Dear Alki UCC,
It’s an odd thing that we do in the church each year. A mourning ritual, ashes on the head. A reminder of mortality. A grieving. A hope of new life on the other side of death. A beginning at every ending.
“You are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
In the book of Genesis, these words were uttered by God to the first human. We repeat them on Ash Wednesday. We remember who we are. We are human. We are flesh and someday we will all return to dust. We are part of the cycle of God’s creation.
Since the beginning of time, we humans mark things. We say, I was here. This happened. We stack stones or light a candle. We offer a toast or share a meal.
We say something true and then do something with an ordinary thing made holy. The more ordinary the better.
You can’t get much more ordinary than ash. The dust of what once was.
This is where the journey of Lent begins. This time we set apart in the church to get ready for the mystery of resurrection.
From the ash, out of the dust, we rise.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

Alki UCC Lenten Worship and Study
|
"everything [in] between" Meeting God in the Midst of Extremes
Over the next 15 chapters and 7 weeks, guided by the Gospel of Luke, we will study the stories and parables that defined Jesus’ final chapter in ministry.
Our Lenten series is an invitation to navigate the polarities in our lives with more faith, intention and openness to be transformed. Each weekly sub-theme explores two supposed binaries, like “faith and works” or “rest and growth” or “grief and hope.” We often consider these ideas to be opposing. However, as we explore these concepts within the scriptures, we find nuance and complexity.
This theme is for anyone who is in discernment or trying to find their way through an undefined space. It will speak to anyone who feels as if they are living in a divided world. It is for those who seek a spiritual life that engages with complexity instead of avoiding it.
This Lent, we're trusting that God shows up in shades of gray, rainbow hues and everywhere in between.
Devotionals will be available beginning Ash Wednesday.

Lent Bible Study, on Tuesdays and Sundays via Zoom, begins Tuesday, March 4 at noon. See story at right for registration and other details.

Thanks to all who used our narthex Sustainable Cubbies
Sustainable Stewards Cubbie Corner (SSCC)
|
What can I save and where do I put it?
Your usage of our Sustainable Steward Cubbie Corner has grown steadily since our cautious slow start last year. Our drop-off and disperse system is structured to accommodate the steady incline for the year ahead.
Most materials are recycled or repurposed as we continue to find various avenues to help manage materials that were previously laying in a landfill or turning into microplastics throughout our community. We continue to move ahead as stewards of our earth, caring not only for our planet but each other. Thank you.
The following categories are accepted in the cubbies weekly: • Batteries, household size batteries • Light bulbs, household socket bulbs • Plastic Film, grab a cheat sheet in the Parlor after church • Multi Layer Plastic Film, grab a cheat sheet in the Parlor after church • Loose plastic caps (the small caps on soups, milk, beverages) • Metal Bottle Caps • Rubber Bands • Twist Ties • Bread Tags • Electronic cords, chargers, adapters • Wine corks • Prescription Pill Bottles and caps • Portable devices, cell phones, tablets.
• Laptops • Reusable egg cartons-dozen eggs only, plastic or cardboard • Contact lens packaging
Please drop your wiped down clean, (nothing that can mold, crumb free, totally dry), items in the Cubbies at the northwest corner of the Narthex.
If you can’t find a container in the drawer for your item just go ahead and put it in the drawer, we will find it and give it a home. We clear them out every week so it should be all right.
