Dear Alki UCC,
I had a wonderful experience learning the art of labyrinth facilitation from Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress, the founder of the modern labyrinth movement. She has trained over 6,000 labyrinth facilitators all over the world!
You may wonder: "Why is there a need for labyrinth facilitators? Don’t we simply put one foot in front of the other and walk them?"
Yes. That is true. It is very simple.
And. It is also incredibly complex.
Labyrinths are an ancient archetype dating back nearly 5,000 years. They have a rich, varied and mysterious history.
There is no right way to walk a labyrinth. There are as many ways to engage with labyrinths as there are humans.
Labyrinth facilitators are trained in how to present the labyrinth in a concise way, how to hold space, how to respond to unusual happenings in a labyrinth walk, and how to create and lead labyrinth events. We also learn about many types of labyrinths, reasons one might walk a labyrinth, the history of labyrinths and how to help people process their labyrinth experience.
The labyrinth is a liminal space. Liminal means “in between.” As we have been exploring in our Lent series, Everything in Between: Meeting God in the Midst of Extremes, a lot can happen in between, in a space of ambiguity. It is the space of mystery, a sacred meeting place.
We’ll have an opportunity to walk our canvas labyrinth at our Good Friday service at noon on April 18. In this time of uncertainty and anxiety, labyrinth walking can be an especially powerful spiritual practice for grounding, clarity and renewal. May God meet us on the labyrinth.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

This Sunday, April 6: A Time of Sharing What We Learned ... Giving Up Plastics for Lent
|
As we near the end of Lent the Alki UCC Outreach & Social Justice Team is hosting coffee hour after church this Sunday, April 6. An informal sharing follows.
Please bring the list of plastic items you found at home, and join us to share what you discovered about plastics.
We'll share our new discoveries of plastic-free alternatives, and discuss solutions for the items you found. If you have an unusual or difficult item to find a swap for bring it along. We plan to learn about items others found that you may have but didn’t even notice. Let’s discuss and celebrate us being aware and working to change during this time of sharing and celebration as we reflect on the highs and lows of our Lenten plastic swap.

Take the Alki UCC Challenge!! We're hoping this year's Plastic Lenten Fast sparks increased awareness of the plastic you use daily and a renewed motivation to find simple alternatives to reduce waste and be better stewards of this amazing gift from God, our Earth.

Transgender Day of Visibility
|

We hold them in our hearts every day. Each year on March 31, the world observes Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) to raise awareness about transgender people. It is a day to celebrate the lives and contributions of trans people, while also drawing attention to the disproportionate levels of poverty, discrimination, and violence the community faces compared to cisgender (non-transgender) people.
