "on hiatus" for 2025. Following backlash from Canadian artists, fans and community leaders alike, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced yesterday (September 17) that three of those four categories — Reggae Recording, Children's Album and Christian/Gospel Album of the Year — would be reinstated.
President and CEO of the Juno Awards and CARAS, Allen Reid, shared the news on social media, writing, "Over the course of last year, CARAS underwent an extensive process reviewing all award categories, taking into consideration data such as consumption, number of submissions, and other metrics. Given the feedback from the community, CARAS will not put these three categories on hiatus this year."
Reid added that an official notice outlining categorical changes for the 2025 JUNO Awards will be issued on Monday (September 23) to provide further clarity on the organization's direction and vision for the accolades. "We are excited about these changes, including bringing in new categories to reflect the evolution of the Canadian music scene," he wrote.

Vaughn Benjamin, the voice of Midnite and Akae Beka, is one of the most prolific reggae lyricists of the modern era. He was a scholar, poet and teacher. He released over 80 albums in a 25-year period. In late October of 2019, Vaughn travelled to Grass Valley, CA to record at Ras Biblical’s studio, Trinity Farm Music. Earlier this year, the album “Living Testament” album was released from those sessions. Yet, there’s more to this story!
In Biblical’s words: “THE AKAE BEKA SCROLLS manifested through the creative brilliance of Vaughn Benjamin as super-producer magnetizing the musicians to this inity of spirit and mind, calling on all skillfulness. These 12 dubs are a sound of veteran players of instruments inna oneness and brothers inna oneness across the whole earth! Coming together for a reason, each dub precisely directed by Vaughn. With humbleness each musician brought to life in real time such harmony and powers, this music is the reason, the cream of the crop.”
An all-star team gathered, including: Ras Pulse - drums & percussions; Scott Davis - drums; Kenyatta Itola - bass; Ryan ‘Ishence’ Willard – guitars; Manuel ‘Go A Chant’ Guerra - keys, bass & percussion; Ras Kemo - percussion. He laid out his creative vision by humming what he wanted each musician to play. Each dub was composed and directed by Vaughn. THE AKAE BEKA SCROLLS is a unique album in the discography of Akae Beka. It’s an instrumental album with several interludes of Vaughn singing and playing acoustic guitar. It is available on CD and high-quality download on September 6th courtesy of Go A Chant, Trinity Farm Music, and I-Roots Records.
The beautiful cover artwork was created by Marcus Wilson.

In Jah´s Name We Pray
Is it good to meditate every day?
There's no way around it: creating a regular habit can help unlock even more benefits of meditation. In fact, research shows that frequency is even more important than duration — meaning, that meditating for 10 minutes a day, seven days a week is more beneficial than 70 minutes one day a week.
