Rev. Tiare L. Mathison Presbyterian Pastor, Retired
Hello everyone!
Let me introduce myself beyond my title.
I retired from full-time ministry, after 35 years, in August, 2023. At the time, I was the pastor of Wallingford Presbyterian Church, a delightful neighborhood centered place of community and mission.
In our system, when a pastor leaves, they have to stay away for a year at least. As we lived right in the middle of the neighborhood, we had to go somewhere.
My husband Jeff and I moved to the Lighthouse Apartments, right next door to the Coast Guard Station on the point. One day, on a long walk, I stumbled onto Alki UCC. I loved the building and that you share your space with a Jewish congregation and a Meditation Group. I was happy to see a woman’s name as the pastor, too :)
I came to worship in early June and had a deep sense of recognition — ah, yes, these are my peeps. Your welcome, your mission, your music and your pastor’s preaching invited me in. Yet I kept my ‘title’ quiet for the first weeks, as the word ‘pastor’ can get loaded with all sorts of stuff. About a month or six weeks later, Pastor Emily and I had coffee and a long talk. We have many connections via Fuller Seminary and I know some of the folk and background of the Christian Reformed Church, too.
We spoke about how best I could support her ministry and the mission at Alki. Pastor Emily is supposed to take one Sunday off a month. I felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit to offer, "I could fill in. I love to preach!" She talked it over with the Worship Committee and asked me to come and lead worship on October 27.
As to theology, I am a Jesus Lover, Feminist and Christian. Progressive and yet empathetic to more conservative views as I pastored a church in Iowa for 10 years and learned a lot from those folks. In this season of our nation’s life, we need to be especially sensitive to the Holy Spirit speaking truth to power, voicing and voting our support of LGBTQ+ folk, immigrants, and the poor, people of color. We who have privilege must sacrifice to lift up all.
Thank you for your welcome. I look forward to getting to know you all more deeply.

Special Presentation on Critical WA State Ballot Initiatives after Worship this Sunday
|
Science Educator/Teacher Joe A and Nurse Educator/AAUW-WA Emily H team up to present clear, concise information on the four ballot Initiatives and the real-life impact of their potential passage. Joe's presentation, titled "Washington Ballot Initiatives that Could Impact Climate Change Policy," is on ballot Initiatives 2066 and 2117:
• Initiative 2066 "would repeal or prohibit certain laws and regulations that discourage natural gas use, and/or promote electrification, and require certain utilities and local governments to provide natural gas to eligible customers. Should this measure be enacted into law?"
• If approved, Initiative 2117 would prohibit state agencies from implementing cap-and-invest carbon emissions programs. Joe notes: "The question of whether these initiatives should be approved or disapproved by the voter cannot be answered without an assessment of the real consequences of a Yes vote. The purpose of my presentation will be to discuss the ramifications of the approval of such measures." Emily H is presenting information on:
• Initiative 2124, which would introduce an Opt-Out option to The WA Cares Fund, a first-in-the-nation program created by the state legislature in 2019.
Emily will cover the gender equity issue, why Opt-In won't work and how The Fund fills a critical gap in home care.
• Initiative 2109 would repeal Washington's Capital Gains Excise Tax, a key facet of the state's equitable tax code structure. Repealing the tax, which funds the state's Education Legacy Trust Account, would have significant economic impact and exacerbate the gender wealth gap.
Joe and Emily will make their presentations in the parlor after Hospitality Hour.

• Washington State Initiatives:
Washington State Initiatives: We have four critical ballot initiatives in WA that aim to strip away progress we have made as a state to fight climate change, build affordable housing, support schools and create long-term care for people.
Come learn more about these initiatives at a special information session presented by Emily Hitchens and Joe Aprile this Sunday, October 27 after worship (see story above).
Let's be a 100% Voting Congregation and encourage others to participate in this precious right to vote for ALL citizens.

Out of State ... Still in Our Hearts
|
From Ruth B, who moved to beautiful Maine:
IT'S HERE! My new directory arrived and my picture is in it! Thank you for caring.
I have just had a visitor, my former neighbor Margaret, who flew out to visit me and my daughter. We gave her the brief tour of the area's scenic highlights, noting some color in the maple trees. She is satisfied that I made the right move in coming to Maine.
I hope all is well at church, and send my greetings,
Love, Ruth
